Vintage Knitspot – Snow on Cedars

Posted on Posted in patterns, projects

Ah, it’s time once again for me to dust off the archives! Anne is super busy with all kinds of fun stuff (she’ll fill you in on Sunday) and I didn’t think you’d mind a little trip with me down memory lane. Plus, there’s a contest involved!

With the metro Detroit area covered in a new blanket of snow, it seemed apropos to highlight this beauty of a mitt pattern.

Snow on Cedars is a mid-length mitt with allover lace motifs of pine trees and snowflakes. Doesn’t this seem like the most delightful thing to knit for a friend? It’s the perfect accessory for chilly offices or knitting in drafty places. Or to wear running errands and not be bothered with taking your gloves on and off.

It’s a pretty quick knit as well because the right and left are interchangeable. I can’t imagine I’m the only one that has knit two left mitts. Even I can’t screw this one up!

Don’t you just want to wrap these mitts around a hot cup of tea as you gaze out the window at the snow covered pines?

Can’t you see these mitts done up in Breakfast Blend Fingering? Won’t they be a little piece of heaven for your hands?

I think this duo and I are going to spend some time together this weekend. Hmmm…coffee, hot cocoa, tea, hot toddy…I definitely have options. Or maybe you guys can help me. What is your fave hot drink? Leave your suggestion in the comments by 10 pm EST on Feb 24 and I’ll pick a winner to receive this mitt pattern!

I’m off to check on Baby Knitspot before I turn in for the night. Today he turned 6 months!

I can’t believe it. It seems like Aug 22 was yesterday.

Happy weekend everyone!

  1. Like everyone else, I can’t belive how fast the time has gone. He is a lovely baby. Drink wise I like hot chocolate, but my favourite is hot mulled wine at christmas. So yummy! x

  2. Try the Mexican Hot Chocolate recipe from Gifted by Mags Kandis – EXCELLENT!

If you don’t have that book, the Mint Hot Chocolate by Penzeys (www.penzeys.com) is also very good.

I use chocolate marshmallows in both recipes. And Ghiradelli choc chips for an extra garnish.

    ENJOY!

  3. Love hot cider with a cinnamon stick. Also love the sweet picture of your six month old big boy. He gets cuter by the day…heartbreaker alert!

  4. I love herbal tea. My favorite is Tazo “Wild Sweet Orange”. Add a little honey and you’re in heaven!

  5. Right before I got to bed, I love making a cup of Yogi’s Bedtime tea. It’s wonderful and relaxing. 🙂

  6. Favorite drink currently is tea: David’s Après Ski or Super Chocolate, or Churchmouse Winter Blend. I am on a tea exploration at the moment. The ritual of tea-making with the kettle, the pot, the milk, the mug, etc., is so alluring!

  7. My fav hot drink is hot milk with a dash of real vanilla extract….mmmm so nice to have at the end of a long day!

  8. To fortify me, before I walk my 2 beagles in the cold and now snowy Chicago burbs, I drink freshly brewed coffee, actually 2 cups-black only! Really good coffee. My special treat is Doewe Eggberts that I have to get by mail. It’s sold from EnjoyBetterCoffee.com When I run out, or on a normal average day, I rely on either 8 o’clock coffee, Dunkin Donuts coffee or even Maxwell House coffee. Last week I was on vacation with my friends and we bought Maxwell House original coffee. I was shocked at how good it was! I have a 12 cup maker and after my husband and I blow thru this, I brew 8 o’clock K-cups in my Keurig. I found this brand makes the best Keurig coffee. Only wished Doewe Eggberts came in K-cup form.

  9. Hot buttered rum! Using spiced rum and the recipe for the mix that includes vanilla ice cream and butter with spices! There’s still some mix in my freezer…at least for a night or two! 🙂

  10. Hot chocolate made from scratch on a rainy day. It’s also one of the few things that I do make.

  11. My thing is hot chocolate with my homemade marshmallows. My last batch I flavored with a tiny bit of rum, so they ended up just for me! Too bad no one likes rum the way I do! LOL

  12. I’m mostly a hot chocolate girl, but I had a Cafe Italiano at the CIA in the Hudson Valley, and it was really good! It’s coffee w/ cream, brown sugar, brandy, and whipped cream. SO YUMMY!

  13. No Microwaving for me. Heating my skim milk on the stove with a 30 year old copper bottom small sauce pan then mixing it with my Big Train Chai mix in my favorite Snowman mug. Mmmmm

  14. My favorite hot drink is an Irish coffee TV coffee with Bailey’s instead of creamer. Non-alcoholic drink would be hot white chocolate. I’ve only find two places that make it with actual white chocolate (not powder). Yum!

  15. My favorite hot beverage is the spiced chai from David Scott’s “Three Bowl Cookbook”. It’s absolutely delicious, and can be kicked up or down a notch, as desired. Plus, the simmering spices make the whole house smell wonderful!

  16. A latte held in hands wearing those beautiful mitts would be so warming! If I am not at my favorite coffee spot, I froth hot skim milk in my blender. Mmmmm!

  17. I’m loving Chai tea or a great cup of hot. Hoc plate with a wee bit of peppermint and whipped cream or marshmallows. Baby knitspot is absolutely adorable!! Thanks for the giveaway!

  18. Most of the time you’ll find me with Coffee. Though I have been known to step out with Hot Tea, Hot Apple Cider, Hot Flavored Coffees, Hot Latte/Cappucino and Hot Chocolate. These mitts are beautiful! Thank you!

  19. Coffee is my addiction…. Can’t get enough! And baby knitspot has gotten so big! Where has time gone?

  20. Naturally, I’m going to suggest a Peppermint Mocha… but I’ll go one better and lave you the recipe too. Tastes just like Starbucks, I swear!

    Ingredients:

    1 cup milk, steamed
1 cup very strong coffee (4 tablespoons coffee grounds to 1 cup of hot water, done in a French press or drip machine)
    1 tablespoon cocoa powder
    2 tablespoons of sugar
    2-3 tablespoons peppermint syrup
    Whipped cream
    Chocolate Syrup
    Crushed Peppermints

    Directions
    1. Prepare your coffee however you choose.
    2. Grab a pot, heat up one cup of milk until it is steaming. Froth the milk – you can just whisk it into submission or toss it in a blender.
    3. In your favorite mug, mix together the coffee you just made, cocoa powder, sugar, and peppermint coffee syrup until the sugar and cocoa powder are dissolved and there are no lumps. I take the back of my spoon and smoosh the lumps against the side of the cup – works like a charm. Now you pour the foam over the top of the coffee/mocha mixture. Stir it up and finish it off with whipped cream, a wonderful drizzle of chocolate syrup. You can a bit of fun by added a candy cane to the cup or crushed peppermints to the top.

  21. Hot cocoa, dark please. Sometimes a giant marshmellow on top, if you want extra sweetness. Think I’ll go make some now.
