comfort me

a few weeks ago, i traveled to comfort, texas to teach and afterwards, wrote a post entitled “comfort me”. on of our delightful readers excitedly wrote me that when she saw the title of the post, she immediately thought i was about to release another version of our squish me cowl in our new yarn, confection worsted.

wow, i thought, THAT is a great idea for a blanket—simple to knit, a fascinating pattern to look at and to work, drapes beautifully—why don’t i just??

i asked erica if she could find someone who wanted to knit a blanket while i sat down to write up the pattern. she called back in oh, five minutes or so to say that our friend cherie was jumping up and down with her hand in the air, ready to get started. she even offered to get enough knit that she could show it around at rhinebeck (how can you not love her??).

so we got some yarn in the mail right away and sure enough, she had about half a lap blanket knit when i saw her less than a week later. the pattern was all proofed and ready to go as well.

sometimes things go like that with a new design—the knitting is fast and easy and fun, the pattern makes sense from the moment it occurs to me to do it and is straightforward to put together. it all bodes well for a successful project and pulls together in no time.

and it will be the same on the user side as well—this is a fun, quick knit, perfect for the forthcoming late fall and winter weather (did i mention yet that it is also reversible? it is.).

knit it while you watch TV and it will not only warm you, but be complete before you know it. there is plenty of time to make one or two of these before christmas. i can’t think of a better way to spend thanksgiving weekend than curled up with a project just like this one. sigh.

imagine this stretched out over your lap while the turkey roasts or while someone else does the dishes??  . . . heaven.

and trust me, no special skills required here—just an appetite for a bigger project that will make you look like a champ. it’s totally doable and fun for beginners as well as relaxing for more experienced knitters.

shown here: the lap size blanket in our bare naked wools confection; 100% soft and lofty corriedale spun into a 3-ply worsted weight yarn that is lightweight, warm, and snugglicious.

confection is so perfect for this design that david has created a kit to marry them together—choose any size or shade you desire and the pattern is free.

very many thanks again to cherie who knit this sample lickety split; she’s just terrific, isn’t she?

i’m also incredibly grateful to nicole and david for slipping in a very quick photo shoot yesterday afternoon so we could share this delicious project right away with you—i don’t know why, but this one is so exciting for me. i think it’s because it feels like it kicks off the holiday season somehow.

hmm, do i feel a bout of christmas knitting coming on, maybe a little blanket for each of the smallest nephews?

  1. Yay! Off to the pattern shop…Are any of the recommended yarns machine washable? Thank you!

  2. It REALLY is a fun knit; and the fact that it eventually warms your legs as you work? Bonus!

  3. You are so fabulous with textures. I just ordered the Jazz String socks for me (and my husband), but I am going to put this on the list as well. Stunning.

  4. Last week the weather suddenly turned cold and much more ‘winter’ than ‘fall’. I threatened to crawl under a big pile of yarn and knit my way out. And like magic, Knitspot to the rescue with an idea to do just that!

  5. Love this. I saw Cherie knitting it at the After Party and just had to know all about it. Will be getting the pattern for sure!

  6. Yeah!!!! I’ve been waiting for this pattern release since the after party at Rhinebeck. Can’t wait to get started!

  7. I’m trying to figure out if this would work as a prayer shawl. It does looks like a nice change of pace for that type of project.
