Lacinato Cap or Headband

Stranded colorwork leaf and vine motifs twine luxuriously around the brim of this cap or headband in two sizes (S/L) to knit in the round. Worked in soft, lofty DK weight yarn, the brim provides a dense, cushy windbreaker on the coldest winter days. The top part of the hat is knit in a softer, single weight fabric that slouches pleasingly in any arrangement of bands or stripes. Top with a pom pom made from leftovers for a fun final touch.

Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size and drape.

Finished Size:
17.5(21) inches brim circumference to fit heads measuring up to 20(23) inches around
Note: size may be further refined by using needles one size larger or smaller
Depth of headband = 4(5.5) inches / Depth of cap = 9.5(11) inches

Yarn Requirements:
Headband: Color A: 40(60) yards / Color B: 40(60) yards
Cap: Color A: 120(150) yards / Color B: 120(150) yards (including yardage for pom pom)

Gauge:
21 sts and 32 rows = 4 inches in stockinette on middle needles in Stone Soup DK (unblocked)
Note: gauge will be tighter in colorwork pattern

Needles:
6US (4.0 mm) 16-inch circulars for colorwork brim (or size to obtain correct gauge)
4US (3.5 mm) 16-inch circulars for hem ribbing (or .5 mm smaller than gauge needle)
7US (4.5 mm) 16-inch circulars and DPNs for body (or .5 mm larger than gauge needle)

Kalio Cowl

This cozy cowl in two sizes (petite/tall) is encircled by large leafy motifs drawn straight from the kale patch. This stranded colorwork project takes advantage of a deep, nearly solid foreground color to create distinct shapes with highlights in brighter tones. A tweed yarn for the background shade imparts a woodcut effect to the whole composition. Use soft, lofty yarns that will bloom easily for a final result with a consistent surface.

Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size and drape.

Finished Size:
approximately 22.5(29) inches in circumference and 9 inches in depth (washed and blocked)

Yarn requirements:
Color A: 125(150) yards
Color B: 125(150) yards
Note: solid yarn may be used as A or B; use same colors consistently throughout project

Gauge:
19 sts and 30 rows = 4 inches in stockinette on larger needles in Stone Soup DK (unblocked)
Note: gauge will be tighter in colorwork pattern

Needles:
7US (4.5 mm) circular needle for body colorwork (or size to obtain correct gauge)
5US (3.75 mm) circular needle for ribbing (or .75 mm smaller than gauge needle)

Bonus Colcannon Mitts Pattern

These cozy mittens in two sizes (S/M and M/L) feature a panel motif drawn straight from the kale patch.

Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size and elasticity.
