inky dinky

Posted on Posted in patterns

now that the holidays are done and true, deep winter has set in, many of us are thinking about projects to keep us company for a longer while, and those with a taste of spring rolled in will rise to the top of the heap.

or maybe you are one of the lucky people who found out over the holidays that your family will be welcoming a new addition in the near future. you’ve already starting sorting through scads of patterns, trying to narrow down your choices for the perfect gift.

here’s an adorable little sweater project that’s just the right size for easing back into serious knitting commitment—it has all the parts of a big sweater, in bite-sized bits; most of us could polish it off in a week or less.

and if you finish it up and want to keep going, the cradle me blanket makes an excellent companion piece, in matching stitch patterns

the baby will love you forever for it . . .

shown here: size 12 mos, in knitting notions classic merino sport, colorway pear.

i had so much fun knitting the cradle me blanket in knitting notions snuggly sport weight merino that i couldn’t resist the urge to cast on a marching jacket, inspired by the impending birth of catherine’s youngest son. catherine’s beautiful yarn bases, available in a wide array of semi-solid and variegated colorways will knock your socks off—go take a look in her online shop or visit her booth at an upcoming event near you; she’ll be back on the road beginning in february.

it took a while for us to get the pattern completely ironed out but it was worth the effort; we flew through the test knitting with hardly a hitch.

many, MANY thanks to my friends barb, tana, agnes, catherine, and theresa (oops, i can’t find a link!) for their speedy knitting and excellent feedback on this pattern. i think we’ve really dished up a good one together.

and last but certainly not least, my eternal gratitude to the irrestible miss addison, who really went above and beyond her threshold for us on a sunny day last september at grandma janet’s house.

we may have had a few tears, but i swear, it was never our intention to make her cry . . .

i think in the end, she probably forgave us.

  1. Those are the most adorable pictures!! I have the yarn (Miss Babs) and the buttons that I got at Midwest Folk and Fiber Fest over summer.

  2. YAY!!! I’ve been waiting with bated breath for you to release this one 🙂 Two of my SIL’s are expecting, and I think they’ll each be getting an inky dinky…

  3. Oh my goodness, she is ADORABLE. And yes! I know of a new one coming, and this will be perfect!

    *adding to queue*

  4. Great sweater

While in San Diego head to Pacific Beach for breafast at Kono’s right by the pier – Have a number 2 and you won’t need to eat until supper!!!!

  5. This baby is just the most adorable little one! I love the sweater and hat also. Beautiful.

  6. Little Addison just makes me smile! Don’t you just want to cuddle her when she starts to give up?
The sweater set is perfect – I bet it becomes a classic. The fact that it matches the blanket makes it all the more an heirloom project.

  7. What a precious baby! The pattern is perfect, I love it. And pear is my all-time favorite knittingnotions color (well, besides, dusk and french marigold, and…)

No babies to knit for at the moment, but this will be the pattern to choose when I do!

  8. (thud) that is just TOO ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!

(runs off to check stash for appropriate yarn) Little niece/nephew will be born in the dead of winter this month and needs warm things!

  9. My great niece is just the sweetest little lady!!! I think she was born to model!!! Hat, sweater and blanket are over the top!!!!! Thanks Anne

  10. The inky dinky is adorable. And what a beautiful little person to model too.
I don’t remember you ever doing a raglan design before so I have a question. Why? Did it fit the stitch pattern or seem like a good construction for a baby? I love raglans so I’m interested in your decision to use this garment construction.

  11. OMG, what an adorable little girl, she makes me soooo want a grandchild! My step-son just got married. . . wonder if they need any of these wonderful things in the NEAR future??
What a great job you’ve done!

  12. What a gorgeous outfit! That last photo is just priceless! I don’t have any baby knits planned for the moment, but will be turning to this one when I do! Thanks. Lovely colourway too.

  13. Oh is she a cutie! And the sweater set is lovely too! 🙂 I got to meet Catherine’s youngest when he was a couple of weeks old and again in Sept. at the WI Sheep & Wool festival. He is a darling.

  14. This sweater is adorable. I don’t think I fall into the group who “could polish it off in a week or less” – but still, those small knits do go faster! I’m working on the Cradle Me blanket right now, and loving it, though it is slow going. Maybe I’ll start looking for yarn to make this sweater & hat…

  15. I think I have to knit this for a patient of mine, who I have treated since she was a little girl and is now expecting her own.

    Lovely little child.

  16. Ah…just finished the Cradle Me Blanket in a denim blue but don’t have enough (sadly discontinued) yarn left for this. I’m thinking my (due in…nine days!) new grandson might look handsome in a nice grey Inky Dink. LOVE this!!
