Over the holidays my parents got me, along with Matt, hooked on Downton Abbey. We had never watched an episode and in days we finished Season 1. Holy cow were we missing a lot of fun! Then came the tears because Season 2 wasn’t on Netflix. My parents had all ready watched it, but Matt and I were sunk. ah…but then I found Season 2 on Amazon Prime. We got all caught up in time for Season 3 to start on PBS. Before Season 3 Episode 1 aired in the States, my parents were lucky enough to score tickets to watch it in the theater!

They said it was amazing and they wished they could watch every episode that way. The event was sold out and mom said it was a blast to have a room full of people laugh at the funny parts and gasp at the shocking parts together. I bet.
I am in love with the every bit of the show – the drama, the time period, the English accents, the clothes, the food, the table settings… I could go on.
For Christmas my mom bought us skeins of Lorna’s Laces Sportmate in colorway Christmas at Downton. Could it get any better? I labored until last night about what pattern I wanted to knit. I wanted a small accessory. I wanted a simple yet sophisticated stitch pattern that would look gorgeous in variegated yarn. I decided on Juerga.

This pattern is just adorable! It knits up very fast in sport or DK yarn. Don’t believe me? Look closely.

The mitts don’t have thumbs! They’re just cuffs. Is this not a fun pattern? Couldn’t you see cranking out tons of Juergas as gifts?

The largest size only takes 215 yards for the set. Such an economical gift. I know LOTS of loved ones that would pass out if they got this set. Yep, call the paramedics. I predict a good bump on the head after suddenly finding themselves horizontal from this beautiful handknit.
Christmas at Downton is a gorgeous colorway. I only have four rows of the neckwarmer done, but I know it’s going to be beautiful!

It’s the perfect combination of all my favorite colors. My plan is to keep watching episodes over and over this weekend until the new one airs Sunday night. The anticipation kills me, but I get a kick out of hearing the dialogue of past episodes as I knit. I am always surprised how I missed a funny line the first time around. Plus, I never get any knitting done during a premier episode. I plan on it, but when the credits roll on the screen I realize I’ve just been holding my knitting the whole time. I guess this is why I usually knit to old Law & Order episodes or my fave movie Rear Window.
I’m curious…do any of you watch TV series as you knit? Or movies? Or listen to audio books? Tell me all about it in a blog comment by 11 pm EST on Jan 21. One of you commenters will win a $10 gift certificate to the knitspot pattern shop.

Absolutely I watch TV and listen to audiobooks while I knit. I find it just about impossible to watch TV without knitting – it’s just too boring.
Yep….I love watching movies or a whole season of a particular TV show while knitting. And, I’m a big Downton fan as well
I watch TV or movies while I knit – or I should say I knit while watching TV or movies, because I almost never watch anything with empty hands. Downton Abbey and Castle are my current TV faves. Audiobooks (and podcasts) I usually save for while I’m on the treadmill, to give me an incentive to exercise.
I like watching Jeremy Brett in Sherlock Holmes and David Suchet in
Poirot, they spend a lot of time talking. I don’t watch Inspector Morse, he spends far to long sanding round looking bedraggled and getting Lewis to buy him a pint, don’t get me wrong I love the programme, it’s just not a knitting programme.
Yup, that’s why I started knitting – to feel productive in front of the tv, in the car and in waiting rooms. (Of course, it’s not the only reason I keep going!) I’ve watched several tv series – Bones and Kingdom being my 2 faves so far (other than Downton Abbey).
Yes, I am totally hooked on TV series while knitting. Breaking Bad was so artistically done with high intensity in every episode. I didn’t always like what I was watching but I couldn’t pull away! The Borghias was another series we watched about the papacy in Rome in about the 16th century – very interesting! Downton is a very favorite as was Homeland. We have really enjoyed MI5 (British CIA) series that really kept you on your toes. Then, of course, we enjoy Miss Marple, Poirot and well- Wow! I could go on and on. Always with knitting in hand I think I get everything but there are parts when I must be totally focused on the knitting – they just go so well together! Thanks for asking!
I listen to podcasts while I’m knitting. I’m not a big TV person in general, but I’ll knit while my husband watches.
So funny you chose this. I have been looking at it for some leftovers that need to be knit up. It reminds me of my beloved Sprössling.
I am currently obsessed with Duck Dynasty. It completely cracks me up. And I love the silliness of Psych. Just a slapstick mystery show with loads of 80s references.
Your hat looks marvelous. Makes me want to learn to spin. Maybe someday.

I definitely knit while watching TV. My family knows where I sit and what light needs to stay on. I have a skein of Christmas at Downton and have been pondering what to make with it. You just provided me with a great idea.
I listen to podcasts, but sometimes will watch movies or tv shows on Netflix. This last month I have been listening to the books in the Dresden Files (contemporary fantasy), I watched Jane Eyre, and just noticed that season 2 of Sherlock is on Netflix, so I know what my next entertainment will be.
I have a 9 month old, so I pretty much have to fit knitting in when I can. We don’t have regular TV, but do have a Netflix account. I like to put on documentaries during the day… our son likes them (surprisingly, since they aren’t exactly exciting) and I can knit and do other things while still enjoying them since they don’t require my full attention. I have my degree in history, so we tend to watch a lot of Civil War, WWII, and other historical documentaries.
Definitely, audio books. I love to read so I “read” audiobooks when I knit. Don’t have a TV and prefer to watch movies at the theater.
I usually listen to podcasts and audiobooks while I knit.
Hello: I listened to the complete Outlanders series on audio books (loans from the public library) while knitting. I also watched, well really I was listening, to the Dirty Harry movies, “Are you feeling lucky”. Well maybe if I win this contest!
Since we don’t have TV, I enjoy listening to audio books and podcasts while I knit and spin. I love having someone talk to me, versus listening to my own thoughts over and over again!
I listen to podcasts or audiobooks. I only knit during a movie if I have seen it before so I know when to watch the important parts.
I knit through pretty much every TV show (though for The Walking Dead I prefer garter or stockinette so I can really ‘watch’ it). Like you, I’ve discovered Amazon’s Prime videos, and I think a great series to knit to would be Doctor Who. From the beginning. The very beginning.
I’m a college student without cable or satellite, so I knit to boxed sets of Doctor Who and season two of Downton (only because I don’t have season 1 yet). I also got a lot of knitting done this past week rewatching Merlin on hulu. I have several movies I’ve seen many times that I like to knit to as well, including several Jane Austen movies and Miyazaki (anime) films. The Trouble with Harry is also a well loved favorite. Basically, if I can say the lines along with the characters, it’s prime knitting material.
I too just got hooked on Downtown Abbey! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! My 3 favorite things to do while knitting is watching or listening to knitting podcast, listening to audio books (Outlander series). Or watching Netflix.
I love to knit and watch tv in the evening….if nothing suits me on TV, I watch video podcasts on tv using my apple deal…..
I knit through many sporting events on television as our household seems to always have the sport in season on the screen. I have been taping the Downton Abbey episodes to sneak in when the tv is not otherwise occupied.
All the tv shows I watch keep getting canceled! I like Downton though, and Walking Dead, and Once Upon a Time. Love Juerga, bought it when it was released, still have yet to knit it!
I can only knit during my second viewing of Downton episodes. the first time around I am too busy trying to take it all in. I might hold my knitting, but only knit a stitch or two.
I love my Juerga cowl! It’s a great pattern.
I love knitting while watching tv or movies, definitely. But during tense sequences, particularly if I’m not familiar with the piece (first viewing, say?) and I really like it, I notice I often end up with my hands in my lap. Still entwined in the yarn, but not making any progress. Of course, this happens during tense moments of football games too, at least if my favorite teams are playing. Right now I’m rewatching Gilmore Girls (on Season 5 at the moment) for the umpteenth time.
I watch TV series mainly so I can knit, I think! I’ve watched The Walking Dead, Downton Abbey and other more embarrassing series (all on DVD) while knitting. I tend to listen to audiobooks when driving and cooking, but less while knitting.
I watch movies, TV and listen to audio books all as an excuse to knit. Perfect excuse. And if necessary, I’ll knit when it is quiet!
I like to listen to audiobooks while knitting. I recently finished listening to the last of Louise Penny’s Three Pines mysteries. I had read them all previously, but I loved listening to the audio versions.
I also like to watch re runs. Have you see the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice? If you like Downton (LOVE it!) you will like P&P…
Law & Order (the Original) is also one of my favorites to turn on and knit away while watching/listening to. I love watching Jack McCoy in the courtroom.
Another British series that is a fun watch while knitting is “The House of Eliot”. Sisters who start a dress making shop in 1920’s England.
I’m definitely a fan of watching Law & Order while I knit. There’s not a lot of “blink and you’ll miss it” action, especially in the early episodes.
I always knit when I watch TV, actually, I listen to TV more than I watch it. And I LOVE Downton Abbey.
I always knit when I watch a movie and especially Downton Abbey. More frequently, I listen to audio books and knit which is a perfect combination of story and knitting.
I almost always watch tv as I knit, and particularly love watching series in order as recorded. I will be starting to watch Downton Abbey soon, but lately I’ve been catching up with another I missed, Big Bang Theory
I often watch television while knitting. Sometimes i listen to music but usually watch television. No particular series or show but nothing too absorbing because i’ll forget to knit.
I almost always knit while watching TV, especially when my husband is watching sports. But I have to say I don’t usually knit while watching Downton Abbey, Justified or Homeland. Have to pay attention!!
Like many other commenters, I pretty much always watch TV while knitting. If I’m working on something complicated, I watch Dr. Phil or Letterman or shows like 20/20 because they don’t seem to require my full attention. Watching the Good Wife or a movie, I opt for my most brainless projects.
Yep, I watch tv. Usually with my husband, watching sports. The only other tv I can watch while knitting is hoarders. It helps me use up my stash quicker. Hopefully at least before someone stages an intervention I’ll get a few projects done. 🙂
PS just wanted to say that there is a Downton Abbey group on ravelry that is fun!
Yes, like you, we watch Downton Abbey– over and over… all Downton Abbey all the time since my daughter got the DVD set for Christmas. Like you, we were missing out. And yes, I watched all of Seasons 1 and 2 leading up to Season 3 and then watched them again with my mom! Don’t worry– even though it’s just airing in the US, it’s already aired in the UK and the DVD releases on Amazon at the end of Jan! 😉
I just recently became hooked on Downton as well! One of the stations started from the beginning a couple of weeks ago. I may just have to buy the set though because the weekly anticipation is killing me.
To answer the question though, yes, I do watch tv while knitting. I don’t always watch tv while knitting, but I never watch tv without knitting.
Ha! The only way I finished Lizette was with Season 3 and 4 of Dr. Who. I love knitting to series and did a lot of knitting to Downton Abbey as well as Doc Martin. I just love British series.
I can’t watch a movie or tv show without knitting! LOL I have to have something for my hands to do. I’ve actually found that without knitting in my hands I can’t focus on the story line at all.
Yes, indeed. In fact, I can’t sit in front of the TV without knitting, or I’ll fidget. Being industrious while being entertained at the same time is a great combo.
Absolutely, I knit while watching tv or listening to audio books. I live in Kuwait so the television shows are repeated often which means I get much more knitted the during the second “viewing”. Much more knitting happens while listening to audio books. My favorite time to knit? When knitting friends come over and we chat, knit, sip tea, and support eachother’s knitting. Salam wa sa’aadah
I love watching tv while I knit. Right now I’m really into watching all seasons of The Twilight Zone on Netflix.
Actually I started knitting seriously 30 years ago when my kids were toddlers, and they wanted me to watch Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers with them. It was a nice way to spend time with them and knit at the same time. My projects back then were kids’ sweaters and hats so it was fine with them since they knew I was knitting for them. Even now with my grandson I knit while we watch tv shows and movies he likes. He carries my knitting bag over to the couch to get me over there to join him. I also take my knitting to McDonald’s playroom so I can knit while he climbs on the play structure with the other kids.
I watch TV while I knit, CSI, NCIS, NCIS LA, you get the idea, all of these are DVR’ed and my husband controls the remote, but we watch them together.
I always watch TV when I knit because that way I feel like I am not wasting my time. Works for me!
I love to watch baseball while I knit. I really got into baseball when the SF Giants won the World Series a few years back. With all those extra games at the end of the season, I finished a few sweaters! (One of which was knitspot’s Highlander)
Yep, like others, I almost always knit while I watch TV shows. (Well, I watch them on the computer as we no longer have a TV or cable.) They’re usually just fine with mostly listening to them.
But like you, I can’t knit with a new show that I really love, like Downton Abbey. I want to see every expression along with hearing it.
My 91 year old father lost his vision to macular degeneration a few years ago and now ‘reads’ audio books. That got me started on them, too, and knitting while listening to a book is a favorite activity of mine. I also listen while I exercise in the basement all winter.
I love knitting to Dr Who. And lately it’s been American Horror story. I just love binging on a series while spinning or knitting!
Knitting is actually the only way I can sit still through a whole tv show! But if there’s something I need to pay a bit more attention to, audiobooks are the answer – I’m currently listening to ‘The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,’ and loving it!
Of course I knit to football, but I also kit to Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. In fact, I pretty much knit any time the TV is on…but not lace.
I do knit while watching tv. Usually shows that have a lot of dialog that I don’t need to constantly be looking at the screen to understand.
I do watch TV, but don’t ask me to tell you the plot or storyline!
I’m watching Bones on Netflix and knitting a garter stitch scarf with beads on one edge. A very easy knit and I only have to stop every 7 rows to add a bead so it’s perfect TV knitting. I love Rear Window, as well as North By Northwest, Dial M for Murder, Stranger on a Train, need I go on…
I didn’t know that you could actually watch TV without knitting………..until Downton Abbey: if I would miss a Maggie Smith snarky look, it would be awful! I always “tvo” them so I can watch again “if necessary.”
I knit watching all my favourite TV shows online… plus I catch up on all the BBC classics on Netflix. In the summer I like to knit outside on the patio while listening to audio books. Just don’t ask me to count too many stitches AND follow the plot!
I Love listening to Audiobooks while i knit. The Last One I finished was Aegypt by John Crowley, read by the author himself. A very special treat!
For some reason I have not been able to get interested in Downton Abbey. I don’t know why. I’ve tried…really tried, but to no avail.
Instead, I knit to the news (I like the Fox News Channel) or I listen to audiobooks. I’m on a Vince Flynn craze right now and am going through his books in chronological order for the umpteenth time. They are great adventures…exciting, modern, current. The good guiys always win in the end, though there are a couple of sad moments in one of the books. Oh well, life happens. I’m also starting to get interested in Tom Clancey, meaning I will get a LOT of knitting done in the next few weeks!
I love listening to music while I am knitting – current favourites include JS Bach and Kate Rusby. I cannot have any background noise if it’s complicated lace – I am embarrassed to say that I have to speak the pattern outloud as I go!!
I normally knit while watching TV, but if it is a new series just plain socks, I can’t always follow the story line. NCIS season 10 has just started in the UK so I decided last night after spending my time rewinding that I going to try and not knit – that will be hard.
Here I’m the UK they showed the Swedish version of the Wallander series, based in the books by Henning Mankell. This was after they showed the Kenneth Brannagh BBC version. Both are amazing but one requires more attention than the other! Not being able to speak Swedish I ended up having to find easy-peasy projects (I think the Longjohn Socks were one of them!) just to knit during the show so I could read the subtitles! Fabulous series’, both of them! Also, I can’t watch TV without knitting now, get too restless, anyone else find that?
Right now I’m watching Lost. Its pretty good and you can follow most of it very well by just listening. I’m also watching a Korean drama called protect the boss. My boyfriend loved it and wanted me to watch it. That one is straight plain jane knitting only though, due to the subtitles.
The perfect day for me is knitting and listening to an audio book. I have David Mitchell’s autobiography on at the moment which has been a lot of fun. Next a history of Henry VIII. Really enjoying your posts Erica!
I pretty much always knit while watching tv. Nothing complicated while watching new episodes, but repeats of Bones and NCIS make great “background” entertainment.
Audiobooks and podcasts are the best for knitting, though. Free hands and eyes. Prefect for knitting, spinning, sewing, and when absolutely necessary, housework.
I didn’t used to watch TV – until I started knitting again! So now, I love to watch TV so I can knit! I now watch a lot of TV and of course, I’m knitting, when I’m watching Gray’s Anatomy, Parenthood (season finale coming up), The Good Wife, Downton Abbey, Modern Family (this one, I would miss too many things so I have to put the knitting down). I had also watched Homeland and Mad Men when they are on. Basically, when the TV is on and I’m sitting down, you’ll never find me without my knitting!
I like to knit while watching (or listening on the radio) to baseball. Sometimes I will knit while watching a show, but I get caught up in the show and forget to knit!
I’ve been watching Luther. Great show.
NCIS!
For me, it’s Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. It’s like watching 2 soap operas in the afternoon in the old days!
I knit to anything which is on TV, and always have done …. except things with subtitles! That makes it too complicated, but does mean that we’re missing out on all the great Scandinavian dramas which are on TV here at the moment.
Knitting in front of the TV, I need some mindless shows: deco reality shows would do… I need to be immersed in the story – the not knitting at the same time 🙁 i am a very big fan of Downton. Bought the first two seasons on BluRay even when I had downloaded season 2 on Apple TV. As Sunday night see a lot of recording, I couldn’t record Season 3 on PBS (need to enjoy this by myself, boyfriend doesn’t like) I decided to buy it on Apple TV.. By the way if you like DA, you should watch Call the Midwife: from BBC, its a story about a young midwife nurse who lives and works at a birth house hosted by nuns in the late ’50s in the East End of London. Being French Canadian, I sometimes have difficulty with the accent but its an amazing mini series…
I’m generally not a tv person (gasp!) but sometimes I “watch football” with dh. He gets really into it and tells me if I need to look up and watch the replay. When our favorite team plays, I like to listen to the radio and have the tv on mute so I know what is going on but can look up and watch if I like. I do spin while watching the news every evening. I suppose that counts, too.
Gorgeous pattern – love Juerga! Definitely a classic.
We just discovered Wallender. (the english version) It’s perfect to knit to!
Absolutely I knit while the t.v. is on! Generally it’s when my husband is watching something that I’m not particularly interested in, or a show that I can follow along without needing to watch every second. Recently I discovered Bones on Netflix. That’s a good show to knit to.
I also love Downton Abbey although it usually has my full attention!
My best day ever was the day I discovered listening to audio books while knitting. Reading had taken a huge back seat to my knitting and I was mourning the loss of it. Then one day I discovered that I could “read” an audio book and knit at the same time. A whole new world opened up to me and I have never looked back.
I knit while watching football and Cold Case. I joined the Downton Abby KLA and received the yarn but I am making a cowl instead.
I try to always have an easy project available so I can knit and watch tv (it is also my car riding project). I save this for NCIS, Criminal Minds, and of course, Dowtown Abbey, but only re-runs.
I have the same problem with TV and knitting — if it’s something new the needles only move during commercials! I do knit a lot with TV on but I usually have to find some ‘tv’ knitting. If the pattern is too complicated I miss the program and visa versa.
However, I love to knit to audio books. I think it’s because they are designed only for listening, and I don’t miss facial expressions or scene changes. I listened to Hotel on the corner of Bitter and Sweet and loved it, then listened to Eat, Pray, Love where I found myself laughing out loud alone in public places. (Crazy old lady who knits and laughs in public). Currently listening to Unbroken.
I no longer have a TV but enjoy knitting and listening to things like Hill Street Blues and Law and Order on my computer. When I really want to take a new program in, however, I prefer just to watch. In my view it would be a shame to miss the visuals of Downton Abbey.
I enjoy knitting to football games in the background – I don’t need to watch every play to understand what is happening.
I also prefer to knit to reruns of my favorite shows and movies – I’ve been wanting to watch Downton Abbey from the beginning of Season 1 but it sounds as if my knitting will sit on my lap while I take in the plots and the characters.
Happy Knitting!!
I don’t actually watch much TV at all, especially not in “sit down for the whole show” mode. I do knit during movies … I’ve even taken knitting (plain knitting on a circular needle) to the movie theater. (The person I was with was stunned that I could knit in the dark!)
I’ve never been able to really enjoy audiobooks. I wish I could – so many books to read, so little time! (I can, however, read on my Nook while knitting, which blows the minds of pretty much all my coworkers.)
I have a really hard time knitting in silence – I often knit with some tv I’ve watched before, or tv I don’t really care about (Num3ers anyone?) or audiobooks so that I don’t go mad. If I really need to pay attention to the knitting, I’ll switch to music, but that doesn’t last as long before I get distracted…
I discovered Downton during the “off season” too and fell in love! I knit with TV all the time. Downton on Sundays, The Bachelor on Mondays, Dance Moms on Tuesdays, Nashville on Wednesdays, Glee on Thursdays . . . thank you for the great pattern selection for the Downton yarn, I had been pondering my own skein trying to decide what to make with it! This is perfect!
With one exception, I do watch tv or listen to an audiobook while I knit although the emphasis should be the other way around. If I am watching tv or listening to an audiobook, I also knit.
The exception is lace. I’m just not capable of knitting even easy lace while my mind is on something else – even partially on something else. I knit lace during the day when I’m by myself, the lighting is good, & there’s no distraction.
I listen to television while I knit or spin most every night. I look up enough to see the characters and if I miss something good I can always rewind. Downton Abbey is a rare exception – eyes on screen the whole show!
It’s Downton Abbey for me also! I was very late to the party because I thought it was one of those dull Masterpiece productions that I’m not fond of, but before Christmas I watched the first episode on Amazon Prime and was hooked. Now I have seasons 1 & 2 on DVD, and have preordered Season 3 so I can watch the whole thing when it’s released on Jan. 29! It’s the perfect show to watch while knitting, and I think you may have found the perfect pattern to use with the Downton Abbey colorway.
I do Netflix and when knitting often turn on Law & Order…there are soooo many episodes (doesn’t matter which one) and the characters are all familair so you can just listen. And no commericials with Netflix. I also like documentaries from Ken Burns and others…
I love to watch TV, or better, a DVD (no commercials, and can be paused), while I knit, but it has to be something that I know well enough to half-watch, and mostly listen to. And no subtitles! Old movies, animated movies, Doctor Who … all kinds of things.
I knit and listen to music. Counting stitches and tv for me don’t play nice together!
Another one hooked on Downton – what a treat!! I do knit while watching tv, but with Downton it is a mindless knit something that I do not need to think. But I have found it difficult to knit while watching Downton. Enjoy!!
Yes! I watch TV often when I knit, either PBS or a dvd of some past PBS shows, and sometimes a movie. A few years ago, I broke my arm and could not knit for a month – it turns out that I don’t enjoy watching tv without knitting. And I’m also addicted to Downton!
“Downton” might be one of those love-hate things. You really love it and I really … don’t.
Much success to you with your newest.
I have an hour and a half on the train each way. So I am a big fan of audiobooks with my knitting. I look forward to the commute getting lost in the story and my latest project.
Baseball was made for this! It moves slowly enough they can replay anything of remote interest for me to see what I missed. Our local TV commentators are terrible, so we listen to the much better radio team with the TV broadcast on mute. Having grown up listening to games on the radio, I can see it in my mind’s eye, even while knitting. Plus, there’s more evening light then, so I am far more productive. Spring Training is just around the corner!
Yes, yes, yes to all of them. Downton Abbey, Lark to Candleford, Breckenridge, etc. Great way to use the downtime to do both things at one once. Can’t get more relaxing than these great shows and knitting/spinning on top. Makes for a great evening or weekend.
My hubby is a political junkie and always has the TV tuned to one of the news/politics channels. Knitting is my escape – my way of being able to tune it out.
I like to put on a movie while I knit. If I am knitting while tv is on I just use it for background noise.
I’m an audio book fan. All those hefty tomes I wouldn’t have read before have become a great enjoyment. Most of the readers are quite theatrical and the book is much more of a production not a monotone voice droning on. Right now I am listening to War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk and knitting a Tabata ear warmer. Baseball is about the only thing I watch on TV while I knit.
If I am “sitting I am knitting” rings true for me. I don’t feel I have wasted time I front of TV. I have accomplished something. I always take some plain knitting in round ( hats) to theater also.
I knit to Doctor Who and BBC or PBS Austen movies/miniseries. It’s the best.
Oh yes…knitting and T.V. go hand in hand at my house. I have to say that the needles sit in my lap when Downton is on. I really don’t want to miss a thing. Look up Ballykissangel and Monarch of the Glenn…two wonderful series that work well with and encourage knitting. Big fans of Rear Window at this house, even the kids (big kids).
Books! Audiobooks, if I can. E-books are easier than paper books, though I read and knit more slowly when I’m doing them together.
Mostly I don’t have something else going on, other than not really paying attention to whatever the Kid’s up to (homework, reading, minecraft, legos) or whatever the husband’s up to.
I love having Downton Abbey, Project Runway, the Office (US version) or knitting podcasts playing while I’m knitting. I should have bought the Downton Abbey Lorna’s Laces when I had the chance!
I’m another person in the “if I’m sitting I’m knitting” camp–if I’m watching something new and exciting (new downton abbey episodes!!), I’ll work on something very simple and mindless. Lace/cables is for audiobooks or watching movies or shows I’ve already seen.
I’m always knitting when I watch TV. We watch a lot of sports at our house and get most of my knitting done during those shows. Thanks for the contest.
Of course! But I usually watch the mindless stuff like NCIS or CSI.
Yep if I’m sitting watching tv then I’m usually knitting. I have found that sometimes the show is over and I haven’t knit anything! Thanks for the chance to win!
I’m not good enough at knitting by feel to watch TV or movies while I knit (and I don’t watch a lot of them anyway, so the ones I do are ones I want to pay attention to), but I do sometimes listen to audiobooks and my library seems to have a fairly good selection. I listen to music more often, though.
I too knit while watching old episodes of Law & Order (and other police procedurals — lately I’ve been watching a lot of NCIS). I also listen to audio books while I commute to work on the subway –so that I can knit and “read” at the same time. I do that home too, particularly when I decide I’ve been watching way too much mindless TV.
I forget to knit during really great shows like Downton Abbey so my favorite knitting time in front of the TV consists of sporting events. Basketball–great knitting and baseball was made for knitting. I am pretty much a football fan so not as good for me as far as knitting time.
Being in the legal field for almost 30 years, I knit to Law & Order – all the reruns and all the spin offs.
A ton! I love a good season to knit by- eureka was excellent and warehouse 13, Sherlock is great!
Knitting and watching (listening!) TV is my go to relaxation zone. I am not sure if I watch TV to knit or I knit to watch TV, does not matter. The best is when I exercise, watch TV and knit at the same time!
My favorite thing to watch is Mythbusters while I knit. That and Top Gear. Though I can’t knit lace while watching something.
I also can’t watch anything NEW while knitting. I want to pay attention to it the first time around! That’s why Mythbusters being on Netflix is great, I don’t get tired of watching it and because I’ve seen it all before I don’t miss anything! It’s great!
I am also abig fan of Downton Abbey, and it’s true not much knitting seems to happen when the new episodes are on. My other favorite show is Grim, which doesn’t air again until March :(. I can manage to get quite a bit do e when anything else is on and regularly look forward to mindless tv and rows and rows of knitting!
When I’m alone, I love to knit and watch favorite movies or series like Downton Abbey, Foyles War, etc. (I can watch favorite movies over and over). When my husband and I watch a movie, I usually don’t knit, because if it’s night, we only have a small table lamp turned on (sometimes, though, I use my headlamp, if I’m anxious to finish something I’m knitting).
I watch Dr Who with my g’son and knit because we have seen them all. I am just keeping him company. I just borrowed back my Downton Abbey season 2 from my daughter so I could watch it again and knit. Nothing complicated.
Love Downton Abbey. Most of my knitting is done during tv watching, especially sporting events. I also, love to knit and listen to audio books.
HA! No knitting progress during Downton…love it too much with rich interiors and exteriors to look at details as well as the story/acting….NCIS reruns…always knitting….
I do! I cannot watch TV without knitting. Peering over my glasses, back and forth between knitting (mostly garter stitch or stockinette) and the show, my husband doesn’t know how I can follow the story. Granted, I don’t follow it as well as he does, and occasionally lose a bit when I look down, but as I said in the beginning, I cannot watch TV without knitting. Too fidgety.
Oh, and it can be any show. I usually only watch “for fun” TV, so it’s the knitting can easily be prioritized over the show 🙂
I knit to all 149 episodes of Supernatural that are on Netflix. Knitting and angels just go together!
I’ve knit through all the episodes of Downton Abbey. Love!
And, almost anything else I’m watching.
My husband is a diehard Redwings fan and a sailor. I suffered from mal de mer on his and all boats and hockey put me to sleep (for me, the puck was like the hypnotist’s swinging watch). When we were engaged he said I had to either stop throwing up on his boat or learn to stay awake during an entire Redwings game. That was when I rediscovered knitting. I now “watch” all kinds of sports on T.V. with him while churning out beautiful knitted garments. BTW, he sold his boat after we got married.
I love both knitting and football, so I combine the two during football (Go Steelers!) season, and watch shows like Cops and true crime investigation programs for knitting the rest of the year.
Too much to miss if I knit during Downton. The visuals are so great. Otherwise, yes, always knitting bc I can’t sit still in front of TV without it.
I love true crime investigations, Midsummer Murders and Snooker for knit-nights, but one of my favourites are the re-runs of NCIS they show in Germany on Saturdays now: three episodes in a row equal a lot of rows in knitting. THat said I wish everybody a nice weekend, because in less than 30 minutes Multnomah and me have a date with Leroy, Abby and Ducky… and I have to take care of my tea and some cookies before that 😉
Always knitting when I watch TV.Love Downton Abbey, old movies & Bomb Girls.Good choice of pattern for that yarn. They will look very elegant .
All of the above and podcasts too. There is only one show I watch that I don’t knit while watching. I have different levels of projects around so I can pick up whatever suits my mode of entertainment that night. Sometimes this is the other way around and I choose the type of entertainment to match the knitting. Moderate to complicated lace knitting can only be combined with audio books or podcasts.
I am almost always watching TV while I knit. Besides Downton (which I love), I have been watching a lot of West Wing lately because it was recently added to Netflix.
My husband and I have been working our way through lots of TV series in the evenings while I knit. Most recently, we have been watching Heroes on netflix. Before that, House. We also do watch Downton Abbey. If you like that, you may like Call the Midwife and Sherlock, also on PBS.
I knit to baseball and often with audiobooks, unless it’s tricky lace or something I need to attend to closely. But not during Downton! I don’t want to miss a single visual there!
I knit watching knitting video podcasts or TV, e.g. Downton Abbey, Project Runway, Top Chef, SYTYCD (although to enjoy this one I have to stop knitting when they dance, but during the rest of it I can knit), House Hunters, etc. I haven’t been reading as much as I used to since I got back into knitting, so I’m thinking of trying audio books.
OK…Don’t laugh…but I knit to old episodes of Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and The Virginian. Love old western series and can knit and watch (listen) at the same time. And, oh, my favorite, Patriots football.
I don’t think I ever “watch” tv anymore. I only listen. My motto is “if I’m sitting, I’m knitting.” I have been knitting and listening to tv shows for a very long time but watching. . .not really! Tv noise is the perfect background for knitting.
I love Downton Abbey and will go back and re-watch many times, great time to knit. I do love to knit during Project Runway and Top Chef. I can knit and listen during most of the show, but do usually stop and watch the judging parts.
I too am a new convert to Downton Abbey. I did a marathon viewing of Season 1 and 2 in the two days before the Season 3 premiere. One of my favorite shows to watch while knitting is Doctor Who, the other is NCIS. I have seen both so many times that I don’t need to watch, and I find them comforting, kind of like knitting.
I listen to books on tape (the Cat Who series is good: entertaining but not so compelling that I stop knitting) or “watch” movies (the Jane Austen novels, Something’s Gotta Give).
I knit and “listen” to T.V. and to audio books. Audio books are less visually, but often more mentally, distracting. I’ve been watching Downton Abbey with my 6th grade daughter. We’re addicted and trying to answer all her questions keeps my on toes.
I absolutely knit with the TV and movies on! I generally have something mindless on the go for it – rounds of plain stocking stitch on bodies or sleeves, a garter blanket, or ribbing – unless it’s something the boys have picked out in which case the more I have to pay attention to my knitting the better. Right now I’m on a leisurely wander through Northern Exposure. Since I’m in New Zealand there is a lot that my partner and flatmate don’t get about it, but I’m filling them in on it and not doing a marathon so they don’t revolt. Just like you, new NCIS and Criminal Minds starting up down here means lots of holding the knitting and not doing any stitching!
If i’m not knitting while watching TV, it’s only because I’m reading knitting blogs or browsing Ravelry on my tablet while watching tv!
I usually knit to the TV, shows, sports anything. I sometimes knit to podcasts but I get distracted listening. For some reason, TV doesn’t bother my knitting.
I always have something on while knitting. I need background noise.
Lately, I have been into knitting video podcasts, I feel like I am knitting with friends.
Two series that I loved in the past was the McLeod Daughters (set in Australia on a sheep farm) and Monarch on the Glen. One of the writers/producers/directors (cannot remember which) of Downton Abbey had a role on Monarch on the Glen. I believe both of these series are still available through Netflx. You have to try them out, you will be addicted to both of them and want to watch all of the seasons.
I don’t watch tv much so when I do it’s usually something I want to pay attention to. I listen to audiobooks while knitting, mostly from audible, sometimes from the public library. Some that I love to listen to again and again are pride and prejudice, 39 steps, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, the Stieg Larson trilogy, everything narrated by Neil Gaiman, and the Falco books
Downton Abbey, Bones, well, just about everything I watch I knit while watching it. In the daytime I read while I knit when there’s nothing on TV.
Knit knit knit- but usually in brit mysterys and Downton, no lace! Tomorrow will be tough because of football- probably will need to watch episode 2 online later.
I always knit when watching TV, unless I am crocheting or doing cross stitch/embroidery. If I try to watch TV without doing something I get very antsy.
I’m in a mystery KAL elsewhere online and our yarn is this Christmas at Downton yarn and the project is Downton related. However, almost no actual knitting of it gets done here during the episodes! I have to watch every second of the show because I am mesmerized by it and do not want to miss ANYthing! I’ve been knitting during the week and watching on Sunday night =-) I love to knit to episodes of Foyle’s War, but that, too, often takes my attention cuz the details are great. The best knitting time is during my soap opera and recorded Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert episodes because I don’t have to watch every second and can actually look at my project=-)
How funny! I just became a Downton Abbey fan, too! I have been waiting for months for it to start. However, unlike you I haven’t watched the first two seasons. Have a lot of catching up to do. My husband and I are Upstairs Downstairs fans, so this is just more of the same wonderful English ‘theater’.
I generally knit to NCIS or Law & Order SUV reruns. This way I can listen and knit.
Funny, how so many of us have similar habits. Great minds…..
I enjoy listening to audio books when knitting, especially if the project requires more concentration. But I’ve got a garter stitch shawl project that’s just perfect for knitting along with Downton Abbey episodes. Like you, I was a little late to the party but now I’m hooked.
I love British murder mysteries: Morse, Midsomer Mysteries, Single-Handed (Irish), Taggart (I don’t care how old), Prime Suspect. I’ve seen these so many times that I have the dialogue memorized and the plots so knitting is relatively easy to these shows….
I love to watch movie series too. Favorites include the recent “Little Dorrit,” all things Elizabeth Gaskell (Cranford, Wives and Daughters, North and South). And knitting keeps me company when things get scary with Bleak House and productions like that.
Love to watch downton abbey and also Emma playing on the Knowledge network both great series to watch and knit to’s. But my all time favoutite to knit with is Hockey Night in Canada! Tonight is watch the Canucks and work on the Roger socks!
I like to knit while watching TV shows that I have already seen. I also like to knit while watching movies that I think are going to be really sad–that way I don’t get quite as involved in the story.
I always knit while watching movies at home (and sometimes in the theater if I have a simple project). I don’t watch much TV but am addicted to Downton. i usually have a project that I can knit on without looking at it (no lace charts!) that stays by my TV chair. I taught myself to knit while not looking at my hands while in college so I could knit and study at the same time.
Yes! I knit while watching tv! Person of interest, Fringe, the killing, Downton – you name it I watch it – tonight I knit a baby sleeve while watching Selfridge with dh and no.2.son – I don’t mind the endless football with three males in house = lots of knitting!
I LOVE to listen to audio books while knitting. I am having a bit of a science fiction/fantasy obsession right now. What a combination! Nothing like dragons, witches, and magic to go with a nice lace shawl pattern.
If I’m watching tv, then I’m knitting. The knitting makes me feel like I’m being productive while letting my brain turn to mush. My fav shows are CSI (Las Vegas), Big Bang Theory, and Modern Family. From Netflix, I’ve been watching The Wire, an old series, but a good one. For Podcasts, I find The Moth, Freakonomics, and NPR’s Science Friday are fascinating.
Knitting is the best way to watch television. I knit to anything I watch. Depends on the show as to whether it is easy or complicated. I love Downton Abbey.
I agree that it has to be something I’ve seen for me to make much headway! I am not good at knitting while looking at something else. Not even plain stockinet the!
We just finished season 1 of Downton Abbey! LOVE it!!
i have always watched something while knitting – TV or movies on video. lately, though, i have been into watching TV series, either on DVD or online. i love the older series, like the gilmore girls, that had many seasons of shows, so i can just immerse myself for the whole weekend.
Like you, I used to sit down to watch Downton Abbey (or Inspector Lewis) with my knitting in hand, but now I’ve given up and just have a cup of tea in hand as no knitting ever got done. I’m also addicted now to Call the Midwife, and can’t wait for Season 2.
I’m kind of a nerd and like watching How the Earth was Made or any type of history shows like that.
I’m pretty much the same way. I plan on easy stockinette knitting when I watch something new, but always end up just holding the needles until the end credits. No worries, I can always watch the episode again and knit the second time around. Hearing the events play out again is somewhat comforting because you already know what is going to happen next. Yet it is still satisfying to do so while actually knitting is progressing in your hands. I’m probably going to be better off with an audiobook that way.
Thanks for the opportunity to win the certificate!
Rav ID: kellknit
I’m always doing two things at once…watching movies/TV shows, talking on the phone etc while knitting. Sometimes I have to TINK to where I started, but that’s another story…LOL.
I can only knit if I’m not that interested in what I’m watching. With Downton Abbey, I am glued to the screen. Like you, I had to catch up in advance of Season 3. It was a marathon to finish but I’ve loved every minute.
Law & Order is my go-to show for when I want something on the TV, but nothing that will distract me from my knitting. Glad to know I’m not the only one! 🙂
I have always had something for my hands to do when I watch TV. It was embroidery, or needlepoint or hand quilting, and now 99% knitting. The complexity of the knitting is based on the show or movie. Repeats of Northern Exposure, MASH, Twilight Zone, movie repeats, and most sporting events rate a complicated pattern.New shows, Project Runway, new movies, etc. all rate simple socks or gloves or scarves. Thanks for the great contest.
I have spent the last several months knitting while watching all seven seasons of The West Wing. And I’m also another Law & Order knitter.
I do like to knit while watching TV and listening to audio books. I am still in Season 2 of Downton Abbey, and it is a wonderful series. I like all kinds of audio books, and listen to NPR and knitting podcasts as well.
I love to knit to law and order too, but west wing on amazon prime is my favorite- until baseball season!
I like to watch knitting video podcasts as I knit. There’s a lot of chatter, so I don’t have to watch the screen constantly, and can just take visual breaks to check my knitting as I need to. Love Downton Abbey and glad you are enjoying it too!
I knit mostly while watching tv. I can’t really watch tv without my knitting!
I can’t watch tv without knitting! I’ve been watching downtown and a series called “wild at heart” – set in Africa and lots of animals! Before that, I watched Rosenary and Thyme – a fun British mystery show
I love knitting whilst I watch TV and I too am a Downton addict. Been lucky enough my inlaws live in Scotland I got given the 3rd series on dvd for Christmas. My daughter got back at New year from London and brought me back the Christmas 2013 Downton edition on DVD that had just aired that Christmas. Wow!!!!!!! You are in for a real treat!!
Must admit I too slow down when I’m knitting when watching Downton! 🙁
My kids seem determined to watch every episode of “How I Met Your Mother” about 5 times each. Therefore, I knit while watching “How I Met Your Mother.” A new pattern to do it to would be excellent compensation.
I often watch knit while watching TV or movies at home. Movies new to me or TV shows with new episodes may lead to more of me holding the knitting rather than making progress. When my DH wants to watch a movie with lots of fight scenes, I do get alot of knitting done then. I don’t want to watch fights so, I keep my eyes focused on the knitting rather than the screen.
I’m totally sucked into DA along with Breaking Bad, kitchen nightmares, and the walking dead.
I, too, knit my way through the first two seasons on Amazon Prime recently (luckily I’ve learned how to knit without looking, though I have to choose projects carefully) in preparation for season 3. I love it! I put my iPad on a music stand next to my knitting chair and was glued to my seat for 3-4 episodes in a row over a few weekends.
My daughter got me hooked on Downton Abbey. I bought Christmas at Downton to do the KAL at Jimmy Beans. When I knit I love to watch TV or listen to audio books.
I always knit with the tv on in the background……My favorite show to knit too is Survivor…I’m a reality TV junkie..lol….I have to watch Downtown Abby…everyone is talking about it……..
My favorite knitting accompaniments are audiobooks. Usually I listen to fantasy novels or historical fiction, and I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. I compete in Ravelry’s Nerd Wars on Team UU, so listening to Discworld audiobooks and knitting makes a perfect combination.
If it’s a simple garter stitch or stockinette project, I’ll watch a bit of television, especially if the PBS Mystery! series happens to feature Wallender or Inspector Lewis episodes.
I can’t knit and watch Downton either. I get sucked in and can’t knit a stitch. Love the show.
I am quite sure that Netflix was invented by a knitter. I knit allot of socks, and I remember them by what I was watching while I knit them—right now I’m knitting a pair designed by Hunter Hammerson and watching “West Wing.” I love to que up a long-running series when I start a project.
My favorite things to watch while knitting are football games, you can get a lot done between plays, or PBS shows. Otherwise, I read while knitting and DH has his action movies.
I often knit while “watching” TV. More frequently this leads to just listening so if it’s something I really want to watch I try to have a simple project to work on. Audiobooks would probably be a better choice but haven’t tried that yet. It really feels like a luxury to watch TV without at least TRYING to knit. I think many knitters probably feel this way – the ultimate multi-taskers!
What don’t I watch while knitting? Favorites in my house include: American Idol, True Blood, Hell on Wheels, Homeland, The Killing, Shameless, Nurse Jackie, Glee, Smash, 60 Minutes, and of course football and golf if DH has the clicker.
I prefer to knit and listen to an audio book when I’m at home and have to concentrate. But a nice series is the next best if I don’t need the high concentration. Thanks for the contest. That is a beautiful pattern and a great gift idea. I am looking forward to purchasing and knitting with knitspot yarn.
I like watching PBS series like “Call the Midwife” and “Downton Abbey” and reruns of the other Masterpiece Theatre productions but can’t seem to knit very well if it’s suspenseful!
I almost always knit while I watch TV. There’s a definite relationship to the amount of knitting I get done and how absorbed I get in the show!
I always watch TV while knitting at home in the evenings. Usually my favourite thing – socks.
I feel unproductive if I am just sitting on the couch watching TV. Complicated knitting goes well with TV sport. Here is Australia at the moment we have the Australian open tennis on. Goes great with knitting. Aussie rules footy is also good (as is cricket). New TV stuff I need to knit simple things like stocking stitch.
Yay! Another contest!
Generally I listen to audiobooks while knitting. I try not to knit while I watch Downton Abbey so that I don’t miss any of the sets or costumes.
I LOVE watching TV and knitting – – can’t do the audiobooks because I find I’m captured by the story line and lose my place easily!
I have a very dear friend WHO READS AND KNITS – – and does beautiful work!
(I LOVE Downton Abbey!!!) – –
So glad to hear there is another Downton Abbey addict out there now! The theatre sounds like an awesome way to watch it… so jealous.
I enjoy listening to hockey games on the television while my husband watches them. Now that the season has started up again I look forward to some quality time together!
I also has recently begun to listen to audiobooks while knitting. How fun to get two things done at the same time!
Hubby and I listen to audiobooks downloaded from our local library. We love mysteries. Lots of knitting spend whiles listening.
The idea of mitts being cuffs is wonderful.
Your are striking, especially with the cowl!
This pattern will be added to my iPad!
Hugs
Oh, yes! i’m a Downtown Abbey fan
I listen to audio books constantly…while I knit, crochet, spin…cook, clean house. Fortunately for my pocketbook our library has a wealth of audio books.
BTW, if you haven’t located a source for season 3 don’t forget to check your local library for Downton Abbey dvd’s. I’ve viewed all 3 seasons thanks to my local library.
I watch TV to knit!
I watch previously seen TV series too – Star Trek TNG, DS9, and Downton Abbey at least twice so far!!
Baseball games and listening to music gets a lot of knitting done around here.
I watch tv shows when knitting but not ncis since I want to pay attention to those shows.
DUH DUM. That sound always gives me the “permission” to knit away for a long while, especially on marathon “Law and Order SVU Tuesdays”. I have so many old fav movies that I can knit to, that it’s almost embarrassing!! But I am thoroughly enjoying Downton Abbey, so much so that I have watched the seasons several times while knitting away! Great blog majordomo!
With my earphones on I watch NCIS DVDs on my computer while I knit. It is not as comfortable as sitting on the sofa in the living room, but there are less distractions. I can always go back if I think I missed some of the action.
That set looks absolutely perfect on you. I have to think of someone just as lovely for whom I could make a set.
Oh, I’m so glad I’m not the only one who gets so into Downton Abbey that I forget to knit!!
And I know what you mean about catching dialogue the second time you watch it. I spent 8 hours at my son’s chess tournament yesterday, so I took a bunch of knitting and my iPad with me. The venue had wifi, so I re-watched the first two episodes of this season while I knit a sweater for my daughter. (I have no idea how I would have survived If I wasn’t a knitter!!)
After getting hooked on DA last winter, I checked out the Masterpiece Sherlock series this summer and got hooked on that, too. I also love Doc Martin, another great PBS series.
I’m also a big fan of audiobooks. A few years ago, I got on a classics kick and listened to the complete works of Jane Austen, as well as some Dickens and Shakespeare. I wish I could have listened while knitting in school; I probably would have appreciated them much more back then!
I knit watching the nightly talk shows that my husband records and watches later. Letterman, Leno, the daily show
NCIS for me!
Love to look up and see Mark Harmon’s smile.
We like to catch up on episodes of Dr. Who while I knit. Between the help I get from the two Boston Terriers “sitting” beside me and the concentration it takes for me to read even the simplest chart, I often look up from my knitting in time to see London destroyed…again. 🙂
I’m a Law and Order fan too plus NCIS, Dr. Quinn, and movies. Over the holidays there was an old Matlock marathon during which I got lots of knitting done.
I “watch” TV or movies as I knit very often! I like that when I pick the project back up, I can reminisce about what I was watching when I last worked on the project. The only thing is–I need to knit mindless projects during hockey games!
Yep. Love to watch movies while knitting. Old movies, new movies from the library, the occasional Red Box. On the rare occasion we do go to the movies, I usually take something, but don’t get much done due to the lighting.
I prefer watching movies at home, with lights, and closed captioning. And somehow I typically still get a lot of knitting done!
I’m such a visual person, I have a hard time with audio books (hence the closed captioning preferred on movies….).
On Christmas holidays I’ve seen Season 1 of Downton Abbey, knitting on the Nightingale Wing – and fell in love with both :).
My husband and I love to work our way through a favorite series from the beginning, once it’s got upwards in seasons on tv. Right now we’re watching old episodes of Psych. It’s so funny and since I’ve seen them before I don’t worry about missing something big. We also re-watch Firefly or I am working my way through Dawson’s Creek… that’s my biggest guilty pleasure!
I knit to old familiar movies. Sometimes I’ll knit to new shows and realizes haven’t watched any of it. Thankfully I have a DVR, and catch up on my shows later.
I always knit while watching TV series, however, stop when something very exciting takes place, so I can really focus on what is happening! Then, it’s back to my knitting.
I knit A LOT with the television on, and I am often rewatching series I have seen before (Lord Of The Rings, Pride & Prejudice-1995, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones). If it’s not a series, it’s period drama, anything on PBS, cooking shows on Food Network, or real estate or remodeling shows on HGTV. (sheesh, it sounds like I am glued to the tv! LOL) I dont do well with audio books, except for the books on CraftLit, but do great with podcasts (faves: Wait Wait Dont Tell Me, The Moth, This American Life, or any knitting podcast).
My guy and kiddo think I’m nuts when they find me watching the same stuff over and over again, but I tell them it’s like knitting with old friends!
I rarely watch TV or a movie without knitting. Last night, it was Downton Abbey. Afterwards it was the Blackhawks game. The only time I don’t knit is if it’s such an intense program that my palms get too sweaty!
Yes. Knit with the tele on. I’ve watched all sorts of things. TV series mostly. The House of Eliott. QI. Jonathan Creek. Bob and Rose. Jeeves & Wooster (there’s a bit of a theme here). House M.D. Lately though, I’ve been watching knitting podcasts. Love them!
Hah! I usually knit with an old sci-fi series going or to my husband playing video games on the XBOX 🙂
After I get home from work, I knit while watching NCIS and Law and Order. Later, I am still knitting but watching Frasier.
I know what you mean about knitting to tv — my best tv knitting is baseball. It’s like listening on the radio, but you get to see the great plays on the instant replay. Plus I am spending time with my husband. Need to find an equivalent winter show….
If I’m home and watching tv I’m always knitting. I too love Downton Abbey.
If I am watching t.v. chances are I am knitting. I usually watch Law and Order: SVU and Syfy marathons.
My husband and I watch a lot of tv and movies, and I ALWAYS knit while I watch. I have to actually be very intentional about taking some time to put my knitting down and cuddle with him so it’s actually kind of together time. Sometimes I actually get really into this episode or that of something, but after maybe a season of a show, I start to realize that I’ve “watched” almost entire episodes without looking up from my knitting! I think the only movie in the last year that actually got my full attention at home was Thor. That was excellent. I’ve been meaning to start Downton Abbey for months now, too. I’ll have to put next on my “tv to watch while DH isn’t here” list.
Downton Abbey, NCIS, Castle, Top Chef – all are good TV/knitting shows. We always watch them recorded on Tivo so if I find I have missed some crucial development, it is easy to rewind and catch it again.
Movies I have knit to lately: Mrs. Henderson Presents (with Judi Dench) and the old French Chef episodes with Julia Child. She was a hoot!
I watch TV, movies AND listen to audio books while knitting (not all at the same time!).
I love old movies, and new movies (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is my latest favourite to knit to). And listening to audio books while knitting is the best way to work through the old classics (Bleak House by Charles Dickens is currently in the CD player).
And yes, I too watch Downton Abbey while knitting and admiring all the wonderful details of the costumes and scenery (I’m English, so the accents don’t fascinate me so much!).
I love to knit while listening to old movies or television series. Thank goodness for Netflix and audiobooks from my local library. It makes you feel like you are multi-tasking when you can knit and listen to something enjoyable.
I usually listen to podcasts or video casts or If I’M caught up I will listen to books on tape. I listen to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every year.
Knitting time for me is at night while my husband and I watch tv. I have some knitting that I can’t do while watching subtitles, but mostly it is okay. We are watching older seasons of Eureka right now interspersed with Life on Mars.
And yes we are big Doctor Who fans. My knitting should be better now that Fringe is over because you really have to watch that show closely.
I watch anything & everything while knitting. With my friend TIVO, I can rerun anything I have a question about. I do love to listen to audiobooks & knit while in the car. Just when riding though. I can’t seem to master the other.
I love to knit while I listen to audio books. I’ve “read” lots of books that way. I used to knit while watching TV, but the patterns I’ve been trying lately are more complicated and I get too frustrated with trying to keep my eyes in two places. Listening is great.
I am glad you are loving Downton Abbey, too! I just watched episode 3 of season 3 last night while knitting my Rockefeller shawl. I love to watch movies or listen to podcasts and audiobooks while knitting. My favorite podcasts are: Craftlit, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Stuff You Should Know, Backstory with the American History Guys, and Freakonomics radio. If you are looking for something fun to listen to while knitting, you might want to check them out.
Enjoy your new yarn! 🙂
