monkey bread hat and scarf

Posted on Posted in patterns

i will be the first to admit that “monkey bread” may not be the most elegant name for luxurious knit accessories such as these, but have a look . . .

they look very similar the shape and texture of that delicious treat. not to mention how cozy-warm and yummy all those winding cables are, just like the bread itself. mmmmm.

the pattern includes both versions of the scarf—straight and infinity style plus the hat, with everything in two sizes.

shown above: size small hat with size large infinity scarf, in great northern yarns mink/cashmere DK, in colorway deep forest green.

shown below: size large hat with size large straight scarf, in great northern yarns mink/cashmere DK, colorway green apple, which will be back in stock in early april.

mmmm, SO soft—it’s really beyond description, but hopefully david’s photos do it justice . . .

this particular set has traveled thousands of miles with me since i finished it in january and has been worn nearly every day, save for the day i washed it—and many of those in the rain. just look at how beautifully it weathers such constant wear . . .

if anything the surface of the fabric is even more beautiful than when it was new—the yarn takes a little time to come to its full bloom—about a week of every-day wear will bring out a lush nap with a silky-soft touch. it’s like nothing you’ve ever felt.

and it doesn’t pill or shed. i’m incredibly impressed—can you tell?

craig from great northern yarns is one of the most enthusiastic fiber producers i’ve met—he can talk microns with the best of them.
but he doesn’t knit . . . what’s up with that??
haha, even david was urging him to take up the needles in a recent email.
actually, craig has a good reason—he’s busy spreading the word about his incredible mink yarns and the animal-friendly farm where the fiber is produced. and working hard to get that yarn into our hot little knitting hands.
you can see all of craig’s yarns in the great northern yarns online store—be sure to get on the mailing list while you’re there to receive a note when his colors are restocked.

thank you very, very much to helen and jocelyn for test knitting this scarf and hat—i really appreciate people who jump up with hands waving to help out in this way; it takes a special knitter to spend the time and attention required for testing and i am very lucky to be surrounded by many.

and thank you david for another beautiful photo shoot—i understand he also has one of his little films to upload as soon as it’s ready—check in at the knitspot youTube channel sometime in the next few hours to view.

ok, few more photos and then i’m going to go relax; it’s 3:30 am and i’ve had enough of this chair!

  5. Another gorgeous shoot, David!

The yarn for the hats and scarves just exudes such luxurious softness, even through a computer screen. And combined with those fat cables — *swoon*! It’s a perfect combo of pattern and yarn, Anne!

  6. i love green. they are both such beautiful colors ( i think i like green apple the best, though) and you really can see how soft they are! and i think the name is cute, too. great job!

  7. ooooh anne you look absolutely gorgeous. this goes into the queue for next fall/winter!

  8. Just saw you – its not over yet post – we just got 18″ of new snow last night! Everything is closed, even the roads!

  9. Anne – you look beautiful in these pictures!!! Yet another gorgeous pattern set too :D:D

  10. I love both of these sets and they look great on you. Beautiful patterns once again.

  11. Stunning. Luscious. And that forest green is your color, Anne. 🙂 Just downloaded the pattern–this will be fun to knit up and watch the cables emerge.

    Beautiful photo shoot, David!

  12. They’re so beautiful and you look gorgeous in them! I agree with everyone else and think you look fabulous in that forest green.

  13. I must join my voice in unison with many others – the dark green is gorgeous on you. Although the apple green is beautiful, something about the dark green just does it for you. Great look!

  14. Fabulous patterns!!! I love those soft cables!!

The photoshoot is another stunner!! I would give anything for that window location you have!! And the image that’s 5th from the bottom…priceless, I heart it!! 🙂

  15. I’m off to buy the pattern. I made a pair of long mitts from this dark green and I still have a nother skein ready to go. I think the hat will be perfect. Can I do it with one skein? I guess we’ll see!
I think this pattern is just perfect for this yarn. It looks as soft and cushy as the yarn feels. Think I’ll make it in the sunset red for 2011 Christmas gifts when Craig gets it back in stock.

  16. Beautiful hat, beautiful scarf, beautiful yarn….. beautiful model…. nice job on the video David..

  17. Anne, you are simply stunning. I can’t say it enough. You and David are incredible with these photo shoots! David, I loved the YouTube trailer!! Great job.

I’m off to buy the pattern and visit Craig for some yarn.

Love, love, love pattern release days.

Hope you two get some rest after all of that work.

  18. I am not a hat person (hats and curly hair give new meaning to the words “hat head”)… but I see that this just might change that. I love that pattern. Have to give this some serious thought now to see if I am not just in a weakened state from fantastic photos/color/yarn/videos, or if It’s a new me!!! Lovely and more lovely…..

  19. You had the most perfect weather for the photo shoot! It’s a wonderful pattern, and I feel so, so lucky that I was able to test knit it for you. I might just have to knit an infinity version in another colourway! It’s gorgeous to the power of infinity!!!

  20. I look awful in hats, but I like the infinity cowl. You are such a temptress–I’m going to have to try that mink yarn now!

  21. Simply beautiful – tell me is there any colour you don’t suit??? !!! I have a problem with hats, except for polyester fleece hats, in that they make my scalp itchy and are really uncomfortable. Would this yarn suit my sensitive scalp? Would be grateful to have that information. Gratefully, Joyce.

  22. Thanks for the great yarn review. On appearances, I would not consider this yarn because I would have expected it to shed all over my coat. Now that you have said otherwise I think it is worth a try!

  23. Elegant is exactly the word that came to mind when I saw the first picture. I have been lusting after this yarn since the first purple beret. Gorgeous!

  24. Oh Anne, FINALLY!!!!! I am so excited about this pattern. Can’t WAIT to start it. And it’s even spring time and I still can’t wait to start knitting it! It will be perfect for Rhinebeck. I will go stash diving in my GNY yarns now. . . .

  25. In my dreams I can imagine a wonderful luxurious blanket made with Craig’s yarn, or a really comfy weekend sweater that I could burrow in.

And, I’m so excited to see another fabulous video! I hope to see more (yes I’m greedy and a sucker for short videos) as I think they add another dimension to your writing and the photos…

  26. The perfect Birthday present for myself! Thanks for releasing the pattern-just perfect!!!!

  27. I just downloaded the pattern, Anne, and I predict this will be a highly successful pattern offering for Knitspot. The yarn is great.

I made 5 sets of Leafprints neckwarmer and mitts for 5 staff members. I think I know the pattern and the yarn intimately. Two washings seem to bring out the bloom beautifully.

The hard choice will be the colour. Thank you Anne, for a lovely pattern.

  28. LOVE it! just bought the pattern from ravelry. and yes, you guessed it! i’m going to use Kollage Yarns Scrumptious.

  29. Yeah, this is going to be my hat/scarf for next winter. Love it in the dark green. I am curring making a dark green shawl and only now that I am almost done am I loving the color.

  30. BeeeeuuuutiiiiiFull! That color is gorgeous on you. I am not a hat person.(look awful in them) but I would try this one. It is in the line up of winter knits. Ordered my seeds for garden and in the slew of catalogs I received, one had some recipes. Would you like a recipe for an eggplant cake? It looked interesting and I was thinking of your eggplant pictures. Probably won’t be back on line until later this week. Looking foward to details on your upcoming club. Also am interested to know what you thought of the book The Good Life (?) Do you recommend it? Thanks for sharing our life with us!

  31. Funny, like so many others, I opened the comments to say that the forest green is YOUR color!

  32. What can I say, Anne? Ditto…forest green is your colour; ditto, the pattern is stunning, even to a hat-loather (I do have fabulous daughters and friends who look great in a hat!), and I love scarf. Oh, my project queue…..

  33. Fabulous! I must say, I was hoping for a picture of the delicious Monkey Bread (which we call Monkey Brains). I think I might have to make some… knitting and baking kind. The pictures are great (Yeah David!) and that cashmere looks divine. This is definitely going on my short list. Thanks for another great pattern!
