piling it higher and deeper . . .

the snow that is.
snow shawl is growing and i think today you can tell it’s bigger, so i snapped a photo. i’ve gotten through two levels of snowflake motifs and am moving on to the third next. then a band of crazy, allover snow blizzard, and after that we segue into the pine forest.

so far the charts are working like a dream; all that figuring and patience in placing the motifs has paid off with the knitting falling into place like clockwork.

i don’t have the blizzard chart figured out yet exactly, though, so i will need to spend some time on the computer with it to keep up with my knitting (i only have the next 32 rows in ironclad charts at the moment). ah, the suspense and intrigue.

it is very pleasant knitting too, which is why i have done more of that than i have computer work. it is great for evening knitting as the color is pale and i can see so clearly where i have been, what i am doing, and where i need to go.
and completely absorbing; i can do these motifs for hours and not notice the time passing.

that never stops me from sneaking in some crack knitting of course.
and i might have sneaked in enough to get the scarf finished.

and blocked. doesn’t judy’s arequipe yarn just make this piece?

it’s so dreamy. the tough part is choosing a color . . she has so many gorgeous ones.

i swear, i only worked on it late at night and only after putting in at least two hours of snowflake knitting (i know. as if that’s a real tough requirement) . . . .

ok, so i might have extended the late night knitting til 4am a couple of times.
like just last night.

but hey, at that point, i was NOT putting the pipe down.
and oh, those dyers love to aid and abet my addiction.

i dare you to tell me you could walk away from that. g’headโ€”lemme see ya give it the cold shoulder.

anne suggested last week that the scarf pattern would morph very nicely into a stole. and i had been toying with the idea, but then she started playing the pusher.
“i have this artisan cormo/angora laceweight that is millspun just for me” she weedled.

when i said i had been thinking of an evening coastal sky colorway, she lept on it.
“i’ll do damson plum with variationsโ€”i’m running downstairs to the studio now to put some skeins on to soak. i’ll dye it today and send it out tomorrow.”

and, oh, i am weak. it is the perfect storm.
and just as i was putting the last pins in the scarf this morning, the mail carrier arrived. natch.
with the stuff.

uncanny, right? anne assures me this is normal for us.

i have some nice photos of the finished sweater which david just took; i need to edit them and i’ll post ’em tomorrow. maybe we’ll even get him to photograph the scarf . . . (i might have to lure him with eggplant parm, but it would be worth it.)

  1. thank you sharing your addiction (i think). i’m thinking that scarf is just what i need!

and the snow…can’t wait to see what happens next. love!

  2. Ok your dealer is too hard to resist! How beautiful is that yarn. The crack knitting is gorgeous too! The snow knitting is looking bigger, you will be finished in no time; as usual!

  3. I’m loving the snow shawl! Is that it’s definite name, or are we going to come up with something more creative? If so, I think “Nieva”(nee-Eh-vah) or “Invierno”(in-vee-EHR-noh) would work well. They’re Spanish for “snow” and “winter,” respectively.

The scarf is fantastic too! You should definitely do a stole.

  4. David’s easy. ๐Ÿ˜›

I’m very intrigued to see how your blizzard comes out! I’m working on the Hanami stole right now and the end section reminds me a bit of a blizzard.

    Love the scarf, too!

  5. I could no more walk away from that damson plum than…. turn down good dark chocolate… mmmmm, I could almost eat that yarn!
Snow…. stunning snow, LOVE the snow!

  6. Oooh, oooh, coastal sky! I’m all over that! I love the snow shawl and the new scarf. Awesome, awesome. Judy’s yarn is so pretty. I want a sweater pattern–you know, just anytime you have some spare time. You can’t forget the Mexico thing, either. I’m sure it’s percolating, though.

  7. Oh, the scarf is gorgeous. And that yarn! Heavens. How do you get *any* work done at all?

P.S. You probably have gotten a ton of these, but I gave you a “you make me smile” award on my blog. Just thought you’d want to know. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. What amazes me about the scarf is how the variegation adds to the piece. So often variegated yarn detracts from the pattern or the pattern from the yarn. Not this time. Another beautiful objet d’art.

  9. I knit “That little scarf” as a Christmas present and liked it so much I was planning on making one for myself. Butttttt now you went and designed this lovely new scarf. Now I need that one too. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. i begin to understand why you are so good at tempting us to new and lovely laces – you’ve been under the tutelage of temptresses with wool and alpaca and silk and angora. when presented with such lovely yarns in such lovely colors – which then lead to lovely knits – how can any of us resist?

let me also say – i’m glad the snow’s piling up indoors – and not out!

  11. I cannot wait to knit that gorgeous scarf! I’d like to order the yarn now (before it too late!) can you let me know how many skeins is needed? and any idea when the pattern will be available? Hopefully I can order the yarn now and have it ready to go!….. also…. what type of wires do you use for your blocking?
thanks for letting me pick your brain ๐Ÿ™‚
    Have a great weekend!

  12. I really love watching (or reading/viewing rather) your design process… the yarn, joys and frustrations….progress… and finally the end result. Thank you for sharing, it makes for an interesting read, albeit an envious one! ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. the scarf is just lovely. combination yarn and pattern!

i’ve been avoiding some knitting at home and i think this may just be the post that gets my booty in gear again.

  14. I think the most fun shawl I ever made was a circular one from Meg Swansen’s “A Gathering of Lace.” It was so weird to work on this shriveled octopus sack—but it made working on it in the round so fast and fun. I really look forward to trying your snowflake. It will have the same rewards.

I’m halfway through my honeybee stole and loving it. I decided on a very non-honeybee color; Zephyr Chanel. It is my own crack knitting for now!

Thanks. I enjoy your posts very much and am always inspired to get to work and to be creative.

  15. Oooooh! Purty yarn! Purty shawl and scarf too. Man I’ve got to get knittin’ there’s too many upcoming new projects I’ll want to do.

  16. That makes the nicest snow pile!
With the angle at which your photographed the scarf in the first two pictures, the stitch pattern looks like little fans to me. Very pretty!

  17. I can’t believe all you have accomplished in the few days I was too busy to look. wow.
love the little nothing, love the sweater.. the snowflakes are dreamy… and am all a twitter over that yummy purple yarn. and your frosty photos are outrageous cool.
(PS> I would definitely be swayed by eggplant parmesan.. just sayin’ – grin)

  18. I haven’t been online too often as of late, but I decided to stop by your “place” as see what’s been happenin’. Quite a bit I see ๐Ÿ™‚ All good stuff too. Your sweater turned out beautifully, and your new snow shawl is perfect for this wintery weather. Don’t you ever run out of ideas lol ;)?

  19. Anne, what is the color of Arequipa yarn you’re using for the scarf? I don’t see anything on Judy’s web site that matches.

  20. Drool. They all look gorgeous. If I had to choose, I couldn’t, one is more beautiful than the next. And hey, I’d do anything for eggplant parm. I can’t get the rest of them here to eat it, so I never get to make it…!

  21. Ooh, it is so purrty!!! The color on the scarf is beautiful. I can’t wait to see the modeling pictures of everything:-)

  22. Once again you you talent inspires and continues to amaze.

I look forward to each new post and what wonderful beauty you bring into my life almost every day. You help me see the world with a different point of view.

    Thank You.

  23. Are boys allowed to wear little nothings? ’cause I wanna.

I gave you a “You Make My Day” award on my blog! ๐Ÿ˜€ You can get a button there so that you can pass it on to others who make your day.

  24. Your scarf is very, very beautiful. Yes, the colorway is gorgeous. And it’s nice hearing you be so positive about the shawl. It’s very uplifting, and I’m glad it’s going so well! =)

  25. It’s beautiful the little nothing scarf. Judy’s yarn does make the scarf.

The new yarn from anne sounds delicious. At least I won’t be tempted by angora though, I’m allergic. The color is heavenly though.

  26. I love sweaters with a big center cable, you look wonderful in it. And you look warm.

I totally understand the 4am thing. I do that at least once a week, I’m so into what I’m doing I can not stand to stop. Totally understand.
