sticks and stones

well, there we have it—finally something that makes david smile for the camera—a new sweater and an adoring fan; what could be better?

it’s like the clouds broke open to let the sun in, isn’t it?

this is why handknit sweaters are so great—they bring out the unexpected in each of us.

of course lara believes it’s her girlish wiles that produced such a big smile from david and i think we should let her continue to revel in her success, don’t you?

in all seriousness, though, we had a beautiful class day recently at the farm of our shalimar yarn friends, kristi and paul. afterward, they graciously offered their sloping back meadow for our photo shoot.

david and lara donned their sweaters and we got some awesome shots in that pretty light that you get just before sunset.

this is another versatile sport weight sweater pattern with lots of options, including a crew neck or v-neck pullover or cardigan with a vest option thrown in for good measure. oh—and it’s sized for both men and women. that should cover just about all of us, i think.

all versions are knit in a subtle, allover pebble stitch texture (it’s so easy, you could do it in your sleep). cabled detailing at the side seams, armholes, and front closures provides textural interest, as well as depth and definition.

this sweater is easy to adjust if you need to—while lara made no changes to the size small that she knit, debby is petite and reduced the lengths everywhere to fit her frame with lovely results. i made some minor adjustments to david’s sleeve and body length as well.

shown above: size small cardigan and pullover vest (women’s length) in woolen rabbit sporty superwash merino, a deliciously bouncy 3-ply in colorway olive tweed. our friend barb also knit the crew neck vest in woolen rabbit oasis for a softer, more luxurious hand and it’s absolutely lovely—photos coming soon!

the yarn for these beautiful sweaters was generously provided by my good friend kim kaslow, owner and dyer of the woolen rabbit yarns. kim knows just the kind of colors david loves (and apparently, everyone else, too, haha). her venture this past year into sweater weight yarns has brought a whole new dimension to her wide selection of yarn offerings—please visit her online shop to see more of her beauties.

thanks ever so much to my dear friends lara and debby for modeling their test knits for us—i know it isn’t easy to get out in front of the camera but they pull it off effortlessly and with grace.

many thanks also to a host of additional test knitters, including nathalie, barb, anne marie, kari, and karolyn—it really does take a village.

david, of course is a good sport all around and finds a friend in every animal as well—look at him with that dog.

he might just need one of his own . . .

  1. Love all the versions of this sweater! And David actually visibly smiling and laughing 😉

  2. Wow – 3 in 1 ! All 3 versions look great especially the vest but then I am biased as I love vests.

  3. I love the cardigan version. The cable details around the button band are just my style!

  4. How wonderful to see David’s lovely smile! And with that sweater (and adoring fan), no wonder – I am going to have to make the exact same one for my hubby. It’s the perfect “guy sweater”!

  5. I love seeing David smile, its so warm and friendly, you know its heartfelt when he does. I love the new pattern I see another cardi going on my list to make!

  6. I think I might just venture in sweater knitting with this pattern. I love cardigans. I also must add my comment along with others – It is great to see David smile. I find it difficult to be put on the spot to smile just because I am asked to do so. It is so much easier when given a reason to actually smile. You go, David!

  7. Another great pattern with fab photos. Was David sizing up his furry friend for a puppy sized version?!

If only you could create a pattern with a sturdy breast pocket for my darling engineer hubby who can’t be without instant access to his writing implements. (sigh)

  8. Anne! I’ve been a silent lurker for too long again 🙂 – this is lovely – I want a pullover version. I’ll need new yarn.. What fun. 🙂
He does look good with the dog…..do YOU want one?
    very best – Kate.

  9. Another winner Anne! I love all of the options you’ve included. Thank you for the smile, David. It’s gray and dreary here, and seeing you smile made ME smile. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  10. Love the sweater, another great one, Anne!

BUT a dog, huh? I would love to see a knitspot dog, think of the unlimited modeling opportunities!

  11. woooo!
They are all fabulous. Debby looks great (and so does her vest!)
Not to mention David’s happy face…….

  12. I love these pictures! Such a beautiful spring day and such a handsome smile on David’s face!

  13. What a great sweater(s) and vest. Another great production from Anne Hanson. BTW, do you still do commission sock designing? Just wondering.

  14. Thank you Anne for another beautiful pattern & blog! Love all the photos too!

Now, there is no excuse not to knit Tom a charcoal grey vest which he has wanted for 5 years now, so Tom thanks you too!

  15. Love all of the swester variations. What’s really surprising is how much I love the green! Thanks for the smile, David!

  16. it seems to be unanmous, everyone loves David’s smile. The pattern is so versitile and whoever talked about a charcoal vest for hubby–humm, I’m inspired. my husband loves vests.

  17. Anne, I rushed to buy this pattern this morning before I took my dad to the eye appt that took forever. Now I’m home and enjoying the blog with all of the lovely models and pictures. This pattern is a must knit. I know my son is going to love it. And I want one too.

David really does need his own puppy. I think these are the most engaging, precious pictures of David ever. Great photo shoot. Awesome pattern.

    Thank you so much!

  18. Mine all mine! I love all of the options. I love sport weight sweaters. Fun to knit and those textures show off hand dyed yarns so beautifully.

  19. This pattern is lovely; I bought the pattern on ravelry and plan to make the vest and went right to Woolen Rabbit to purchase the SW Sporty! Thank you!

  20. I’d love to ask Lara which is her all-time favorite Knitspot pattern to knit? Which does she were most often? And which do you wear most often? It’s so hard to choose between them. They are all lovely

  21. Michelle,

I love all of the Knitspot patterns and it’s hard to choose just one as a favorite. Blumchen would be on the top of my favorites that I have knit (two of them so far and plans for a third!) a close second would be Sticks n Stones. Since my hands are always cold I wind up wearing my Fallberry Mitt’s and Echo of Bells Mitt’s every day during the colder months. You really can’t go wrong with any of Anne’s patterns! The thing I love about Anne’s patterns is the attention to detail and that the sweater designs look good on so many different body types. She really designs the perfect sweater!

  22. This is another beautiful sweater! I too like the cardigan, but would wear the pullover too, and if my guy would wear it, I’d love to make one for him. He might wear it. Maybe.
David always looks great, but it is good to see the smile. It makes me think he’s having fun with the picture-taking.

  23. Anne, you and David are two of our favorite people! Add Lara and Andy into the mix and it’s a guaranteed fun time 🙂 Sticks and Stones is inspiring me to find the perfect sport weight to add to our line. I can’t wait to make it!

  24. Anne:

I love all 3 and, will naturally have to do all 3. I perused through Woolen Rabbit and have already earmarked some of her fibers. I love the subtle chic that is infused in all of your designs. It motivates me to do more and to be more creative.

    Maria.
