second socks rising

Posted on Posted in designing, lace/shawls, projects

second socks are growing all over the place around here. i’m working my way through acorn sock #2 to test the finished pattern before i send it off to deb. angeluna is helping me, and i think we’ll have an very good pattern when we’re done.

with the cold weather that has descended (it’s snowing here today—just flurries—on and off all day long), i had a craving to finish off the heavier cardigan socks

they won’t fit me but snuggling up to this deep, cushy redness seems to make my hands warm all the same. they’ll be fab as part of david’s annual anniversary sock package (it will be seven years this thanksgiving weekend).

and i finished off one of the lady cardigans at rhinebeck but finally got around to taking pictures of the fit today

i just used finer yarn (kim’s wonderful lamsbool/nylon blend) and followed the pattern exactly the same way—they fit well, and will be perfect for anyone with a medium-width foot. if i make them again for myself with this yarn, i may use needles one size smaller (my feet are a little narrower than average) but that would be the only change.

other than that, i’ve been focusing all of my attention on the raven project. it’s going very well—the knitting is to the point where the rows are longer and it mostly looks like a big blob

this is a good photo of the color; see how dark it really is? i got a bunch of excited emails from those of you who leaped on the yarn when it went up for sale last evening; i’m so glad everyone is excited about this piece.
the fabric is just lovely . . fine and light. i am more than halfway done and i’ve only used about 2.75 ounces of yarn. when it’s stretched, it will be almost gossamer.

i am just about to begin the last section of the body, about four inches of knitting left. then the edging has to go on. i’m getting really excited to see what it looks like hanging, but i haven’t taken it off the needles for a look yet (ok, i’m scared—sue me).

and the pattern is progressing too. it’s hard to take sexy shots of pattern writing, though.

instead, let’s just rest our eyes on something . .. mmm . . . softer

inspiration hard at work but still evolving.

  1. I went looking for the Raven yarn too early yesterday and got seduced by a skein of Laci in the Red Clover Honey colorway for the Bee Stole. Need to have money for the mortgage next week. By the time I order the Raven I may end up with a whole flock. Thraven, of course, but I’m also looking at Haida and Valkyrie. So many choices, and all of them wonderful.

  2. Wow! I can’t believe all the knitting you get done — it’s amazing. I am loving those acorn socks. So many patterns, so little time. That shawl is going to be absolutely beautiful off the needles. No fear. 🙂

  3. I’d like to see the acorn socks on a foot. But I can wait. I’m good at waiting, sometimes.

I think I need to make some cardigan socks for my brother. His girlfriend took possession of the other socks I made him (a little small for him anyway). It’s the time of chilly feet! And none of us have enough wool socks.

  4. Wow, Okay – you know what? I don’t think I can read your blog anymore. The rate you are churning out projects right now is making me dizzy and I need to go take a nap just thinking about it. 🙂

  5. My head is spinning. How many projects do you have on the needles..? Don’t answer that, I’m sure my imagination is at least as good as the answer. 😉

    Love the cardigan socks!

  6. Your socks are looking good! I love the Cardigan socks, they just ooze comfort through my screen!

The Raven colors are beyond scrumptious. I’m soooo looking forward to test knitting that stole!!!

And of course I’ve already got my eye on Valkyrie for a Pi Shawl or something else that will show off the beautiful deep color of that yarn.

  7. Happy anniversary! because I’ll probably forget on the day. we have been married seven years too. socks are looking good, I so love the red yarn. The blog is growing how exciting. the yarn at the end is good colours the purples and blues. Hmmm, gets me thinking about dyeing yarn.

  8. Thank you for sharing your creativity and process with all of us. Your generosity and talent are very inspiring.

I am beginning to feel like an internet stalker, just waiting with eager anticipation for your most recent posts. **Grin**

  9. Hi Anne,

I can’t believe all the knitting you do? I have to say you must be a human knitting machine.

The lady cardigan sock looks like it will be a very warm one. Someone is going to have happy feet.

  10. You knit the most beautiful socks ever 🙂 You make me wish I was a sock knitter, maybe someday I will focus on them. Never know.

  11. Oooh, I love the Acorn sock pattern and the yarn. I was on Blue Moon last night, and I couldn’t make a decision!! It was so hard. I like these three:
Rauen, Thraven, Rook-y. How do you ever choose? I love the cardigan sock, too. I just don’t know how you do it!

  12. Beautiful socks and yarn!!! What I really want to know is how are the tomatoes doing on your vine with the little snow you are getting. Did you pick all of them or are they still on your vine?

  13. Oh what is that gorgeous violet/royal yarn? Will all be revealed soon? I can feel my do-not-buy-more-yarn mantra dissolving.

  14. The socks look super comfortable !
Happy Annisversary on Thanksgiving to you and David !!! Many happy years together to come !

  15. Anne- Those really DO look like little acorns. I’ve got my Raven yarn ordered and I’m good to go-

…not to pressure you or anything!

  16. You know, and if you don’t, you really should know, that if anyone could take sexy shots of pattern writing, it would be you… ah the pure beauty of that last little skein cake… are you telling what the yarn is?

  17. I am just dying to see how the raven project turns out. The suspense is killing me! Not to pressure you or anything. 😉

  18. Thinking about socks for narrow feet, I’ve been making the leg the usual width and decreasing more at the heel gusset to make the foot narrower. BTW, I’m in Cleveland, OH and have a sister in Dover, so amybe we can meet up some time.
