okay, i’m gonna talk about it

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

i could say i skipped a couple of days here at the blog, because i just didn’t have anything to say.
(stop that laughing)
but the truth is FAR more unpleasant.

however, debbie has talked me into telling what i’ve been up to, because SHE thinks half the world reads my blog, and that this is an opportunity for me to spread awareness. (that debbie, she always knows how to tug at my socially responsible heartstrings . . .) i apologize in advance to everyone who will find this . . . well disconcerting. but i promise—there IS knitting content later on! so stick with me or skip down—you’re choice.

the reason i have been absent for a few days is that i was preparing for, and then having, a colonoscopy. and i gotta say, for those of you who might be avoiding it for some reason or other—as unpleasant things go, really truly, this one does not rate that badly (i find the dentist far worse, and i don’t even get cavities). i had a scope years and years ago that was awful because they did not put me to sleep. it took me, seriously, about 13 years to get over it—as in, i would not even GO to a doctor. i’ve had a nervous digestion most of my life, but other than that i am the picture of physical health. this was confirmed by my recent physical, the first i had in many years.

but the doctor insisted on making an appointment for this colonoscopy, in order to give me a completely clean bill of health. so i did it. and it was ok (i’ll get the formal results monday). just so you know—don’t be afraid, it’s two days out of your life, a little forced time-out, AND, you can do some knitting while you wait.

here’s how much of a mermaid sock i had when i got to the office at 8:30 am

(it might have been a few rows longer, since i worked on it a bit wednesday) i didn’t get inside right away—get this—they tell you to come an hour early, but they don’t tell you THAT until you have been there over an hour. anyway, here’s how much i got done while i waited

through the heel and onto the foot even! i had marked the first sock on the row of the pattern where i started the heel. that way i could make the sox match exactly (something i never do for myself, but seems essential that i do when knitting for a stranger). anyway, i thought i was bringing the sock knitting mostly for comfort and that maybe i’d get a few rows done—y’know? so i left the first sock home, and after all my planning i had to completely guess at where to start the heel.

and truly, i did not have a clue. i mean, i do my sock knitting practically in a trance-state. i talk, teach, watch TV, walk around, upload files, talk on the phone—almost everything while i knit socks. it’s one thing i do NOT have to pay attention to, which is why i revel in making them. so i looked at this thing, incredulous at my lack of foresight (again with the laughing? fie on you!), wondering what i should do (“stop knitting” was NOT even considered a choice). so i winged it and forged ahead. i guessed. matching sox be damned.

i knit through the heel and beyond—thank god i had my knitting with me, can you imagine how many walls i would have climbed in all that time?
fast-forward to afterwards, back at home (you didn’t really think i was going to give you a minute-by-minute report, did you?). this is what awaited me:

  1. there was a package from fearless fibers sitting on the doorstep. i was way too groggy and disoriented to open it then, but when i did later, it was like a volcano of gorgeousness exploded all over my feet. (more on that tomorrow; i couldn’t get good pictures this evening)
  2. i slept the best sleep i’ve had in months for five whole hours and woke up feeling fabulous
  3. i took out my mermaid sock to take a picture of the tremendous amount of knitting that was accomplished, and found out that i had started the heel on EXACTLY the right row

all i can say is PAYBACK! the universe loves those who get their house in order.

one last quick note: the brownTreXX sock was completely jealous that the mermaid sox are getting all the spotlight today, especially since they have had an inch or more added since their last photo. what could i say—i took a picture of them too, i’m feeling benevolent this evening.

  1. I am very happy you went to have a colonoscopy – I have lost many loved ones to colon cancer – I love even more that you knit so productively! Quite lovely – and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers until Monday. Katie Couric and I toast you! Cheers!!

  2. Hi Anne

Thanks for your note regarding my website and the heads up regarding the photos. I have gone over the site many times, but the photos appear fine. WHat is firefox or safari by the way? I only recently transpoted everything over to wordpress. I have also tried viewing them on another computer and the photos seem fine. If you know of any debugging that I should know, I’ll gladly look them over. Thanks for the compliments and please keep in touch!

  3. Hi Anne

I just checked with the wordpress people that if you’re on a mac using safari or firefox and you’re having trouble with viewing the photos that they say you should install the latest version of firefox or safari to do so.

    I hope this helps.

  4. Hi Anne

Just to make sure everything went right with the blog pixs, I did reload the photos on my new blog. Since there are so many photos I only manage to reload the 2 most recent posts. This should solve all problems. So that everyone can see them. Again thanks for the headsup.

    Spin and Blog on!

  5. I’m glad to hear from someone besided Katie Couric that it’s not that bad. I mean, how much can you trust someone who’s always perky no matter what? 😉

    The socks are beautiful!

  6. I’ve been putting off my colonscopy for almost a year. I’m only 40 but my mom died of colon cancer in her 60s so I need to start checking on this now. It’s not the procedure I’m afraid of, or even the prep stuff, it’s the damned IV. I hate IVs. Good for you for going and getting it over with and I’m so glad you got a good report.

  7. Amen to the colonoscopy. I had one a year and a half ago. One of the church ladies drove me, and I warned her that I’ve been known to curse like a sailor while anesthetized (my youngest *will not* tell me what I said when I was coming out of the fog after my gall bladder surgery five years ago, LOL, but she says I know words she didn’t think I knew). Said church lady is still speaking to me and doesn’t collapse in a fit of helpless giggles when she sees me in the hall between meetings.

I don’t have to go back for another year and a half, and when I do, I’ll have knitting to take with me. Last year, I was in a cross-stitch phase.

For me the worst part was that gallon of stuff you have to drink. Worth it, however, for a clean bill of health.

    Giving you a 21-DPN salute!

  8. LOL!! just yesterday I had my annual GYN checkup and 2 hours later I was way ahead on my scarf, AND I was cool, calm and collected…
its good of you to share!

  9. My husband had the colonoscopy done about two years back (that 50 year milestone). He says the preparation was the hard part as he was out for the surgery as well. His surgeon was hysterical, had a small, “statue” if you will, of the Perfect Poop! In two years when I hit the 50 mark I’ll have to go back to that town for it as well, excellent surgeon. Good for you and that you had it done and sending good thoughts for good results. Oh knitting? Beautiful as always.

  10. As a three year survivor of colon cancer, I say thank you for informing people about having a colonoscopy. Trust me, having a colonoscopy is a breeze compared with treating colon cancer. Everyone should have a colonoscopy, no excuses.

  11. As an RN, good for you! If there has been one thing that I have figured out my years in the profession is that you have got to have a sense of humor and a willingness to share your stories. Hope all is well!

  12. Keep up on the scopes. I had my first one Feb 15th this year and on March 28th I had a bowel resection. Precancerous polyps. I will make sure I go for a yearly one from now on.

  13. See Anne, I told you letting people know how important it is to have this done IS a good idea..and for the faint at heart, well, they learned what a good idea it is too!! Way to go Anne!~…so to speak heehee.

  14. I simply do not think I could get through mammograms, smears, and all those other damn checkups without a pair of socks to work on. Mind you, I have been known to forget the pattern at times, just when I’m congratulating myself on being so cool…
