socks is sprouting all over the place

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

i don’t really have all that much today . . . the weather has been fine, fine, fine (and very dry). i’m picking tomatoes and stuff still (which makes me happy).

i have my red sweater for knitting at night, while i hang out with david (i finished one sleeve and started another . . . more than halfway there).
and i have my swatching project for the week, which is coming together. i might even have something to show you over the weekend.

but two days ago, i realized that i had no socks on the needles. whatsoever.

and oh my, do i ever have sock yarn. and sock designs i’ve been wanting to do.

i got busy on the acorn socks, for the fearless fibers sock club. deb’s merino sock is an extra-fine sock yarn, so it needs to be knit on littler needles, but it’s totally worth it; the fabric you get feels like baby flannel.

ok, not so much real estate to see yet, but it’s going good, considering the yarn is fine and the stitch pattern takes some getting used to.
i am loving the colors; at first, you don’t notice the green so much when the yarn is in the skein. you see a little more of it once it’s wound. but then when you knit itโ€”WOW. the streaky-gorgeousness of it. it’s like natural stone, or butter toffee crunch swirl ice cream. mmm. oak-a-licious

then i got a second pair on the needles in a yarn i’ve been dying to share with you.
and in a stitch pattern i’ve been wanting to work with for years. i’m not kiddingโ€”i have had this one bookmarked forever.

i love the “dad’s old sweater” look of this pattern (ok, maybe not my dad, or yours; i know my dad had a real aversion to deeply-textured knits. but certainly the TV dads of my growing-up years wore this sort of thing, and i loved them for it. but not as much as i loved my dad, of course.).
in fact, i’m thinking of calling it cardigan.

anyway, how about that yarn?? this is NOT the same yarn as what i’m using for my sweater, BTW. it just so happens to be red, too . . . i guess that’s my color this month.
this is dicentra alpaca/merino sock yarn and you can get it at crown mountain farms (i just went to grab the link, and they are totally having a SALE. not on this yarn, but on some nice stuff).

anyway, you are going to love this yarn. it’s a little heavier than most sock yarn . . . more like a sport yarn, so it makes really nice boot socks, or house socks. i bet it wears like iron, too . . . it just has that feel to it. and i love knitting with it. it has great stitch definition and knits up quickly. AND one skein makes generous socks for david, who has very wide feet. i can knit him a pair on 64 to 68 sts, instead of the 72 to 80 i usually have to use.

i wish these red ones were for me, but they’ll turn out too big. i guess i’ll just need to get another skein to make mine, and i just might have to try another color (i already had the denim color, and it was a really good one, but it was a secret project so i can’t show you).
but not til after i knit some other yarns-in-waiting.

ok, just remembered i made a post about a sock for sale but forgot to publish it. i better skedaddle and get some (knitting work done, too).

  1. oh, i love that ‘cardigan’ sock – i can’t recall seeing too many deeply textured socks – it just looks wonderfully squishy and ‘chilly rainy weekend in front of the fireplace’.

  2. I can’t wait to see the cardigan sock finshed… it looks very promising!
80 stitches! And you still knit him socks? Now *that’s* true love.
Oh, And that’s a very nice throw in Knitty! I know… I’m late to the congratulating party, but it is very nice. And I loved the photo of the two of your (two) feets sticking out together. It made me smile. Made me want ot make one to snuggle with my honey under too.

  3. The acorn sock is the one I love–obviously I made a mistake in not signing up for Deb’s sock club, because I really love the colorways! I’m sure that your pattern will be wonderful, too, but there’s not a lot to see of it yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. The acorn sock is lovely! Can’t wait to see a little more of it! You are right about the yarn: the colors are simply gorgeous.

  5. I really really love the color of the yarn for the acorn socks, can’t wait to see when you get more of them on the needles. I recall that the swatch looked great!

  6. My dad definitely wore sweaters like that. In fact I’m reasonably certain that he still does. (Maybe not cardigans anymore though. When he was younger I think he thought it was stylin’ in a sort of old-fashioned way. But now he doesn’t want to look “old”.)

    I LOVE the socks. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. I love that red sock.Is that colorway “fire”?
I went to order some but im not certain of the color.

  8. what’s the colorway for the acorn socks? I looked at the fearless fibers website, but I didn’t see anything that really looked like it…?

  9. I have yet to knit with Deb’s (FF) sock yarn b/cc I am really lazy to knit with smaller needles and more stitches, but I’m going to have to get over it. Her dyeing really appeals to me, b/c it’s less crazy variegation all over, but more subtle shades. The skein I bought I just adore. I only wish it wasn’t 100% merino, but with nylon. But I will probably be indulging myself soon.

The cardigan socks look nice and cozy!
