we flung ourselves to fate

dear sheri,

i am quite sure i have never adequately expressed how very much i enjoy teaching at the loopy ewe spring fling. each year that i return (this was my third), i am amazed at how you continue to offer a cheerful, supportive environment where knitters can gather to retreat and just BE with their peeps for a few days.

a place where friends—both old and new—can meet and where desserts have no calories whatsoever.

you bring the best and most creative teachers to this magic place as well, to share their wit, wisdom, and positive spirit

and amaze us with their expertise

(sorry kirsten, but that one is, hands down, my weekend favorite!)

not only is it a weekend where we can all take a step back from our every day lives to enjoy learning and being new to something, but we can also feel free to show off the efforts of our knitting year.

the constant parade of finished achievements is both inspiring and emboldening, i think, judging from the happily flushed faces all around.

and that’s before we even get to visit loopy central—holy cow woman, do you have good taste or what?? you always know exactly what’s in a knitter’s heart

i couldn’t have said it better myself . . .

thank you again sheri; i’ll always enjoy working with you!

so, where were we before i left? we were expecting company and spinners in the same evening, as i recall . . . and barb showed up to class with two sleeves to show me for the cable and rib pullover sample she’s knitting (this is the sibling to the cable and rib cardigan i’ve been working on and showing you for a few weeks).

barb is knitting the pullover sample in briar rose fourth of july, in an absolutely gorgeous charcoal brown combination (the photo does not nearly do it justice). we’ll bring you more of this as the work progresses; it’s looking great barb, thank you!

then, just before i left, i got a small package from agnes that was filled with treasure.

agnes test knit the miss doolittle scarf, which, along with the neckwarmer, matches the eliza mitts we published a couple of months back. i will be blocking this piece this week so that we can finally release the pattern.

agnes is such a sweet, wonderful person; i wish you could all know her the way i do (well, you can get a good idea by joining our knitspot group; she’s one of our lovely moderators). and agnes wants me to keep it for the trunk show; isn’t that amazing? i didn’t want to take it from her, but she assures me she’ll be tickled knowing that it’s traveling all over with me . . .

now, here’s where agnes really shows her true colors

as if test knitting the scarf wasn’t enough, and letting me add it to the trunk show wasn’t over the top, tucked into the package with the scarf was this incredible pair of rimefrost socks that she knit in posh elinor . . . for ME!

i KNOW—i gasped and started to cry. it’s been a weird week or so since i got home from texas (long story, another time) and this was that cathartic moment i needed. haha, agnes, you have no idea what a completely charming and healing gift you’ve given me; thank you from the bottom of my heart!

(today’s fresh flowers from the yard; aren’t they pretty?)

i worked hard this weekend, but i feel like i had plenty of time to socialize and knit as well—not being connected to the internet all weekend has its perks.

i left home with just four small, lightweight projects packed in my bag and i actually worked on each of them at least a little bit during the four days i was away. one was wasp and rose and for some reason, i don’t have a photo update. but i do for the rest.

most surprising perhaps, is how much i got done on my sign of four sock. as you know, my sock mojo has been in hibernation for some time. i have a few second socks on the needles that need finishing, so i’ve been trying to grab one as i head out the door for trips, in an effort to get past this rut i’ve dug myself into.

this one was just twelve rounds long when i left home—i had the little cuff knit and that was it. i worked on this whenever i had to be ready to move at a moment’s notice (airport lounges, mostly)—something super-portable and chartless is perfect for those times.

turns out that a weekend of travel will get me a whole sock leg and part of a heel—which means i might be able to finish this puppy on my next trip (although i’m driving that one, so maybe not . . .)

then, i got quite a nice start on my two new lace projects.

this pattern of lace rib ovals is progressing nicely in sweet georgia cashSilk (granted, how could it not??). lovely in the riptide colorway (felicia’s photo is more true than mine).

this scarf has an added bonus

it’s equally interesting on both sides. not matching or even reversible, mind you, but lovely either way (at least, i’m liking it, haha).

and finally, the one that’s good enough to eat—i meant it; it’s like those gold leaf chocolates you find in über-fancy chocolate shops

considering the delicacy of the yarn and the deep color, i got quite a lot of knitting done on this piece—two full repeats and then some.

snort—of course i have many, many more to go, but preliminarily, i will say that this should be no problem. between the yarn—alishagoes around glint of goldfish lace—and the colorway (octavian) it is a complete pleasure to work on.

just sayin’ . . .

now, i know you’ve been waiting for word about our club and i can assure you that david and our webmaster, joe, have been working like madmen all weekend to finalize the website pages for signup day.

we missed our goal of having everything ready for yesterday, BUT i have just received word that we can open signups tomorrow at noon EST, YAY.

david and i are trying to confirm that we can give you a peek into the club website for a full description, but haven’t received word yet from joe. as soon as we do, we’ll provide a link here so you can peruse the club options.

in the meantime though, you can visit our fall in full color clubhouse on ravelry to get the scoop from kim, kat, and karolyn, who will be our club group moderators (thank you all so much!).

i think some excitement is already ramping up over there; they may even be serving cocktails by now, if karolyn has any say about it, hee-hee! and they have some preliminary details to share, so that everyone can be as prepared as possible.

til later . . .

i have to get ready now for my monday knitting class, but as soon as i can get back to the computer, i’ll update the information here and in the ravelry group. i think david plans to send out an email newsflash as well.

  3. I was so glad to get to take your class, and it was TOTALLY worth trading the Kiwi for it! I’ll definitely be making Sprossling this year. 🙂

  4. Anne, it was absolutely amazing to take another class from you. You have been a highlight to each of the two Flings that I have attended. I can truly understand why Tammy traded her wheel to my friend Val. 🙂

OMG, a club? I will be web stalking for sign-ups! I want in!

  5. Hi Anne, *hugs* for your ‘weird week’! I just signed up for your Advanced Lace class at Knit Nation in July. Looking forward to it!

  6. and lucky me as well anne. i have been on the receiving end of agnes’ generosity for quite some time now. she is an angel and YOU DESERVE IT!!
cannot wait to sign up tomorrow!

  7. I’m so looking forward to what you have in store for us.

Your Rimefrost socks go well with your bouquet.

  8. Aggh….I came within a hair of casting on Rimefrost last night but instead went for my favorite Hayrick pattern. Now I’m kicking myself after seeing Agnes’s socks…so lovely! Next pair…Rimefrost for sure. Agnes is such a sweetie!!

    Your little brown shawl…….swoon worthy!

  9. Agnes is such a sweet person. I actually knew about the surprise she planned for you and I kept it secret! To wear a pair of handknit Agnes socks is pure joy. Into each stitch you know she has placed her love and respect for you. You deserve it, Anne.

The Miss Doolittle scarf is beautiful. How like Agnes to want it to travel on trunk shows with you. I’ll be stalking this pattern and the neckwarmer too – even with my hot flashes!

The countdown is on for the club. I’m so pleased to be one of the moderators. I’ll do my best. Thank you, thank you, Anne, for all of the hard work you and David have put into this new endeavor. We love you both!

  10. Ah, the lace rib ovals are lovely! Can’t decide which side I like best–I think that’s a good thing.

  11. One. LUCKY. Dog. That’s all I’m going to say about you and those GORGEOUS socks from Agnes the QUEEN of nice. They’are so delicate and beautiful!!!

  12. Looks like you had a wonderful time in St. Louis.
The socks Agnes knit you are beautiful! Looking forward to seeing Miss Doolittle blocked–which sounds much worse than it is!
Will the cable lace scarf in the Sweet Georgia CashSilk need more than one skein? I have a skein in a lovely coral color that is looking for a pattern.

  13. Anne, your comments about Fling are beautiful. You so eloquently expressed what I have been trying to put into words…

  14. Aw, Anne, you made me cry too! Thank you so much for your wonderful, kind, sweet words. You are wonderful, kind & sweet & lovely & talented…! It is Always a JOY to knit your patterns!

I’m so fortunate to have close dear friends near to me who are also beautiful knitters.

Thank you all for your lovely comments & if you haven’t knit this pattern, you must! btw, everyone on the knitspot group is the nicest & friendliest, so please join us & also now the Fall in Full Color Clubhouse.

  15. Why can’t we do a Single Sock Swap? That way, people could send their yarn and patterns for the second sock to someone else to knit.

I have a Rimefrost which is pining for its as-of-yet-unborn mate. And EVERY time you release a pattern, I want to knit it. But if I could knit only ONE and then send my second one to someone else, I could complete a sock which is new to me but still fulfills my desire to knit your patterns. Hmmm…. Anyone else interested? (I think this would appeal to process knitters only).

But I’m looking at the new sock on your needles, and of course I feel I *have* to have it — despite the fact that I have a half-finished Pine Cone on the sticks.

Knitting comes with so many challenges. It’s better to look at them as options.

  16. Did you say cocktails??? LOL-the yarn, patterns & club should be enough temptation. Oh, and that Agnes is the best!

  17. Anne,
Thank you for the lovely photos of my SIL Linda! I am so glad you were finally able to meet her. She is an accomplished knitter! Hope to get to Spring Fling next year. Your sock gift is lovely! Thanks for sharing.

  18. I received the newsletter, and am looking forward to signing up for the Club!

If I may offer a suggestion, could you look at reformatting the newsletter? It arrives all on one big paragraph, and it is quite difficult to find the links in it, or to extract any information from it. A few line breaks would help to set off information.

    Thanks!

  19. The Sign of Four socks look like fun! Is the pattern available for sale somewhere or was it a club exclusive? Oh, and new lace scarves, yum…I just happen to have some of the SW Cashsilk in the stash awaiting worthy projects!

  20. Dear Anne, you so deserve to have something lovely knitted for you, after all the wonderful patterns you create for us! Your spring flowers are stunning – what a fabulous patch of colour they must bring to your home. I am loving that lace ovals pattern and can’t wait to see how it turns out. And, I am just so excited that I managed to sign up to your club!!

  21. What a wonderful trip to TLE–I really want to join you one of these days! I love Sheri and the Elves. I am delighted that you got a lovely pair of socks as a gift-you definitely deserve it. A big hug towards whatever made your week unsettling. BTW-I just got my first yarn ever from The Woolen Rabbit…oh my is it lovely.

  22. I love the socks that Agnes knitted for you – they are gorgeous & I would have cried too. Lucky you.
