sparrow dance

back in september, i released a lovely neck warmer pattern named sparrow song, which was one of the designs featured in the september 2012 installment of our fall in full color club. i may have mentioned at the time that we also featured a sock design knit in the same yarn and promised that the pattern would be released very soon.

sigh—the best laid plans and so forth . . . one thing led to another—i was traveling, playing catchup when i got home, unable to manage a backlog of new shop offerings all at once—in other words, things got away from me a bit so the sock never had its general release.

and i still DO have a long backlog of new designs to release, as well as the october 2012 patterns now; i guess we are all set for the upcoming holiday pattern parade, eh?

anyway, today it’s chilly, windy, and damp in my neck of the woods. i’m in a cozy, hand knit socks kind of mood as i gaze out on the first of november in all its gray glory. so i’m letting these sparrow dance socks fly free from the nest and picturing you making a nice weekend knitting project out of them, curled in a warm easy chair.

they are knit in a deliciously textured motif that has a little openwork and a few cables to give it depth. worked in yarn that’s a bit fuzzy, like the original hazel knits entice or our own breakfast blend fingering yarn (now in eight luscious shades).

here—i even knit swatch for you in our deep, rich espresso shade; it’s a perfect fit for this design!

yummy, don’t you think, in a pattern with such wonderful depth? the perfect vehicle for showing off a yarn with a little halo.

i’ll always think of this project fondly as the one where i finally got comfortable about cabling without a needle; if you haven’t attempted this technique before, any of these sparrow song projects are a great way to try it. and our ravelry group is always there to hold your hand all the way through.

shown here, size small sock in hazel knits entice MCN, a luscious merino/cashmere/nylon blend with wonderful body, softness, and sheen. the color was our club exclusinve, a gray-brown with plummy tones named song sparrow (not currently available in the hazel knits shop but there are many wonderful substitutes). and of course they’d be gorgeous also in our breakfast blend fingering, ghillie sock, or stone soup fingering yarns.
