gotta get the loose ends gathered

Posted on Posted in designing, lace/shawls, projects

would someone please tell me how it got to be april 19th already??
the bad news is that time is going by so fast it makes my head spin.
the good news is—ELEVEN DAYS!

just 11 days till i take a break to get completely silly for four days with my buddies in san diego (oh, not to worry; i’ll be blogging it—but maybe not on my travel day).
i swear it seems like just yesterday i was typing emails to them that said, “20 DAYS!!”

anyhow. i have so much to do before i leave, but i can’t think what.
it’s been that kind of week (in case you couldn’t tell)—i feel very, very scattered.
for sure i need to swatch for some new secret projects to get those partially organized before i go, and i’d like to get a couple of things off the needles. like those socks up there.

well truthfully, they are almost done and the pattern just needs to be signed off by the test knitter and proofed, i think. so, not long on those.

i feel like i got hardly any knitting done this week. oh yeah, i didn’t get much done. lotsa fits and starts but not much to really grab a handful of, if you know what i mean.

this sock start got frogged—but for a good reason. actually, it’s more like we decided to back up a bit and start over. i got together with adam over email, and we put together a better plan for it. the yarn i have is a weight that he no longer carries, and it sorta defies a gauge that is commonly enjoyed by most sock knitters. so he is going to dye up some of his 950Mhz merino in this same colorway, send it to me, and i will re-commence with the caterpillar sock.

in addition, he plans to produce a kit for it which will include yarn and pattern at a nice price. we will be sure to tell you when all the details are set and we are back in action on that. in the meantime, if you think you’d be interested in getting some of this colorway, i know adam would love to know, so drop him a comment about it.

so—remember that unfortunate sock experiment a few weeks back (it doesn’t look that bad in retrospect, but it just felt all wrong)?
well, i finally revisited the yarn for another go and i think i like it a million times better.

i know. you can’t tell a thing from that photo, really. but it’s a nice, sleek, pleated motif. the yarn and pattern really show each other off well; this sock screams “accountant”.
this is my first experience with STR. i think this is the lightweight version (it wasn’t marked when i got it, so if anybody can tell from the photo, please let me know).
it knits up to a different gauge from most sock yarn i use, but i know david will like it (and how ironic for him to have accountant socks).
just wondering; do any of you STR fans find that socks knit with this yarn feel bulky inside shoes?

i spent a little time in the kitchen last night. we have a ton of eggs right now; local hens are laying so many that everyone has an excess. and what’s better than farm-fresh eggs?

farm fresh eggs with farm fresh asparagus, that’s what. mmmm, asparagus quiche.
when kim and i went to cleveland last week for fantastic food shopping, we, er, sorta fell down in the cheese department at whole foods, and i might have come home with several delicious dutch cheeses. i grated up some of each and a little gruyére, mixed some eggs and milk with pepper and a dash of nutmeg, roasted the asparagus with some slivered onion in the oven, and layered all of that into a pie shell.

i roasted some little potatoes to go with it, and there you have it. agreed, it is a heart attack on a plate. but so good. and i’m sure it could be made more healthfully, but i was splurging.

david also bought some rapini this week (i love this stuff), and i think i’m going to make a bean soup with it today (we desperately need to stock up the freezer with food for busy days).

in fact, i better go do that. more later; i have lace progress to show you and (hopefully) information about the kits for those new lace projects.

  1. That quiche looks yummy! And it may solve the “what am I cooking for tonight” question that popped into my mind a few minutes ago…

  2. I like the new sock; the pattern has really nice motion (and really, who can resist accountant socks??).

The quiche also looks wonderful. I wonder when my farmer’s market is going to start the asparagus thing? We have fiddleheads, but no asparagus. Maybe tomorrow!

  3. Hmm. The Lightweight STR doesn’t feel bulky, but the Mediumweight does feel a bit more substantial. I can’t tell for sure from the photo, but maybe you do have Mediumweight?

If you haven’t washed any, it does relax and soften substantially with washing!

  4. That quiche looks delicious! Years ago I was shopping with my mum and a friend of mine who looked at a box and said, “What’s Quee-chee?” Still makes me giggle… Now I’m craving asparagus and quiche. Good thing it’s nearly dinner time!
I’ve made socks with STR lightweight exclusively, I live in the desert and there’s not much need for heavy socks, and haven’t found them to be bulky at all.

  5. Quiche with Dutch cheese. the best cheese in the world offcourse ! Now I don’t want to brag ,ahum, but it IS good isn’t it ?

  6. OH my….that quiche looks deevine!!!!! I think that the STR yarn is very similar in weight to the yarn I used for my bee socks and shouldn’t be too bulky in a nice shoe 🙂

  7. Ymmmmm…. the quiche looks wonderful!

And I love Whispering Pines, AND the cranapple yarn! I just bought both — not sure when I’ll get around to knitting it, but it will definitely be for me! 😉

  8. Quiche, huh? hmmmmm sounds like plan for dinner tomorrow! I don’t have any asparagus, but I think broccoli will do nicely. 🙂

  9. I love the sock you are making with the STR. Does the STR feel as great to knit with as everyone says? I haven’t used it yet.
Also that quiche looks amazing. Quiche is one of my favorite foods, I have never had it with asparagus though I will have to try with seeing as I love asparagus, thanks for the idea.

  10. Those socks REALLY are cool. I love the pattern. They are way cool. Too cool for school….

  11. There is *nothing* better than fresh eggs. We used to have chickens, and a few milk goats, about 20 years ago. I made my own ricotta, had a wheat grinder and a pasta maker for my own fresh lasagna noodles, and we grew our own tomatoes. Heaven!

  12. I hope you find time to blog while you’re away! You will be missed. As long as you come back with some new goodies, then okay, I guess you can go and have fun. I love the sock. It’s great! Adam’s color is fun, as well! You’ve been so busy! Your work is appreciated, I hope you know.

  13. Yummy looking quiche. But I really love the sock very much looking forward to it. And I love the yarn would love to know the color name. As for thickness I think they are a bit thicker but not necessarily too much so. My STR medium weight socks that were knitted with ribbed instep and sole are too bulky for normal shoes but are perfect in running shoes where you want a bit more cush. I haven’t re-done the kitchenering of the toes of my Zombie socks yet so I can’t say about them. They were knit with the lightweight. if you like I could send you a sample of the lightweight and one of the medium weight (and for that matter one of the heavy weight too) so you can check which you have. I’ll try to get those toes redone tomorrow and let you know socks in shoes wise.

  14. Ooops, to clarify, I love both socks but the one I don’t know anything about other than it’s an accountant sock is the one that you’re calling the accountant sock. I followed your link for the yarn for the Ocean sock. I eagerly await that sock too.

  15. I’m late to the party here but I had to compliment you on that delicious-looking quiche! And i will definitely be on the lookout for the sock kit, too, when you and Adam put it together.

  16. I love rapini. I’m thinking of planting some in my garden this year (you’ve inspired me to expand my vegetable garden!).

  17. I think that STR lightweight feels bulky when I wear them, I love the colors, but I prefer a thinner sock yarn for my socks.

  18. That sounds yummy! I think I’ll steal your idea and whip something up for the church supper that we will be having to celebrate Orthodox Easter Saturday . . .

  19. You inspired our dinner last night. My 2-year old loves quiche, so last night there was a spinach quiche and an asparagus quiche. Thanks for the great idea!

  20. I’m behind in my blogreading right now, but thought I’d just chime in to say that while I do love knitting with STR, it does feel a bit bulky in shoes to me. I knit a pair of socks in the lightweight and it’s a tad bit heavier than other ifngering sock yarns to me.
