red scarf emergency

Posted on Posted in projects

my scarf for the OFA red scarf fund drive has been growing, with a row added here and a row added there throughout our travels. the other night we took my mom and my aunt to the movies and i knit a couple of repeats while we waited for it to start (i’m not really into knitting during the film, but it was way too dark in there anyhow).

when i was writing about it today, i went to norma’s blog to get a link and found the following important announcement:norma says that the scarf drive is in dire need of more scarves. apparently, it has not been a good year for collecting and they are very short of their goal.

so please, if you can find it in your heart and hands to make a quick scarf and mail it by december 15th, will you consider supporting the drive in this way?

these scarves are included (along with other goodies) in care packages that are sent to hardworking college kids who have aged out of the foster care system and therefore, do not have a family network supporting their progress. OFA makes sure that these kids have scholarships, supplies, counseling, and other things they need to finish their education; it is a most worthy cause.

your scarf does not have to be red or fancy in any way! a simple unisex scarf in a gender-neutral color, fiber, and stitch pattern is perfect—the guidelines and address for sending are in norma’s post today, along with a list of free patterns that you can use. it’s a great stash-buster project and something you can make a lot of headway on over thanksgiving (maybe even by knitting with friends and family instead of shopping!). you might even have one stashed away for gifting that would be perfect.

i was going to knit on other things tonight and tomorrow, but instead, i think i’ll boogie on my scarf—that might give me time to knit another one by the deadline, once i get home. wanna join me for a red scarf mini KAL?? how about if we have a prize?? pleeeze?

here’s what we’ll do: we’ll create a stickied thread in the the knitspot ravelry group where you can post a photo of your completed red scarf project and chat with other participants. everyone who commits to making a scarf can participate there, but only those that post a photo of a completed scarf will be eligible for a drawing to be held at the end.

on december 16th, we’ll pull one name from the ravelry thread (it MUST be someone who posted a completed scarf) and send that person a wonderful surprise package.

  1. Thank you for spreading the word! I figured that I wouldn’t do one this year, but I’m going to do an about face and start one tonight.

  2. Anne, first off, Happy Thanksgiving. What is the pattern for the scarf that you are knitting for the red scarf fund?

I’d like to start one for the fund and love the pattern you are knitting.

Thanks and have a thankful holiday.

  3. Here’s to hoping you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks for the reminder of the red scarf project. I have not participated in this worthy cause before and certainly plan to send a scarf I already have finished and knit another.

  4. Need to start another Palindrome once the yarn comes hopefully today. The last one I have to hold back-arg- the 4th ball has gone seriously awol and the length of the scarf falls 6 inches short of required 60 inches. I’ll happily knit more until the deadline.

  5. I just realized that I have a scarf in my “gift” pile… it’s not red, but it is quite nice looking and gender neutral… I’ll send it off. And I’ll try to get another one in time, but I won’t have much time until after decmeber 5th. But I sure will try!

  6. Thanks for posting that information. I didn’t do one last year and gave $$ instead because they were overwhelmed with scarves. I’ll find some red yarn and get to knitting over the weekend. I’ll get one done for sure.

  7. I’m so glad you posted – I’ve done this in the past but have stopped because they seemed kind of overwhelmed with scarves. I have a nice green irish hiking scarf I can send all ready to go!

  8. I put the call out to those who knit on my faculty, to a few knitting students, and to my knit group. I also hit the LYS on my way home and purchased yarn for four. Time to cast on! Enjoy you holiday!

  9. Casting on my red scarf tonight. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a safe trip home.

  10. I had no idea it was such a difficult year this year (I browse rather than “read” Norma’s blog). Hmm…. ponder, ponder.
