bel air

there is something about the styles of the early 60s that always sets my heart to racing and the pullover knit shirt is one of my favorites. this lightweight sweater, knit in springy silk blend fingering yarn, captures all the details that define the look—a patterned front side, hemmed in coordinating rib trim is set off by sleek stockinette everywhere else. the buttoned placket allows a bit of versatility, while the relaxed ribbed collar adds stylish dimension at the neck. a three-season classic that switches gears from office to leisure wear with the smoothest of ease.

shown here: size small with three inches of ease, in spirit trail fiberworks sunna, colorway green velvet.

rhinebeck shoppers can view a sample of bel air, as well as purchase yarn and patterns, in the spirit trail booth in building A this weekend.

when jennifer heverly, the brilliant dyer behind spirit trail fiberworks, put this incredible yarn in my hands a few months back, i knew almost immediately it was right for the vintage shirt design which had been percolating in my brain for some time, awaiting the right yarn. i have felt lucky ever since to be collaborating with such a talented artist—her elegant sense of color and fiber selection is rare and wonderful; we are so lucky that she shares it with us. please take a moment (or more!) to browse the delectable selection in her online shop or at her booth during her upcoming schedule of shows.

many, MANY thanks to my friend barb, who put her speedy knitting to work and cranked out a test/sample knit in just a couple of weeks so we could make it available for viewing at the wool show. and now she’s knitting another for herself; can you believe it? jocelyn, karolyn, and anne marie have been hard at work on further testing as well—thanks to all of you for your help and talent!

and of course, david pitched in near the end to bring us lovely photos and video of bel air in all manner of detail; thank you david. now, let’s see more of his work:

  20. This is so lovely! I’m putting it in my Ravelry queue right after I post this comment. Now I wish I could knit as quickly as you produce these gorgeous patterns.

  21. I love the fit of this one. The perfect amount of ease, the precise sleeve/ shoulder join, the deep placket. Ralph Lauren, eat your heart out. I will have to keep this in mind, even though my queue is around the block.

  22. Wow, Anne! Another beautiful design; superb fit, wonderful design elements from the button placket to the choice of lace pattern, and as usual your modeling skills are brought out by David’s lovely photos. Brava!

  24. Another beautiful sweater! I enjoyed knitting with this yarn (soft and feels so good) The sweater turned out so nice and fit perfect. I must say I hated sending it off to Jennifer….but quickly got started on mine. Of course I’m alittle larger than Little Anne and knit the large. You look fab in yours and David did an outstanding job again!

  25. The sweater is spectacularly beautiful – but so are YOU!! The sweater fits you so beautifully! I can’t tell if I want to knit the sweater (and do I have the skills?) or if I want to look like you in the sweater.

  26. Anne, this is the reason we knit: to have a custom garment that fits to perfection. Beautiful work.

It must be so nice, having that nice long waist.
