aloft

it looks like the ocean or at least some waterways coming in from the ocean but it’s not . . . it’s fog lying in between the hills of northeast ohio. so pretty.

we got an early start thursday morning just as the sun was coming up, so the cool air from the night before was still cradled in the folds between the hills. as the sun hit each successive section it lifted and dissipated. it’s a moment that you see on fishing streams too, at sunrise, and i’ve always enjoyed watching it.

i loved the plane! it was so much better than a flight in a big plane. more like taking the car, only up i the air . . it was awesome. we knitted

debby is making herself a morning glory wrap

the the briar rose grandma’s blessing she won last year.
she’s almost done; we’ll take pictures after we block it.

robin, our pilot, even had plenty of time to relax (hide your eyes if planes make you nervous)

apparently, you don’t really need to look around all that often if everything is stable. this surprised me, but did not make me nervous—for one thing, do you see anyone anywhere nearby?

this is NOT the same as talking on the cell phone and putting on makeup while driving on the interstate in morning traffic.

lacewing was my knit of choice and got half its edging on the flight out

i though i would get more done than that but i am apparently easily distracted by clouds; i ended up with something like 73 cloud photos. don’t worry, i’m only going to show you one more—a thunderstorm we skirted, closely enough to take a picture, but not close enough to catch the weather

the night before i left i was at the LYS teaching a class, and remembered that melissa carries knitting notions yarn and that she had my colorway at one time. a quick dig in that bin unearthed one last skein of pear. i quickly called david to ask him to locate a ball band so we could compare dye lots and what do you know? it matches, yay.
so i’m all set for yarn, and good thing too; i would surely have run out.

i could have undone some swatches but i was worried about that yarn felting; i’m much happier to have new yarn to finish the job with.

my niece susan modeled the completed half of the shawl this morning

i have to admit that after about five hours of knitting edging (i know
FIVE uninterrupted hours—that never happens at home anymore), i got a little bored of that so i took out the second pink sock and have been putting some rows on that

this is proving to be good knitting for this trip; i can do this while i talk to the kids or wait.

we landed in austin at just about 12:30 to a brilliant view of travis lake

which you can see is quite low. the news here is heat—it’s been incredibly hot, even for here, almost constantly since early summer.

some of us make the best of it, though

we can always stay in to knit and draw.
i’ll try to post again tomorrow, but it’ll be saturday, and the house full of kids (they are all at day camp right now; i can’t believe how quiet it is), so i’m not sure that’s gonna happen.

hopefully though, when i get home, i’ll have a finished shawl, woo-hoo.

  1. Lake Travis to natives, sorry to say. Glad you enjoyed your flight! I’m a cloud junkie, too, just not a small plane junkie. Have a marvelous, marvelous time, and don’t forget to visit Hill Country Weavers if you can.

  2. Beautiful knitting. I like gazing at clouds, too. I am surprised that even a picture out the window of a plane can make me feel disoriented. sheesh. but I am fascinated by the scenery.

  3. Seems like that pilot should learn to knit…although if he made a mistake and began yelling out curse words like I often do, that would REALLY make passengers nervous! *LOL*

  4. Are there awards for blogs? This is the very best blog and I love to visit it everyday! Thank you so much for all the work you put into it and for the wonderful pictures. I don’t know you – but you are a hero of mine – you always make my day!!!

  5. What an amazing trip! I’ve never done anything like that — how many seats did the plane have? Did it have a bathroom? (This is my perennial trip question.) The shawl is looking gorgeous, gorgeous. I can’t WAIT to get to the lacewing band…

  6. Love the shawl.

The one problem with a small plane is there is no way to get out of the sun. All that light does make for good knitting pictures, though.

    Have a wonderful time!

  7. I vote this one “most awesome post of the month”. The pictures are amazing! You’d have Saturday Sky all sewn up for the rest of the year, if you were into that. 😉

  8. Wow, I had no idea pilots could take it easy during a flight! If the weather is clear, the Ohio countryside (from the air) reminds me of a patchwork quilt. Your shawl and sock are looking really great!

  9. OMG!! The pilot’s reading the instructions!! Whoa! I’m so glad you enjoyed the trip, and you didn’t have any motion sickness. Have a great time!

  10. Hi Anne! Love the new shawl and the color is absolutely gorgeous – – way to go Anne! I am loving the sock you are making for David, love the color and the pattern. Looks like I may have to make this once its available. Thanks for the pictures! Glad you made it safely!

  11. Oh wow what absolutely stunning pictures of being “aloft”. It’s easy for me to say so, because I’ve never flown in my entire life, but I’d be distracted by all the wonderful clouds as well. I’d probably neglect my knitting terribly 😉 which is all looking so great btw.

  12. Gorgeous lace, beautiful flying pictures!

I’m not a big fan of small planes; the noise makes me edgy. For our honeymoon, my husband arranged for a friend of his to fly us to L.A. to catch our overseas flight. We were in a little Cessna, and flying into LAX with all the commercial jets was quite an experience. When we landed, our stopping distance was so short, we never even made it off the numbers that mark the beginning of the runway!

  13. Will you have a chance to go to Hill Country Weavers? And maybe some trip to Austin will include a drive down to San Antonio. I was just there in April (when the weather was actually very nice — sometimes summer starts in April, but not this year) but it seems like forever ago.

  14. Oh that sounds like such fun! I had a friend at work who flew. Until he got married and had kids and it became too expensive. He took us up once and I loved it but wasn’t willing to spend the money to learn myself. Maybe after the little one gets through college…

  15. have a wonderful visit with your family.
I love flying in small planes – haven’t done it for years, but it great.

  16. The plane ride looks amazing & the scenery is breathtaking. I love the pattern on the shawl & I can imagine the 5 hours of border knitting as I am doing the same on my Pi Shawl.

  17. While the pictures out the window almost made me break out in hives, the drawings are awesome! Oh, and the knitting’s not too shabby either…

  18. What great pictures but it looks a little scary to me, I really don’t like small planes. But what a good time to knit, and knit.
