Vintage Knitspot – Juerga

Posted on Posted in projects

Over the holidays my parents got me, along with Matt, hooked on Downton Abbey. We had never watched an episode and in days we finished Season 1. Holy cow were we missing a lot of fun! Then came the tears because Season 2 wasn’t on Netflix. My parents had all ready watched it, but Matt and I were sunk. ah…but then I found Season 2 on Amazon Prime. We got all caught up in time for Season 3 to start on PBS. Before Season 3 Episode 1 aired in the States, my parents were lucky enough to score tickets to watch it in the theater!

They said it was amazing and they wished they could watch every episode that way. The event was sold out and mom said it was a blast to have a room full of people laugh at the funny parts and gasp at the shocking parts together. I bet.

I am in love with the every bit of the show – the drama, the time period, the English accents, the clothes, the food, the table settings… I could go on.

For Christmas my mom bought us skeins of Lorna’s Laces Sportmate in colorway Christmas at Downton. Could it get any better? I labored until last night about what pattern I wanted to knit. I wanted a small accessory. I wanted a simple yet sophisticated stitch pattern that would look gorgeous in variegated yarn. I decided on Juerga.

This pattern is just adorable! It knits up very fast in sport or DK yarn. Don’t believe me? Look closely.

The mitts don’t have thumbs! They’re just cuffs. Is this not a fun pattern? Couldn’t you see cranking out tons of Juergas as gifts?

The largest size only takes 215 yards for the set. Such an economical gift. I know LOTS of loved ones that would pass out if they got this set. Yep, call the paramedics. I predict a good bump on the head after suddenly finding themselves horizontal from this beautiful handknit.

Christmas at Downton is a gorgeous colorway. I only have four rows of the neckwarmer done, but I know it’s going to be beautiful!

It’s the perfect combination of all my favorite colors. My plan is to keep watching episodes over and over this weekend until the new one airs Sunday night. The anticipation kills me, but I get a kick out of hearing the dialogue of past episodes as I knit. I am always surprised how I missed a funny line the first time around. Plus, I never get any knitting done during a premier episode. I plan on it, but when the credits roll on the screen I realize I’ve just been holding my knitting the whole time. I guess this is why I usually knit to old Law & Order episodes or my fave movie Rear Window.

I’m curious…do any of you watch TV series as you knit? Or movies? Or listen to audio books? Tell me all about it in a blog comment by 11 pm EST on Jan 21. One of you commenters will win a $10 gift certificate to the knitspot pattern shop.

  1. I enjoy listening to audio books when knitting, especially if the project requires more concentration. But I’ve got a garter stitch shawl project that’s just perfect for knitting along with Downton Abbey episodes. Like you, I was a little late to the party but now I’m hooked.

  2. I love British murder mysteries: Morse, Midsomer Mysteries, Single-Handed (Irish), Taggart (I don’t care how old), Prime Suspect. I’ve seen these so many times that I have the dialogue memorized and the plots so knitting is relatively easy to these shows….

  3. I love to watch movie series too. Favorites include the recent “Little Dorrit,” all things Elizabeth Gaskell (Cranford, Wives and Daughters, North and South). And knitting keeps me company when things get scary with Bleak House and productions like that.

  4. Love to watch downton abbey and also Emma playing on the Knowledge network both great series to watch and knit to’s. But my all time favoutite to knit with is Hockey Night in Canada! Tonight is watch the Canucks and work on the Roger socks!

  5. I like to knit while watching TV shows that I have already seen. I also like to knit while watching movies that I think are going to be really sad–that way I don’t get quite as involved in the story.

  6. I always knit while watching movies at home (and sometimes in the theater if I have a simple project). I don’t watch much TV but am addicted to Downton. i usually have a project that I can knit on without looking at it (no lace charts!) that stays by my TV chair. I taught myself to knit while not looking at my hands while in college so I could knit and study at the same time.

  7. Yes! I knit while watching tv! Person of interest, Fringe, the killing, Downton – you name it I watch it – tonight I knit a baby sleeve while watching Selfridge with dh and no.2.son – I don’t mind the endless football with three males in house = lots of knitting!

  8. I LOVE to listen to audio books while knitting. I am having a bit of a science fiction/fantasy obsession right now. What a combination! Nothing like dragons, witches, and magic to go with a nice lace shawl pattern.

  9. If I’m watching tv, then I’m knitting. The knitting makes me feel like I’m being productive while letting my brain turn to mush. My fav shows are CSI (Las Vegas), Big Bang Theory, and Modern Family. From Netflix, I’ve been watching The Wire, an old series, but a good one. For Podcasts, I find The Moth, Freakonomics, and NPR’s Science Friday are fascinating.

  10. Knitting is the best way to watch television. I knit to anything I watch. Depends on the show as to whether it is easy or complicated. I love Downton Abbey.

  11. I agree that it has to be something I’ve seen for me to make much headway! I am not good at knitting while looking at something else. Not even plain stockinet the!

We just finished season 1 of Downton Abbey! LOVE it!!

  12. i have always watched something while knitting – TV or movies on video. lately, though, i have been into watching TV series, either on DVD or online. i love the older series, like the gilmore girls, that had many seasons of shows, so i can just immerse myself for the whole weekend.

  13. Like you, I used to sit down to watch Downton Abbey (or Inspector Lewis) with my knitting in hand, but now I’ve given up and just have a cup of tea in hand as no knitting ever got done. I’m also addicted now to Call the Midwife, and can’t wait for Season 2.

  14. I’m kind of a nerd and like watching How the Earth was Made or any type of history shows like that.

  15. I’m pretty much the same way. I plan on easy stockinette knitting when I watch something new, but always end up just holding the needles until the end credits. No worries, I can always watch the episode again and knit the second time around. Hearing the events play out again is somewhat comforting because you already know what is going to happen next. Yet it is still satisfying to do so while actually knitting is progressing in your hands. I’m probably going to be better off with an audiobook that way.

Thanks for the opportunity to win the certificate!

  16. I’m always doing two things at once…watching movies/TV shows, talking on the phone etc while knitting. Sometimes I have to TINK to where I started, but that’s another story…LOL.

  17. I can only knit if I’m not that interested in what I’m watching. With Downton Abbey, I am glued to the screen. Like you, I had to catch up in advance of Season 3. It was a marathon to finish but I’ve loved every minute.

  18. Law & Order is my go-to show for when I want something on the TV, but nothing that will distract me from my knitting. Glad to know I’m not the only one! 🙂

  19. I have always had something for my hands to do when I watch TV. It was embroidery, or needlepoint or hand quilting, and now 99% knitting. The complexity of the knitting is based on the show or movie. Repeats of Northern Exposure, MASH, Twilight Zone, movie repeats, and most sporting events rate a complicated pattern.New shows, Project Runway, new movies, etc. all rate simple socks or gloves or scarves. Thanks for the great contest.

  20. I have spent the last several months knitting while watching all seven seasons of The West Wing. And I’m also another Law & Order knitter.

  21. I do like to knit while watching TV and listening to audio books. I am still in Season 2 of Downton Abbey, and it is a wonderful series. I like all kinds of audio books, and listen to NPR and knitting podcasts as well.

  22. I love to knit to law and order too, but west wing on amazon prime is my favorite- until baseball season!

  23. I like to watch knitting video podcasts as I knit. There’s a lot of chatter, so I don’t have to watch the screen constantly, and can just take visual breaks to check my knitting as I need to. Love Downton Abbey and glad you are enjoying it too!

  24. I can’t watch tv without knitting! I’ve been watching downtown and a series called “wild at heart” – set in Africa and lots of animals! Before that, I watched Rosenary and Thyme – a fun British mystery show

  25. I love knitting whilst I watch TV and I too am a Downton addict. Been lucky enough my inlaws live in Scotland I got given the 3rd series on dvd for Christmas. My daughter got back at New year from London and brought me back the Christmas 2013 Downton edition on DVD that had just aired that Christmas. Wow!!!!!!! You are in for a real treat!!
Must admit I too slow down when I’m knitting when watching Downton! 🙁

  26. My kids seem determined to watch every episode of “How I Met Your Mother” about 5 times each. Therefore, I knit while watching “How I Met Your Mother.” A new pattern to do it to would be excellent compensation.

  27. I often watch knit while watching TV or movies at home. Movies new to me or TV shows with new episodes may lead to more of me holding the knitting rather than making progress. When my DH wants to watch a movie with lots of fight scenes, I do get alot of knitting done then. I don’t want to watch fights so, I keep my eyes focused on the knitting rather than the screen.

  28. I’m totally sucked into DA along with Breaking Bad, kitchen nightmares, and the walking dead.

  29. I, too, knit my way through the first two seasons on Amazon Prime recently (luckily I’ve learned how to knit without looking, though I have to choose projects carefully) in preparation for season 3. I love it! I put my iPad on a music stand next to my knitting chair and was glued to my seat for 3-4 episodes in a row over a few weekends.

  30. My daughter got me hooked on Downton Abbey. I bought Christmas at Downton to do the KAL at Jimmy Beans. When I knit I love to watch TV or listen to audio books.

  31. I always knit with the tv on in the background……My favorite show to knit too is Survivor…I’m a reality TV junkie..lol….I have to watch Downtown Abby…everyone is talking about it……..

  32. My favorite knitting accompaniments are audiobooks. Usually I listen to fantasy novels or historical fiction, and I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. I compete in Ravelry’s Nerd Wars on Team UU, so listening to Discworld audiobooks and knitting makes a perfect combination.

If it’s a simple garter stitch or stockinette project, I’ll watch a bit of television, especially if the PBS Mystery! series happens to feature Wallender or Inspector Lewis episodes.

  33. I can’t knit and watch Downton either. I get sucked in and can’t knit a stitch. Love the show.

  34. I am quite sure that Netflix was invented by a knitter. I knit allot of socks, and I remember them by what I was watching while I knit them—right now I’m knitting a pair designed by Hunter Hammerson and watching “West Wing.” I love to que up a long-running series when I start a project.

  35. My favorite things to watch while knitting are football games, you can get a lot done between plays, or PBS shows. Otherwise, I read while knitting and DH has his action movies.

  36. I often knit while “watching” TV. More frequently this leads to just listening so if it’s something I really want to watch I try to have a simple project to work on. Audiobooks would probably be a better choice but haven’t tried that yet. It really feels like a luxury to watch TV without at least TRYING to knit. I think many knitters probably feel this way – the ultimate multi-taskers!

  37. What don’t I watch while knitting? Favorites in my house include: American Idol, True Blood, Hell on Wheels, Homeland, The Killing, Shameless, Nurse Jackie, Glee, Smash, 60 Minutes, and of course football and golf if DH has the clicker.

  38. I prefer to knit and listen to an audio book when I’m at home and have to concentrate. But a nice series is the next best if I don’t need the high concentration. Thanks for the contest. That is a beautiful pattern and a great gift idea. I am looking forward to purchasing and knitting with knitspot yarn.

  39. I like watching PBS series like “Call the Midwife” and “Downton Abbey” and reruns of the other Masterpiece Theatre productions but can’t seem to knit very well if it’s suspenseful!

  40. I almost always knit while I watch TV. There’s a definite relationship to the amount of knitting I get done and how absorbed I get in the show!

  41. I always watch TV while knitting at home in the evenings. Usually my favourite thing – socks.

  42. I feel unproductive if I am just sitting on the couch watching TV. Complicated knitting goes well with TV sport. Here is Australia at the moment we have the Australian open tennis on. Goes great with knitting. Aussie rules footy is also good (as is cricket). New TV stuff I need to knit simple things like stocking stitch.

  43. Yay! Another contest!

Generally I listen to audiobooks while knitting. I try not to knit while I watch Downton Abbey so that I don’t miss any of the sets or costumes.

  44. I LOVE watching TV and knitting – – can’t do the audiobooks because I find I’m captured by the story line and lose my place easily!

I have a very dear friend WHO READS AND KNITS – – and does beautiful work!

    (I LOVE Downton Abbey!!!) – –

  45. So glad to hear there is another Downton Abbey addict out there now! The theatre sounds like an awesome way to watch it… so jealous.

I enjoy listening to hockey games on the television while my husband watches them. Now that the season has started up again I look forward to some quality time together!

I also has recently begun to listen to audiobooks while knitting. How fun to get two things done at the same time!

  46. Hubby and I listen to audiobooks downloaded from our local library. We love mysteries. Lots of knitting spend whiles listening.

The idea of mitts being cuffs is wonderful.
Your are striking, especially with the cowl!

This pattern will be added to my iPad!

    Hugs

  47. I listen to audio books constantly…while I knit, crochet, spin…cook, clean house. Fortunately for my pocketbook our library has a wealth of audio books.
BTW, if you haven’t located a source for season 3 don’t forget to check your local library for Downton Abbey dvd’s. I’ve viewed all 3 seasons thanks to my local library.
