baby, you got it

Posted on Posted in book reviews/events

we took off this weekend for annapolis, MD, where my dear nephew james is marrying his lovely fiancée diana this evening. this is a wonderfully happy opportunity for our whole family to get together—since we are spread fairly far and wide, that doesn’t happen often enough it seems.

anyway, in order to spend the most time possible with them, i thought i would take a few days off from the blog. but not without a treat for you! a book giveaway is in order, yes?

and since labor day is nearly upon us, i have just the thing (and this is in no way a nudge to the newlyweds!)

in the same vein as the wonderful 60 quick knits book, sixth&spring books has brought us another treasure trove of fun projects in cascade 220—this time, for babies in 60 quick baby knits.

this one is a total cute fest for us knitterly suckers—in the best possible way. with all manner of baby projects represented from blankets to sweaters to last minute scene-stealers

this book has it all. and if that wasn’t enough, every project presented is knit up in cascade 220 (or 220 superwash if you will), a perennial favorite among knitters for its nice hand, color range, versatile weight, and the fact that it is very readily available at an economic price.

there is a very decent representation of projects in each category, requiring a range of skill levels and time investment. this is one of the best things about the book—if you are learning to knit, there is something for you.

and if you’ve been knitting for years, but forgot about that baby shower you are attending this weekend, there’s something for you, too (i think this is my favorite thing in the book, hee-hee!). the accessory projects are too adorable—but many are quick knits, you can be sure.

and for planners, there are possibilities galore as well—several more intricate and amusing blankets are included.

which is not to say it’s all about blankets—i would never stop the baby parade there, haha. the book includes a number of really cute sweaters and garment sets.

being the aunt of many more boys than girls, i’m particularly happy about the number of truly handsome sweaters included for little guys

some with sleeves and some without; many with deeply-textured cables.

most are also unisex, if you’d like to knit one for that special little girl in your life. and if you’d like to knit something for a baby whose sex is as yet undetermined, there is plenty to choose from there

for me, the real fun begins with the accessories (i know you know what i mean, haha)

there is a hat to suit any mood you want to strike, from seriously handsome . . .

to traditional to super cute and amusing (see my fave above). feet and hand accessories are not lacking either

there are plenty of items here to use up the last of that project yarn or to make a nice smaller gift.

now here’s the best part—sixth&spring has generously offered to send one lucky reader of today’s review a gift copy of 60 quick baby knits. if you’d like to be in the running to win it, please leave a comment at the end of this post by 9pm EST on sunday, september 4th. we’ll announce the winner as soon as i can after that (we should be home on monday, but you never know!).

have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Oh those patterns are so darling and just right for lil’ darlings! What a treat to be able to knit those! Linda

  2. Those patterns are just so cute! I have two grandchildren that are just turning one this fall and I’d love to knit a few of these for them. Now if the granddaughter would just move back to Virginia from Thailand where she will need some warm knits!

  3. Oh my gosh! Those are totally adorable. I usually find baby patterns a bit too ‘twee’ for my taste, but I love each and every one of those patterns. And I’d totally make that hedgehog blanket for myself. And an officemate is having a boy in October – the vest would be perfect. Must have this book! Thanks for highlighting it.

  4. Wow, I can’t believe that right now I’m the first. Of course by the time I get done typing I might not be. This book would be so perfect for me. One grandson and another grandchild on the way. My daughters are going to keep Nana busy unfortunately one is in Washington state and other currently in Germany and I’m in Nevada. So I get to spoil long distance. The girls have a long list of knitting projects that are needed for the baby and the other coming. My grandson Hudson has your Honeybaby and the expectant baby is getting Rosebuddie. My favorite blankets made with Kim’s yarn. Perfect combination. Thanks for the great patterns and have fun at the wedding.

  5. Some of the ideas look really cute! I would love to be in the running to win the book. I haven’t used Cascade 220 yet but my daughter and her friends are all in the wedding / baby part of their lives and I’m pretty sure they prefer baby items that are washable.

  6. I would love this book! but maybe you should slip it in the wedding gift.
If they don’t know how to knit they could at least pick what they wanted for the future

  7. There are some adorable projects in there! With the younger members of my extended family reaching adulthood (not to mention many of my former students, already starting families!), I will definitely need ideas and patterns for quick but cute gifts. This book appears to be just the thing!

  11. Hope you have a wonderful time with your family, Anne! And thank you for the opportunity to acquire this adorable book!

  12. oh what sweet patterns in that book! I used to pooh-pooh knitting for babies because I am a slow knitter and feared they would out-grow what I had knit in less time than it had taken me to knit the project (hope that sentence makes sense). however with a couple of great-nieces on the scene and a great-nephew soon to arrive, I have discovered how quick baby sized items really are. Would love to be the winner of that book!

  13. boy, i’d regift this immediately to my oldest daughter, who is trying to have her first child, my first grandchild. what a great book, going on my amazon list regardless.

It would be perfect for my little bundle to be (due feb) =)

Anne, I have to say your patterns are amazing. I get comments all the time on how amazing they are. My next project (if baby brain lets me) if fireflies!

  23. This would be perfect–my firefighter nephew and his fiancé are expecting a little girl at the end of October.

  24. A good friend is expecting her first child after years of trying. I’d like to make this pregnancy special for her and knit her up baby items from the book. Thanks for this great give-away!

  33. I have a couple of new babies in my life, would like to try some of these patterns for them. Great pictures and cute patterns.

  34. When I first saw this give-away I was thinking I didn’t know any babies – but I do, and these are all darling. I used to do blankets just to have in a hurry and have stopped, time to start again…..still have plenty of yarn, too, including 220.
Thanks for the opportunity! Enjoy your weekend, hope it cooler there!

  38. I love these patterns. I have two babies to knit for and these patterns are quick and easy. Love the hat.

  39. Anne, thank you for a great review; I’ve added this book to my wishlist for sure (win or lose). My partner and I are in the “dreaming and planning” stage of having our baby, and I am fast-compiling a list of must-knits to get ready. The sheep blanket is definitely going on that list!

  40. This book has been on my wish list for a long time. I especially love the sheep hat (not shown), my sister desperately wants me to upsize it for her 🙂 Thanks for hosting this great give-away.

  41. Celebrating a happy event with your family: that’s the perfect way to spend this long weekend. Enjoy!
So many lovely things in there! The hat with pleats and a bow is adorable. The babies in our family aren’t babies anymore, but I guess little ones should start popping up in our circle of friends sooner or later…

  42. Baby…..Baby…..Oh Baby……………… Pick me! Would love to win it………. a labour of love!

    Lynn

  45. Thanks for reviewing that book. I’m going to head to the store to get it unless I’m lucky enough to win the available copy.

  46. Congratulations to your Nephew. Many blessings in the years ahead. You will be in my neck of the woods. Enjoy the sights if you have time. We are finally just about done with all the clean up from Irene. Power and all. What a cute book! I think it was an old jump rope song… first comes love, then come marriage, then comes ” ” with a baby carriage. 🙂 Safe travels.

  47. I love the blanket with the fuzzy sheep. And what perfect timing, my nieces and nephews will be visiting this weekend with a total of 5 great (or is it grand?) nieces and nephews all under the age of 2! I NEED this book.

  48. My son is obsessed with hedgehogs – that hedge blanket would be a perfect a Christmas gift! I see lots of holiday gift giving potential in this book, in fact.

  49. Happy Labor Day Anne and David! Best wishes to the newlyweds! Thanks, as always for a great give-away.

  50. I love the look of these , especially for me, a knitter who is not advanced. (But I am a wannabe!) The designs have personality and look so fun and quick to do. I am working on a little hoodie now – I would love the variety in this book.

  51. happy labor day weekend! heading off camping ourselves this evening! Another great giveaway! i have started knitting fun baby things and utting them away in a someday gramma box, lol, not that i am giving her any ideas…. yet! (lol, maybe in ten years!)

  52. This would be a great reference book to have on hand when a request for baby stuff comes my way! So cute!!

  53. I am at the age where I have friends popping out adorable babies to knit for left and right. I love it, but could use the variety this book would provide.

  54. I could always use a new book of baby knits! I’m getting to that age where all my friends are having babies… Thanks for having the giveaway!

  55. With all the babies happening around me, I REALLY need this book. Projects look absolutely precious. So sweet of you to have this giveaway. Sign me up please.

  56. These are adorable! I always seem to have a baby shower to go to, and these patterns would do nicely.

  57. My “nesting” instincts have been kicking in and while my grandkids aren’t even married yet I am knitting things for my ‘hope’ chest for these great grandbabies…just finished a Rosebuddie blankie in the same yarn & color that Anne used.

  58. I have and love this book…but wonder if anyone else has had problems with the cascade superwash. I find that it does not hold up well with hard baby and tot use…very disappointing. That said I will keep knitting from these great patterns, just with another yarn

  59. The patterns look adorable! I am always way too tempted by projects that require way too much care for brand new parents. I would love to knit some of the projects for my cousins’ babies!

  60. Wow, what an adorable book of baby things! Love those shoes with the pink flowers. They’re my favorites. But I’ve always had a thing for shoes.

Hope your nephew has a wonderful wedding and a happy marriage, Anne.

  61. 3 co-workers expecting babies between now and February. And I’m only on shawl #8 for 11 in ’11. Yikes! Need this book!

  66. Oh, my gosh! I see about 10 projects I want to do just in this review! Pick me, pick me!

  67. The book looks great! My niece and nephew would be adorable in so many of those things.
    Enjoy the wedding and family!

  68. Talk about inspiration! This book makes me itch to get back to knitting for my little niece, Genevieve Hope. So far I’ve knit Baby G two sweaters and a stocking cap but these blankets and sweaters look divine and very knittable. They’d be fun to knit during all those upcoming television football games. Knitting and footbal games. All part of autumn in my household.

  69. My first grandson was born at 25 weeks gestation seven weeks ago. He is now thriving and I am ready to start knitting for him in earnest. This book looks wonderful. It was good to meet you at Sock Summit.

  70. The book looks wonderful…. I hope I win…this would be a wonderful gift for a knitting friend…..

    A Knitters Notebook

  71. It is definitely a must have book. Quick knits, but so cute. Glad to see those knits for boys. As the aunt of 4 boys, it’s been difficult to find patterns to knit up for them.

  72. This book couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I found out yesterday I will be a grandmother for the 2nd time, I can’t wait.

  73. I love gift knitting, especially for babies. They look adorable in anything which can be very forgiving to a hand knit piece. I would love to add this book to my “last minute baby gift ideas” collection.

  74. Looks like this book is full of super cute baby things! While I have my own tried and true baby favorites, it’s nice to try out some new projects, too – I’d love to add this to my library!

  78. Hi Anne,
Looks like a great book! Your reviews never fail to be thorough and entertaining. Thanks so much for taking the time to hold the give-away, and the chance to win.

  89. So adorable! I’m imagining yarn choices already – I love baby knits. Have a wonderful time at the wedding!

  90. I have grandchild #13 on the way and 9 of them are girls. I would LOVE to own this book. Anne, I love the blogspot and HAD to buy the Leafing sweater pattern from Twist. You design such beautiful things and thankfully, many of them are sized for me, too.

  102. I hope you have a wonderful, safe and blessed weekend trip with your family. F/Y/I — a lot of my lys will no longer be carrying Cascade 220 (regular), as there was a significant price increase, and they all will be carrying a different workhorse yarn — the skeins went from less than $6 to almost $10 retail — a huge jump. Sad; it is a great work-a-holic yarn.

  148. Looks like a great book, and I have a baby project to choose in the new few days. Perfect timing!

  149. This book looks incredible – and I’m expecting another new niece in February. Perfect timing!

  150. That is so dangerously cute. I mean for goodness’s sake! there is a sheep hat in there that even I must have.

  151. I love the projects that you featured. What beautiful blankets – I’ll have to knit at least one!

  152. Such absolutely gorgeous knits. I would be beside myself knitting for my grandbabies if I had this book!! Oh wait. That would make two of me knitting. Even better! Thanks for this opportunity to win!!

We have a family wedding come up next month — hmmmm, if I won this book, I could be (for once) starting to plan ahead?

  165. I just got married a year ago and would love to have a book like this to prepare!!! Happy Labor day and congratulations to the happy couple, may they have a beautiful day on which to celebrate!

  166. It wasn’t until I saw the drawing that I realized how long it’s been since I commented! What an adorable book. With two friends expecting, I’m in dire need of projects I have half a chance of completing in time. 🙂

  167. What a lovely book. I’m expecting and after a first trimester where I seriously lost my knitting mojo, I am now feeling better and looking for cute projects to knit.

  168. This would be great timing — I, too, have a family wedding within the week and my brother informed us that they’re hoping to have children right away, so that means lots of knitting baby-things!

  169. Would love a chance to win this book. Thank-you!
This summer has been all about weddings for this family – my son’s. What great fun it has been with family and friends.

  173. Gorgeous photographs! Those alone get me excited about making a beautiful blanket and hat for my niece’s expected one. Too bad my favorite knit shop isn’t open this Labor Day weekend.

  174. This looks like a great book…just the thing as there are a couple of developing humans in the works that I must knit for!
