kim is my total hero.
i ran out of yarn around 2:45 this morning—which was fine, because i had to stop and go to bed at some point. and not 7 hours later, the mail carrier arrived with another skein in hand.
just look at that match—kim is a wizard.
she even added a little present to the box—a skein of bambino in wood rose and a beautiful hand-sewn project bag.

for anyone who has been wondering or asking—and can i just say how cool it is that you have SO much faith in us, based on two blobs??—yes, indeed, there will be a kit for the Bee Blob Thing (it will have a real name) available through the woolen rabbit shop as soon as we can share all the details (probably mid-september). i believe it will be offered in three colorways: my color (which needs a name!), bodacious blossom (which is the color kim is knitting with), and her new sea dreams colorway.
so yeah—we need to name this colorway here; kim has left it up to me.
unfortunately, i’m not coming up with much; i liked someone’s suggestion that is looks like squash blossoms, but that’s kinda close to kim’s color name
and you are always so helpful with this

leave suggestion in comments (try to avoid links if possible, since that sends your comment into moderation). we’re looking for a fun, cheery, name, related to the color in this photo (such as, if anyone knows a slang phrase for “squash flower”, that might be cool).

in other news, first thing this morning a big truck pulled up outside and ejected several hunky men on our front walk. along with a bobcat.

it’s finally time for us to get new front steps—i thought i’d never see the day.
our steps have lots of character, but they are a hazard, especially with people coming here regularly for class. they are also very difficult to shovel and de-ice, being so uneven. the stoop and walk have been high on my list of things to fix for some time.

it’s been a really interesting journey to this day—we started shopping for estimates about a year ago for this job, making appointments with probably ten to twelve contractors. maybe four of them showed up to get measurements; only two actually gave us estimates and just one was someone we felt very good about.
why do contractors make appointments and not show up? or come to take measurements but send no followup or estimate? it just seems that, aside from wasting my time and putting a bad business card out there, it’s a total waste of their time to come out, look at a job, and not follow up. if they don’t have time, why do they waste it this way?
anyway, we did find someone we like (through a good friend who is a great builder) who is competent and courteous AND who—most importantly—started the job today.

(david has bobcat envy—he was totally glued to the upstairs window while they pulled the old concrete out)
they got all the old stuff pulled out today and the ground leveled (we have problems with tree roots). everything looks like it’s just about set for the concrete to be poured.

it’s been a satisfyingly noisy and productive day. now they’d driven off somewhere and it’s quiet, at least for a while. i think i’ll go make my acquaintance with that new skein of yarn.
after some lunch, that is . . .

Name the skein a “Taste of Honey”
Thanks Gaye
Apricot Nectar
How about Sundrop? Maybe Butter Cream? Or what about Limoncello?
Butter breath….LOL
I’d name it “What’s up, buttercup?”.
But that’s just me
How about “Pooh’s Passion”
How about “Spun Sunshine”?
I vote for Orangina.
Sunny Side Up! 🙂 Congrats on the new sidewalk-in-progress. We need to repair our wooden front steps–it’s always something, isn’t it?
Hahahaaaaaa………Ken has Bobcat envy too! I keep telling him that he must not have had enough time playing in the sand box when he was little.
How about “Bee My Honey”?
Saffron blossoms/Saffron petals?
Hmm…. I like the sound of Spun Sunshine that was already suggested.
You know, I thought you meant a real bobcat for a minute and couldn’t figure out what a crew would use it for!
Spun Sunshine sounds good to me – my summer has been devoid of much of it!
It’s always a good day when there is yarn in the mail!
Calabaza?
I don’t know if you’d run into trademark issues, but it looks like a Creamsicle to me.
I think that in keeping with the bee shawl, the colourway should be Wild Honeysuckle (or just Honeysuckle). Can’t wait to see it all done!
I don’t know about slang terms for squash blossom, but the Greek name is kolokythanthoi (with the accent on the last syllable). I’d call it A drop of sunshine!
What about flor de calabaza (squash blossom in Spanish!)
I just love to say this squash name: Patty Pan. How about Patty Pan Blossom?
On a totally different note, I favor “cheese fondue” as a name for the yellow yarn. I know, it has little to do with squash or blossoms or bees, but it looks like melted cheese blend to me.
What about “courgette blossom”? Another name for zucchini.
Pollen?
Ducky?
Redon Yellow (after Redon’s painting, Woman with a Yellow Bodice)?
Getting away from the garden and into the orchard, I think it is “Perfect Peach”.
Sunmist… or MornShine
I thought limoncello but someone said that already, or lemon smash (British lemonade)
Bee Happy?
Sorbet Swirl?
New steps – so exciting!
SunSmile because it makes me smile just to look at it
Calabaza Amarillo – yellow squash. Beautiful in any language.
Lemon Drop or Butter Creme.
I see someone else had my second suggestion, but I came up with it before clicking to see comments.
Mango banana smoothie?
What, Bee Blob Thing isn’t a real name?
morning sunshine?
sunshine on squash-blossoms?
Lots of great names already, but the color totally reminds me of the old-fashioned, messy kind of double narcissus that my grandmother had in her garden: “butter ‘n’ eggs.” I’ve always loved both the name and the flower.
I always think of squash blossoms in Italian (delicious Roman pizza)…how about fiori di zucca/fior di zucca, or some variation thereof?
How about “Honey Sunrise” for the name of the yarn? It makes me think of the all the beautiful colors of the sun as it rises in the morning. I’m anxious to see the “blob” all done up, you’re such a tease – hehe!!
Also I can’t wait to see your steps all completed. I bet you’ll be so happy.
I must be ready for dessert… it looks like a butterscotch sundae to me! 🙂
The yarn reminds me of Golden Roses.
What lovely yarn. From the first peek at the bee thing, I thought it looked like sunshine, so I’m with the commenter who suggested Spun Sunshine.
I’m sure it’ll be the next colorway I try to get into my stash.
I dont know if, in the USA, you have a sweet/candy called ‘barley sugar’ but some of the colours in the yarn remind me of my favourite childhood sweetie. ,
I think it looks like Squash Sunbeam. The botanical name is Cucurbita pepo. You can see a picture at KingseedsDotCoDotNZ. It’s a seed company in New Zealand.
Patty Pan Petals!
that truly is a gorgeous colorway, but i have no idea what it should be called…
a construction project you don’t have to do yourselves, how fun! i find it surprising you had such a hard time getting estimates, especially in this economy. maybe concrete guys are in high demand, but i’m pretty sure everyone else is dying out there right now…
Lucky you – get to read through all these comments! I thought of two names:
Squashoms
Mellow Yellow
Name? “Like Buttah”, of course!
Soleado – per the Google – Sunny 🙂 (helpfully translated from English to Spanish) I like how it rolls of the tongue – something I think would grab a persons attention to remember later.
Love that Sunshine
Buttercream (icing)
It’s really pretty (and a shade of yellow I could actually wear, I think!)
Yeah her sea dreams colorway…yum, I want! Honestly it’s looking very peachy to me on my monitor, like orange juice, or a Fuzzy Navel drink. 😉
Orange Creamsicle
Bee Mine
Marmalade
Coyote Melon
Well, OK, it’s late;so, maybe these are a bit lame!
New entry will be wonderful…and fun to landscape!
How about Honey Blossom or maybe Dandelion Delight!
It speaks “Apricot Blush” to me.
Oh I think it looks like mango ripple ice-cream. Yum!
Honey Butter to me.
Lemon Delicious?
I like soleado, but I’m a sucker for the spanish names. Calabaza is unfortunate slang in our house, but calabacita is untainted. flor soleada? (maybe not) Sun on steps. Sun on bees. Sun on honey. (time to go to bed) Sun after fog.
Congratulations on almost steps! I love watching machines work, especially in little spaces.
I like all the suggested names but “Ducky” is a fun one and “MornShine” seems very descriptive. I don’t envy you having to choose a name!
On another note, my DH saw your garden pics today. His explanation is that “aliens have landed!” Go figure. LOL
“Like buttah” gets my vote. hello, gaw-jus!
looks like a cocktail to me, therefore Mango Colada. Colada because of the cream coloured bits, if there was more yellow it would be a Mango Daiquiri 🙂 Or if you want something more “exotic” take “Zucchini Blüte” which means squash blossom in German (my native tongue) Actually I really love the name “squash” because it sounds like “squishy” to me, which is a great american word. So what about “Squishy Squashy Mango Blossom”? Now it’s getting silly so I will stop here…
I can’t come up with a better name than any of those already suggested—funny how that color makes everyone think of food! Good luck choosing! Those new steps are going to make such a difference, I bet. We recently had to have our driveway redone (tree root issues) and even though it took an entire week, it was so worth it.
ooh that sea dreams is gorgeous. i vote on “butternut” as a name. can’t wait to see the finished shawl.
What about “Saffron Sunshine”? Beautiful colors!
fiori di zucca sounds so much more evocative! I have a yardful of those things at the moment, though unfortunately, most of them seem to be male pumpkin flowers and far too prickly to eat!
Zabaione it looks like Zabaione!
Well again I can provide some German names.. “Kürbisblüte”, for example, which means just “squash blossom”, or “Wilder Kürbis” (Cucurbita foetidissima, it means “wild squash”), but maybe that’s too much umlaut this time. What about “Bienenstich”? Literally it’s the thing you get when a bee pricks you, but we also have a (very sweet) cake with lots of butter, cream, vanilla-pudding and almonds named like that.
Tequila Sunrise.
It made me think of a Creamsicle, and I see a couple other people already suggested that name. Whatever it ends up being called, it sure is pretty!
It makes me think of saffron or tumeric, which leads to a nice dish of veggie korma. There is just a hint of Post-it note in the yellow though!
I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months now and I have a definite urge to go knit lace…
Nasturtium Bliss? It looks like the whiskey barrel full of nasturtiums that are overflowing in my garden!
How about “Marmalade Squish”?
Sun splash?
Honeybunch?
Buttercup?
I think I like the last… buttercup
I like the Italian version of squash blossom too, “Fiori di Zucca.” Squash blossoms show up a lot on Italian menus in the summertime as part of a fritti misti platter and they’re so delicious!
Summer blonde.
Since all your summer knitting is tied up with your garden, how bout naming the yarn Summer Harvest?
Love all your garden shots. I can garden vicariously through you.
My first thought when I saw that yarn was Butterscotch sundae – it looks like butterscotch sauce dribbled over french vanilla ice cream. If that is not classy enough, it also looks like the ‘Dulce de leche’ caramel/vanilla pudding I’ve been buying my daughter for camp desserts…
Cool Creamsicle
How about Wild Honey or Bee Balm?
OOOHHHH, I LOVE Bee Balm! until I saw Renee’s comment I was thinking totally about Summer Sun or Summer Sunshine, or August Dreams, but Bee Balm says it all for me! It will also go with Kim’s naming scheme because she already has Tupelo Honey for a bee-related color.
I vote for Spun Sunshine or Like Buttah, personally. Also, I don’t know if someone mentioned but the suggestion of Lemoncello coincides with last month’s Super Summer semi-solid Sock Club offering from Yarntini. Since I’m a fairly new knitter, I’m not sure the practice of naming colorways and keeping away from those of other dyers, but I would want to remain unique myself, if it were my colorway. Anyway, good luck!
Heavenly Mellow Yellows!
Anne- Royal Jelly.
Queen Bee.
Honey Bunny.
(lame, I know)
Mango Moon…and I think I know what it is now, thanks to Kim’s picture. 🙂
I am totally obsessed with that kind of yellow at the moment – I can’t get enough of it.
Melissa Citronella – lemon balm in Italian
Fiori di Zucca – squash flowers again in Italian
I was looking all over those pictures for the bobcat…then I realized you didn’t mean a kitty. 🙂
squash (in general) is abobora in portuguese… I don’t know if that helps.
zucchini blossoms for frying are called flor de calabaza.
Daffodils and Hyacinths
Honeyed Blossoms? Sort of the bee theme and the squash blossom?
Honeycomb? Lemon butter?
The latin name for the summer squash plant is cucurbita pepo, so I vote for “Cucurbita!”
Fresh cement, I’m tempted to come over and leave a handprint or footprint, just in case you ever decide to make me mittens or socks!!
I’m going to have to stick with my squash blossom suggestion!
I see other people have had a similar idea, but Fleurs de courgette is Zucchini Blossom in French. It sounds so pretty.
how about Buttered Popcorn?
Ambrosia… that’s what you mentioned a couple of days ago. I think of honey whenever I hear of ambrosia, so I feel it would go well with the bee theme!
Hmmm, I was reading through some name suggestions, and I have to say I really liked the fiori de zucca, or whatever that was. Very elegant sounding, but still meaning “squash blossom”, lol!
You’re right, they do look exactly like that!
The only corny name I could think of was “Nectar”
The color on my monitor is totally Lemon Meringue Pie, but if you really want to go with the squash theme, how about Crookneck?
I’d name the color “Buttercup”.
Filtered Sunlight. That’s what my quilt looked like when I photographed it outside the other day.
Narcissus?
Hi! Very cool to have new, ever so shovel-able steps. I have a path in my back yard made of some kind of cement brick squares and it is murder to shovel since it is not so very level. And then there are the uneven spots that fill with water and get so icy…hard to really think about that just now.
As for the color? Mandarin honey – as in mandarin orange, but more honey-like.
Lots of other cool names in the comments already.
Hmm, I think it looks like corn chowder.
When you encounter squash blossoms while dining in Mexico, they are “flor de calabaza”.
Zest (as in lemon)
Maize (as in corn)
Whatever you call it – it’s lovely!
Oh another thought – Elote! A type of Mexican corn.
Spring Daffodils
or
Mango Lassi
or
Orange Sherbet
