Vintage Knitspot – Stocking Cap for All Sizes

Posted on Posted in projects

Ever since we found out last week Baby Knitspot is a boy, I’ve had the urge to buy little man clothing. I’ve also had the urge to cast on something new and quick. Fall will be here before we know it, so I thought a nice wooly baby hat would be a perfect knit. Off to the knitspot archives!

I came across Stocking Cap for All Sizes.

Another great design with a multitude of sizes – 18 to be specific! And..a worksheet for determining hat size, gauge, and cast on number. That Anne, always there with helpful tools!

I labored over what stash yarn to use (yes, baby knitspot has his own plastic tote full of appropriate baby yarn). The pattern is written for DK, worsted, and chunky so I had a lot to choose from. His tote has so many lovely yarns. I was having a hard time deciding and then it hit me! I could use handspun. Just as Anne did in the model for the pattern.

I spun 9 oz. of Briar Rose Polwarth during Tour de Fleece 2011. It was such a lovely fiber to work with and the colors were fantastic. It was my second handspun off of the beautiful Ashford Traveller I bought from Anne. I ended up knitting a cowl with my yield and had this bit left over…

Magically enough for a baby hat!

After doing the worksheet that came with the pattern, I swatched on a US #7.

I really liked the density of the fabric, so I went with this gauge and plugged my info into the worksheet. This gave me the cast on number and off I went!

I love knitting with handspun and watching all the colors come alive. There are lots of shades of blue and green and just a hint of eggplant. Just neutral enough for a baby boy.

I’ll probably finish this tonight. Don’t you just love knitting wee things?! But as I’m knitting I keep thinking I should have one to match baby. We’ll see how much leftover I have. Maybe I could get my brim done and find an appropriate coordinating yarn.

As you’re all reading this, I’m envisioning some of you with crossed fingers that a contest will pop up at the end of this post. Well, your wish has been granted! Leave a comment by Tuesday 9 pm EST and one lucky winner will receive a $10 Knitspot gift certificate!

Before I get back to my knitting, I have an update for all of you. Baby Knitspot will arrive in about 6.5 weeks and now he’s the size of a pineapple!

  1. Thanks so much for this awesome contest- of course I would like a gift certificate! And congrats on the pineapple…or, you know, whatever else you call him.

  2. Love those colors for a boy, the eggplant is just the right compliment to those blues and greens. Can’t wait to see the finished project on baby knitspot!

  3. Congrats on finding out Baby Knitspot is a little boy…he is going to be one very well dressed little boy! Have fun knitting for him. Thanks for having a giveaway while you knit!

  4. I am also knittting for a friend who is having a baby in about 12 weeks!! The hat looks like a good option!!

  5. Such pretty yarn! Can’t wait to see it finished! It would take me a month to knit that hat lol. I need a magic potion to make me faster. Ha

  6. Hope it is cool for you where you are! Can’t imagine being pregnant in this heat! My second was born the end of March (many years ago) and I spent many of the winter nights prior to his birth sitting on the dark porch in my nightgown trying to cool off.

  7. Oooooh love the colors in that yarn! Nothing better than knitting with handspun either.

  8. Thanks for the update on the baby – glad things are going well! Very cute hat.

    Thanks for the contest!

  9. Yikes! Our baby is due in about 7 weeks and I really haven’t knit much for him at all! I feel terrible about it but I’ve really turned out a lot of socks for myself this summer and am hoping to get a sweater done as well. So long as the mama is warm, right? Thanks for the contest!

  10. Congratulations on Baby K being a boy! How exciting to make little guy things. Love the yarn…will make the perfect hat. Post it somewhere, please? And after he is born we would love to see him sometime wearing this hat (but not while it’s still this hot!). Hope you are able to stay cool somehow.

  11. This is a beautiful colorway for a baby boy! I have only recently realized how great Anne’s patterns are–can’t wait to try more of them! and, it goes w/o saying, I love a contest! Jo

  12. That’s going to be one cute baby hat, and how sweet that it’s handspun and handknit by mom!

  13. Happy Baby! Lovely handspun. (Why does mine never look like that?!) $10 would be great– I just realized tonight that I *need* the Maplewing pattern and don’t have it yet.

  14. I bet you don’t want him to get too much bigger than an pineapple (I love how this baby has been compared to fruit and veggies as he grows). You little hat is so cute. I love the handspun. A $10 voucher would be wonderful so i can buy some cool patterns.

  15. Is that a Pineapple with the greens on top or without? Seems like that would make a big difference. Also, I hope he’s less spike-y.

  16. I love this post both as a doula & spinner! I was just looking @ Briar Rose Polwarth myself to spin for TDF. I ran out of fiber…ugh. And a KS pattern to top it off would be perfect.

  17. Boy, Baby Knitspot has grown a lot since Wooster! Looks like Mommy Knitspot is doing good, too! Love the handspun hat!

  18. I’ve seen the stocking cap in the online store, and wondered what it was like. Thanks for the review and details.

  19. Can’t wait for Baby Knitspot’s arrival! Hard to believe he’s as big as a pineapple!

  20. Lots of love to the baby-boy. May he grow up to know that being wrapped in knitting means being wrapped up in love

  21. Knitting for a baby is such fun! Enjoy! A gift certificate would be used to purchase the pattern for the new sweater Anne is working on!

  22. Love the handspun! Can’t believe we’re already thinking about Autumn but you’re right.FIFC will be here soon. Here in England we haven’t even had a summer and it’s raining again today!

  23. It’s neat to really visualize the baby’s size! Yes, knitting for little ones is so nice and speedy.

  24. Your handspun is just lovely, I particularly like the colorway. And let’s just hope that baby knitspot doesn’t have anything green growing out of his head. 🙂

  25. Awwwww…..so sweet that your new little one already has a stash to call his own. Can’t wait to see the hat not to mention your new little fella!

  26. What fun to knit for your baby. I remember the pleasure in knitting for my son when he was small. Your handspun is beautiful.

  27. Your hand spun is gorgeous; Baby Knitspot will look smashing in it. You made me laugh with B.K. having his own yarn stash!

  28. I think you may have over-estimated the size of that pineapple! The handspun that you have there is a great mix of colours. I’m always happy to see people who don’t want to stick rigidly to the blue for boys, pink for girls formula.

Thanks for the chance to win. I can’t wait to see your hat with the contrast section – sounds great!

  29. Oh Erica, I love all your baby size comparisons with fruit! The yarn you are using for the baby hat is just perfect for boy. He’s going to be the best dressed baby in knitted garments around!

  30. Congratulations on your healthy pregnancy, Erica! Please put my name in the hat for the Knitspot drawing — that stocking cap pattern would be the perfect stashbuster for me!!

  31. Congratulations on your healthy baby boy!

Anne’s patterns are my favorites, so would love to win the gift certificate. Thank you…

  32. Hello and Congrats! I love the comparison to the different veggies. The hand spun is gorgeous. I just purchased some handspun from etsy to use in my knitting (I don’t have time to take up spinning right now). This will be the first time I’m working with it. It’s extra special to make a hat that you’ve spun and knitting yourself. Thank you for the great post.

  33. That is one healthy-looking pineapple! I love your choice for the hat, Baby K will be so well-dressed!

  34. The hat is darling! Beautiful handspun hat for a beautiful baby boy! Best wishes!

  35. I love Anne’s patterns and have most of the them for wee ones. Expecting my first great-grandchild in October so knitting for him is on the agenda.

  36. Congrats on you upcoming wee one. Have been thinking about getting the new sweet tea pattern if my name should be drawn…

  37. Pineapples are so prickly. I hope for everyones sakes that Baby Knitspot isn’t like a pineapple. The colors on your yarn are gorgeous and now I have to knit some hats. Inspired by your blog. My mom knit me a hat like that when I was a toddler and I still have it and wish it fit me now.

  38. Delightful comparison with the pineapple for size, not prickly points! A gift certificate for KnitSpot would be fabulous while we wait for the first FIFC shipment. Thanks.

  39. oh gosh look at you, great post erica!! i remember when you spun that yarn, sigh. baby knitspot was just a twinkle in your eye back then!

  40. I just love how you use the fruit as a visual aid. But does the size include the green leaves or is it just the fruit itself?

You look amazing, by the way!

  41. Really pretty handspun yarn- that should make one cute hat! I hope you’ll post a photo of the hat when you’re done.

  42. It is so funny to see the fruit size comparisons. Just love it and the yarn you spun to make the cap. Love all the Knitspot patterns and especially the multiple sizes Anne incorporates.

  43. Congratulations. I have a grandson and an “almost-granddaughter” on the way this fall . . . . those hats sound like the perfect thing to put on the needles. Salam wa sa’aadah Linda

  44. I have 3 babies arriving in the next few months (well, not ME, but in my family!) and would love to make them a little hat!

Of course, I want to make baby knitspot a little pineapple hat, too, but that’s a project for another day!

  45. The mommy looks beautiful and I love using non-traditional blue and pink pastels for baby knits. Hope you get to hold, coddle and admire the little one to your heart’s content.

  46. Baby hats are so satisfying. Useful, easily completed, and as I remember, at this point in your pregnancy, a quick knit is just what you need in your hands.

  47. Erica, congratulations I know he will be spoiled. I love the hand spun you chose for the hat. My mother always said to put babies in pastels, but I only did that for my little girl, my son got reds, greens, etc. That is not to say that Catherine didn’t have her share of bright colors, she was and still is partial to purple (she is 28). All the best.

  48. I have just the yarn for this and a baby shower to attend in two weeks. Thanks for the inspiration. Congratulations to you as well.

  49. Beautiful choice, Erica. Can hardly wait to see photos of Baby Knitspot modeling his cap! You look radiant!

  50. What a cute hat and a glowing mother-to-be! And I’d definitely love to add another Knitspot pattern to my list of projects to knit.

  51. Thanks for the heads-up for this hat pattern. Looks like a fun knit.

YOUR spinning looks Terrific. And to knit with your own creation for your ow creation. Love, love, love.

    Love your comparison photo

    hugs

  52. Mom and Baby Knitspot looking great! But y’all will be even cuter in matching stocking caps once the cold weather arrives. We will eventually get some cold weather this year, right? (fingers crossed for that, too)

Thanks for the contest! Always fun to think ‘you may already be a winner!”

  53. I have been looking for a stocking cap pattern for my 16 yo daughter. This is perfect and I even have the perfect handspun yarn to work with!

  54. I love those colors for a boy, great choice! And thank you for posting the pattern, I’ve been wanting something like this for two of my grandsons.

  55. Ooooh…I’ve been looking for a hat like this for my granddaughter. Congratulations on your boy!

  56. It’s so funny thinking of a baby as the size of a pineapple. Just a few weeks to go before that little pineapple is born. Can’t wait to see him. Thanks for the giveaway.

  57. You are glowing 🙂
    Congratulations on your little boy!
    The Briar Rose is lovely.

  58. Love the colors of the handspun; at least you can try the hat on a pineapple to make sure the size is right :).

  59. Congratulations on your baby boy! Here is to a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy!

  60. I’d love it if you would share a photo of baby knitspot in the hat when he eventually wears it this winter – babies in handknits are a favourite of mine.

  61. A boy, yeah! My favorite hat for the whole family is Anne’s Four Way 2 needle hat. It can be made in several different ways and looks great on everyone.

  62. That hat is a favorite of mine!! It’s also great for using up little bits of yarn or “playing” with patterns — usually fits someone!!

  63. You know? With my first, I remember reading what size vegetable/fruit my baby was at that time. It never occurred to me to take a picture with said vegetable/fruit! That would have made a cute collection!

  64. I love the pictures of you with the fruit! And a pointy baby hat would be such a cute present. Or matching family hats…. Oh, the possibilities

  65. Awwww- Way too cute!!! And baby is just growing and growing. Can’t wait to see the wee little finished hat!

  66. Congratulations on your new son! I’m sure he will have a wonderful selection of knits to wear.

  67. Your handspun is going to make a fabulous baby hat! I thought I was pretty familiar with the knitspot pattern shop (spending lots of time browsing there and owning many, many of the patterns myself), but somehow this pattern had escaped my notice. Hope you will post photos of the completed hat.

  68. I love the pattern and the yarn and you look so beautiful. I had two boys (who are now both grown) but boys are so much fun.

  69. Your handspun is gorgeous!! (And so are Chris’s colors.) Can’t wait to see the finished hat!

  70. What a darling little hat. I think your handspun yarn is beautiful too. I do like Briar Rose fibre – the colours sometimes look a little ‘murky’ in the fibre, but spun up, it’s magical! The colours suddenly leap out at you. Yours is just lovely! Can’t wait to see a modelled photo!

  71. Lovely handspun, the colour is wonderful too. All the best with for the last few weeks of your pregnancy. One of my daughters was born Sept 3.

  72. Beeautiful handspun – lucky baby! Congratulations on your upcoming new addition! Knowing the sex of the baby results in better knitting/yarn choices!

  73. Wow a baby swaddled in lots of kniited creations. Tat is a blessed soul.

    Congratulations!

  74. Best wishes! It’s so much fun to imagine who your baby will be and start buying/making gender appropriate clothes, isn’t it?!

  75. Congratulations Erica! I too just found out last week that I am expecting a boy…#3 for me. I picked up knitting as a means of meditation after my twins were born 3 years ago and now expecting another I find myself wanting to knit him EVERY pattern I see. This little hat is no exception.
Thanks for sharing such a cute pattern and your lovely handspun!!

  76. I love your fruit comparisons! They make me smile. You will find great joy in making things for your son – especially since cute, non-“commercial” boys clothes are in short supply in retail right now. They think all moms want their sons to dress like gangsters rapp artists lately…..I need to start making those hats- we have 18 granadchildren.

  77. I always put my finished baby items on my belly to see if they would fit the child in progress… Anything to make the last weeks go more quickly.

  78. Congrats on your little boy! Your photo shows you looking oh so healthy and happy! He may be kicking and punching but this is a lot more comfortable than that pineapple would be in utero! Loved the handspun for the hat! Gorgeous colors!

  79. I love knitting for all babies. There’s something about the tiny sizes that makes me small. I’m sure this hat is just one of many to come.

  80. I love the stocking cap……I have a feeling this will not be the 1st nor the last knitted item Baby Boy Knitspot will receive…..

  81. Love the stocking cap and can’t wait to see it on the baby. Woohoo, a chance to win a gift certificate from Knitspot – Pick me! Pick me!

  82. Oh Erica, you look wonderful! Anne didn’t tell us about the baby boy part! I cannot wait to see this little guy!

  83. Love that yarn you spun. Really beautiful the way it knits up. You look great too! So glad your pregnancy is going well!

  84. You have inspired me to pull out my spinning wheel again to make this cute hat. You are looking radiant! Relax these last few weeks!

  85. Love the colors in the Briar Rose fiber you’ve spun. Perfecto! And Erica, you look absolutely radiant!

  86. I love your picture Erica and so excited for you two! Quite a switch from the conversations down under.

  87. Hopefully he’s not as spiky as a pineapple. Love the hat, I’ve been looking for a cute baby knit for a soon-to-be niece or nephew.

  88. Congrats on baby boy knitspot! Briar Rose Polwarth is divine to spin up…I ended up using mine for a hypoteneuse. Glad I still have some roving left…you gave me inspiration for the homestretch of Tour de Fleece. Thanks!

  89. Your pineapple photo was a real giggle. Thank goodness Baby Knitspot doesn’t have little spines and sharp leaves. The handspun hat will be lovely.

  90. Ooooo, what beautiful yarn! How do you find time to spin with everything else you do?!

  91. Awww you look wonderful, truly glowing 😉
Looove your handspun, I have beginner spinning classes all day Friday at Rhinebeck …
