winter with a twist

Posted on Posted in designing, lace/shawls, projects

the winter issue from twist collective came out yesterday . . .

and a couple of my pieces are included

these were two of my big secret projects in july. initially i submitted the faroese shawl and later we decided that a stole option should be included—it was a rush to get that one done

but we made it by the deadline, thanks to my superhero vanessa—she knit both of these pieces in less than three weeks.

the motifs knit into each piece are the same—i chose stitches with points and diamonds for an icy, crystalline theme, then expanded on that by arranging them in a composition that flows from the shoulders outward like a frozen wave.

i was thrilled to be able to feature two new colorways of fearless fibers laceweight merino in these projects—ocean breeze (the faroese shawl) and atlantis (the stole).

deb has been such a generous supporter of my work over the last few years and it was wonderful to present this collaboration through the magazine (not to mention the pleasure of knitting with her yummy yarn).

the two colorways look amazing together and apart; each one has a frosty winter whisper of blues, greens, and yellows that seem to be pulled directly from an ice floe.

i love the way they turned out . . . the photos in the magazine show them bathed in oceanside light (check out the extra photos on the pattern pages in the twist shop). look at cheryl, modeling them—how gorgeous is she?? i couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful presentation.

after the shawls were done, blocked, and mailed away, we waited to get the pattern proofs. rachel set to work examining them line by line to make sure they are the best they can be.

thank you for your patience with my secret knitting all summer; it was a real challenge to keep these to myself, and such a pleasure to finally be able to share them with you

and just because i know you so well, here is the backstage shot i think you really want

ok now . . i have lots of knitting to talk about too but i have to come back later for that—right now i have an appointment with renee, the wonder barber.

(OOOPS, just got home from renee’s and found this entry had never been posted—here you go!)

  1. Wow! These are truly magnificent Anne. And, so great that Fearless Fibers will get lots of recognition too. I just finished Punch and Judy and it was great fun. Your patterns inspire me to stretch my skills and learn new things. And the finished projects always make me look so good. Add to that Deb’s beautiful yarns and I think I have a queue that will last for decades.

  2. I always feel like we’re being invited to a special party when you showcase a FO this way. The photography and the display are equally as stunning as the gorgeous knit lace (and you, of course!). Congratulations on another fine objet d’art.

  3. Holy crumbcake, Anne! To my eyes, the edging in particular is fantastic! And yes the colorways are perfect! Now if only in your pattern shop you offered a quick and easy download for a 48 hour day so slower knitters like me can make sure to have time to knit one of these lovelies before the holidays. Think of the hits on that! 🙂 Beautiful work as always, Anne.

  4. Absolutely stunning, Anne! You are SO talented. I wish I could knit faster in order to make all of your wonderful patterns. Perhaps if I live long enough…

  5. Favorite colors, stunning designs, just wish there were more hours to the day! Extremely well done yet again Anne!

  6. God you design so much faster than I can knit! Of course I was making awesome progress on my autumn arbor stole and now it’s on hold for my own design… and NOW I’m off to find the yarn to knit one of these in!!!

  7. Simply beautiful stunning pieces of knitting Anne. Lovely yarn colors that remind me of the cooling sea breeze that we long for after a very hot day here during in summer. Thank you for more wonderful inspiration.

  8. Oh Anne, it’s so beautiful! The faroese version is so reminiscent of ice somehow, like those ice crystals that formed on old windows. And it looks lovely on your skin, you should go for pale blues more often. 😉

    Someday I will make a faroese shawl…

  9. Absolutely lovely – both the designs and the complementary yarn! You’re tempting us again. . . .

  10. They are both so beautiful !! And the colors of Deb’s yarn are really great !
Congratulations with beiging chosen to publish in Twist Collective AGAIN ! And they are so right, you are a wonderful designer !

  11. What a visual treat!!! Gaw-jus!!! now just where the heck are my needles? I now have my Christmas present for my best bud, Pepper, all picked out!!! These are absolutely stunning. Home run out of the park!

  12. Hi Anne,
    wonderful things!!!!
I wanted to order the pattern right now, to start knitting immediately.
Please help me in my cold Germany, today it is such a grey day and your shawl brings some light….
And now i have to wait for an answer for the time-difference.
    i swear, i can´t wait.
    petra
and whats about the frosty pattern…..

  14. Stunningly beautiful. Do you ever make anything that isn’t worthy of a blue ribbon? I dream of a world where I can have an uninterrupted week to finish one of your masterpieces.

  15. Wow, wow, wow. They’re perfect, and the yarn and the patterns are exactly right for each other. Love them. (And thanks for the backstage shot — I love faroese shawls all spread out like that!)

  16. Love both designs! Stunning! You are spot on about the frozen wave! And our Cheryl is a beautiful model!

  17. Hello Anne! I had the pleasure of trying on both the shawl and stole at the Twist Fashion show at the Yarn and Fiber Company and was amazed at how well the shawl stayed on my shoulders! FABULOUS! Your work, as always, was exquisite and Debs yarn luscious, too! Bravo! 🙂

  18. Anne, You need to slow down….how on earth can we keep up with all that you are doing….I keep buying your patterns but I cannot knit fast enough!!! You continue to outdo yourself….stunning!!!!

  19. Vanessa really knit them both in only three weeks?? amazing.
They are fabulous, Anne! And great photos (as always). I popped over to Twist ever so briefly the other day (before reading this) and immediately knew this was an “Anne” pattern. You just keep on creating all this beauty 🙂

  20. I have never attempted a shawl, always thinking that they were something made for/worn by older knitters (and, at barely legal drinking age, I don’t quite count). But this pattern has convinced me to put aside those ageist thoughts. I was struck completely dumb by it! It may not be wise to start on such a complicated-looking pattern, but I HAVE to do this!
