pine and ivy

what could be more magical than a little Victorian shawl with a bit of alice-in-wonderland whimsy and mystery? this delicate lace composition has the beautiful endpoints of a triangle with the gentle slope at the back and shoulder shaping borrowed from the faroese style. an enchanting hybrid creature knit of leaf, vine, and pine cone motifs, lured from a storybook just for knitters.

my friend kim from the woolen rabbit is always enthusiastic about our collaborations using her beautiful yarns; it makes me so happy to have her in my life to dream up and realize new projects together. please visit kim’s updated online store to see more of her luscious fiber offerings.

now, every pattern takes a village to bring to publication; this one in particular. i am so fortunate to have the eager help of test knitters (and dear friends) karolyn, carissa, leanne, and vanessa on board to carefully knit and check, knit and check, knit and check—you have to love them for their speed, good spirits, and accomplished stitchery—thank you so much.

and finally, a very special thank you to our model, my friend helena, whose poise and grace lend a special beauty to pine and ivy and whose sense of humor adds a lot of fun to my life.
(let me tell you, this kid is going places!)

  1. yesssssss at last! so these are the petite and tall sizes, but there are 3 versions listed in the pattern. is the medium not pictured? (and how tall is helena?) i just started one of those dreadfully boring laceweight stockinette cardigans with some yarn that i think might be too good for that project and i’m sorely tempted to rip it out & start one of these immediately… the only problem is that i’m on vacation & i’d have to go buy a duplicate of a needle that i have at home. maaaaybe i can wait til the end of the week. we’ll see. 🙂

  2. YAY!!! I just got the pattern. Love it! It’s gorgeous, just like I knew it would be. And your model is very pretty and very poised. David’s done another excellent job of photography.

I love it when you release a new pattern, Anne. It just makes my day. Thank you.

  3. Just when we think you will never design anything any prettier, Anne you do design something that is! (Kudo’s to Helena’s modeling–she’s beautiful)

  4. My new favorite… this is definitely one of the prettiest shawls you’ve designed. I seldom want to knit something NOW, but this one will be on my needles ASAP! (soon as I’m done with work, I’m ordering…)

  5. Absolutely gorgeous! I love it and it will be on my list of things to make in the future. Now, if only I were not so slow at knitting lace…..

  6. beautiful shawls. beautiful model. nothing more to be said! looks like the weather was super cooperative!

  7. Beautiful!! I’m ordering that yarn. Let’s see I’m still on edging for Honey Baby and then cast on for Maplewing last week. So many shawls . . so little time.

  8. Did you take those photos? They are gorgeous. THe pretty model- the farm and all are a perfect place to show off the shawls. That would look good in a knitting book! Hey – there’s an idea!

  9. Wow, wow, wow! I love it! This is next in the queue—I already have the yarn for it. Thanks Anne!

  10. Such a lovely shawl! And what a lovely young model as well! Another beautiful pattern to go on my wish list. (And that quiche from the day before looked so good–I haven’t made quiche in ages…)

  11. Hi Anne,

I have never posted here before, but I do follow your blog and have knit several of your patterns. Your creativity and artistry never cease to amaze me. This is a real stunner, and a true work of art. I have some yarn that I was saving for a special project and I think I have just found it. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the knitting community.

    Cheers,

    Nicole

  12. Another gorgeous shawl pattern … and, I really like Helena’s black sweater! Did you have anything to do with that?

  13. Yeah! It’s beautiful. Congrats on releasing yet another beautiful pattern. Absolutely love the setting for the pictures.

  14. It’s amazing to me how the two sizes look like two completely different beasts. I’ve got a commission coming for a wedding shawl and I pointed my client right to this pattern!

  15. This is great Anne. Just beautiful. I love the shape! I want to make it! Helena is beautiful, and David took fabulous pictures.

  16. so beautiful! I love, love, love the smaller version. The large one is gorgeous, but I need to be a bit more realistic of my skill and time limitations! the smaller one is perfectly amazing. wonderful work as usual.

  17. Hi Anne!
Congratulations! You have done it again. This is definitely one that I MUST make this year. The model looks great and love both versions of your shawl – – AWESOME!. Would you happen to know what pattern your model used for that skirt? I love the ensemble, but the skirt is the style I love. Thanks so much Anne and do keep up the great work. Rosalia

  18. Yay, another garment for my knitting queue! That is a beautiful shawl! I love the motif down the middle back — to me it looks a bit like stylized vertebrae which accentuates humanity of the wearer. Cool! I love wearable art!

  19. Oh, my gracious. I couldn’t even wait to comment – I had to order this one immediately. The petite size is especially enchanting, and I am beside myself with wanting to cast on immediately. I’m going to try to hold off and finish some projects, but believe me, it isn’t going to be too long before this one makes the needles!

  20. How sweet to see a young lady dressed so pretty! You just don’t see that anymore! Beautiful pattern too.

  21. I’ve been keeping my eyes out for this pattern to be released – it looks like I’m not the first to order it, but perhaps one of the first 100, eh? This is a beautiful pattern. I’m looking forward to casting it on.
