showers of light

ok, i got sidetracked.
i went upstairs to spin last night, but then i saw i had a bunch of yarn that needed to be skeined and washed form last week’s spinning. since getting distracted and feeling scattered were par for the course of my day anyhow, i fell right into step, and promptly forgot about the samples i was going to work on. instead, i skeined up the stuff that was waiting

there was a lot more there than i thought—almost 500 yards of the white/tan tweed and about 350 yards of the streaky black and white teed. nice! the small skeins are leftover amounts that i plied up for toes and heels or whatever. the plain white is the alpaca-only skein—ooohh, its soft and fuzzy.

all are in the wash right now and soon will be hanging in the breeze to dry. today is one of those days when the sky is brilliantly blue, the temperature is in the 60s and it’s breezy with rare air—that particular air that is the essence of freshness. it’s like that great drink of water you get once in a while when you really need it . . .

see, i’m getting sidetracked again, even as i write. i meant to work on my skirt some more last nght, but then i remembered that i’ve been putting off making (or even thinking about) a gift for a friend who is getting married. the obvious idea is a shawl, and i still have not thoroughly tested my “wing of the moth” pattern (i started to a while back with some alpaca, but then decided it needed to come out).
i also just happen to have some ivory douceur et soie (K1C2, kid mohair and silk—mm, mmmm) in the house.
now that is like dangling candy in front of a 4-year-old, in my book—how dare i distract myself so blatantly? naturally, i fell instantly, like a tree, from the wagon. sigh.
but, really—isn’t it wonderful?

isn’t it worth it? the falling-from-project-grace, i mean? so gossamer, so . . . luscious.
and those cocoons of light! captured within the mohair fibers and then bouncing off the silk as it pours by?

even in the dimness of the TV room one could see i made some right decisions here, . . .right?
(oh, and don’t we know how these heady days of an early project can alter our sense of awareness? mark my words; there could be trouble ahead . . . )

i finished the pick dress pattern this morning—scratched THAT off the to-do list! next, the shrug—YAY!

tonite we’re having company for dinner and i’m cooking with fresh herbs from the garden.
