Vintage Knitspot – Snow on Cedars

Posted on Posted in patterns, projects

Ah, it’s time once again for me to dust off the archives! Anne is super busy with all kinds of fun stuff (she’ll fill you in on Sunday) and I didn’t think you’d mind a little trip with me down memory lane. Plus, there’s a contest involved!

With the metro Detroit area covered in a new blanket of snow, it seemed apropos to highlight this beauty of a mitt pattern.

Snow on Cedars is a mid-length mitt with allover lace motifs of pine trees and snowflakes. Doesn’t this seem like the most delightful thing to knit for a friend? It’s the perfect accessory for chilly offices or knitting in drafty places. Or to wear running errands and not be bothered with taking your gloves on and off.

It’s a pretty quick knit as well because the right and left are interchangeable. I can’t imagine I’m the only one that has knit two left mitts. Even I can’t screw this one up!

Don’t you just want to wrap these mitts around a hot cup of tea as you gaze out the window at the snow covered pines?

Can’t you see these mitts done up in Breakfast Blend Fingering? Won’t they be a little piece of heaven for your hands?

I think this duo and I are going to spend some time together this weekend. Hmmm…coffee, hot cocoa, tea, hot toddy…I definitely have options. Or maybe you guys can help me. What is your fave hot drink? Leave your suggestion in the comments by 10 pm EST on Feb 24 and I’ll pick a winner to receive this mitt pattern!

I’m off to check on Baby Knitspot before I turn in for the night. Today he turned 6 months!

I can’t believe it. It seems like Aug 22 was yesterday.

Happy weekend everyone!

  1. My fav hot drink? Hmm..it’s got to be my homemade spicy cinnamon chai with sweetened condensed milk. Sometimes when I need a little more buzz, I add a shot of espresso to my chai for an early morning eye opener! Yum!

  2. It may seem more of something a little kid would like but I love hot chocolate. But I love just about anything that has to do with chocolate.

  3. No way has it been six months already! And he does get cuter every time he’s up there!

Being curious – what are these snow covered pines to which you refer? ;} We don’t have those here in Austin.

Favorite hot drink? Espresso. And more espresso!

  4. My favorite hot drink: hot cocoa with just a bit of Peppermint Schnapps! I think bartenders call it a Snuggler 😉

Thanks for bringing these mitts to my attention. My sister runs a cattle ranch in Utah and has had a tough winter. I’ve been looking for something I can knit up quickly for her – I think I’ve found it!

  5. My favorite hot drink is Constant Comment Tea. I love the aroma and the taste. The warmth of the cup is very nice, too. It’s about time I knit some mitts, never have. I’d use the Snow on Cedars pattern right away.

  6. My favorite hot drink is Ginger Lemon Tea with a dark honey like chestnut. You are not alone; at least socks don’t usually come in right and left.

  7. What a *supersweet* baby! He gets more adorable with every picture!!

My favorite hot drink can vary with the activity it accompanies. Of course we are talking knitting here, and I would have to choose some tea. Tazo passion herbal tea. Yum!

Betsy in the chilly Seattle suburbs

  8. My favorite hot drink is Yogi Bedtime Blend. It is a very subtle flavor and I like to drink it in the evening before bed. I think it has a bit of licorice in it for sweetness. Can easily be drank all on its own. It is very snowy, cold and wintry here in Northwestern Ontario. A few days last week I thought we could have been a movie setting for an Arctic blizzard, as it was so windy, snowy and frigid. Keeps me in the mood for knitting though. Your baby is very healthy and happy–you are blessed.

  9. My favorite hot drink at lunchtime is coffee…I alternate between Green Mountain’s Neopolitan Blend and new decaf flavor that I cannot remember right now.

At dinner I drink tea…Earl Grey with Lavendar or Honeybush Caramel, a roobios blend. My meal determines which flavor I drink. Tonight I had the Honeybush Caramel to go with my tilapia and rice. YUM!

Love those sweet cheeks on Baby Knitspot! He is growing so fast!! (And getting cuter by the minute, too.)

  10. Cute mitts and even cuter Baby Knitspot! My favorite hot drink is a decaf Americano with a flavor to sweeten it double cupped so it says warm longer. Stay warm.

  11. Such a sweet baby! I wish him (and you) continued happiness.

My favorite hot drink? Well, I drink a lot of coffee, it’s what keeps me going during the day, but for sheer enjoyment I love a large cup of fragrant black tea – preferably Earl Gray!

  12. Hmmmm… This is hard bc my pick depends on my mood. I really like organo gold latte ( its an instant coffee but way better than say folgers or some nasty stuff like that ) or a nice homemade chai with almond or soy milk…and then there’s a hot toddy 🙂 and gunpowder green tea is high on the list too 😉

  13. I’m a coffee addict 🙂

I don’t need the pattern (already have it!) but just wanted to say thank you for the Breakfast Blend suggestion. I’ve been sitting on the pattern for a couple of years looking for just the right yarn. A coffee coloured pair of mitts would be lovely I think. If only there was a matching hat and scarf…. (hint!)

  14. Hello: A cup of coffee at 5:00 a.m. with a touch of carnation’s milk. I love the picture of Baby Knitspot, he looks so happy, it makes me smile.

  15. Baby Knitspot is a real cutie!

The pattern is lovely. I am a sucker for mitt patterns.

As for favorite hot drink, I love a cup of freshly ground, freshly brewed, hot, strong (strong enough to wake the neighbors) coffee in the am and again at lunch.

  16. Baby Knit-Spot is so handsome! He is amazing!
With all the wonderful things out there to drink, I am a dinosaur and still like a plain cup of good coffee. I like a little plain 1/2 & 1/2 in it, but that’s all…no flavors, no special treatments. From time to time I will add a spoonful of hot cocoa mix, also plain, for a little something special, but coffee simple is my favorite.
And fingerless mitts are perfect for North Florida winters!

  17. I love a cup of warm almond milk before bed. It’s just sweet enough on its own. Very relaxing. When I was little, though, my mom made warm milk with nutmeg. Neither of these would prepare me for knitting, though, just sleeping!

  18. My favorite hot drink is the Mint Condition Mocha at Caribou Coffee. On Wednesdays, my son, Charlie, gets a hot chocolate, and I have a mocha and we sit there together while waiting to pick my daughter up from her drawing class at the park district.

Padraig looks wonderful. His features get more defined each time you post. I love his wispy hair!

  19. I have always admired these mitts but somehow have never quite gotten around to buying the pattern! My favorite drink is to take my mug-of-the-moment and put in 3 scant tsp sugar, 1 rounded tsp cocoa, make into a paste with a splash of milk, then add more milk to fill. Heat in the microwave . Good with coffee in it too, after you’ve drunk it down some.

  20. My favorite drink in the morning is Peet’s French roast coffee in the morning with sugar and cream and not the fat free creamer either! I like a little fat to get my day rolling. In the evening though I enjoy either sleepy time tea by celestial seasonings or chamomile.

This pattern is one of my favorites for mitts. I have yet to do a pair of fingerless mitts for myself. Maybe these will be the first:)

  21. My favorite hot drink…so many to choose from I am a sucker for strong Ethiopian coffee with a touch of milk in the morning. However, during the day and when I am knitting tea does the trick! Preferably Earl Grey or Lemon Grass tea…delicious… and baby knitspot is such a cutie! Happy 6 month bday! 🙂 And speaking of hot drinks, I have had to limit my caffeine intake because I am expecting with means half a cup of coffee in the am and no Earl Grey during the day! The mitts are lovely! I will have to knit up a pair!

  22. Spicy chai with a little milk and brown sugar makes my day when it is that cold! Using the prepared spice mixtures I also add a little black tea to give it a little boost in the caffeine department!
A big mug full and me and my knitting in front of the blazing chimney fire!
How much toastier can you get?

  23. Mulled wine, definitely, with homemade chai being a close second. We heat up the wine very gently while heating some sugar or honey with water and spices at a low simmer. Then we combine in various proportions, depending on our mood and what time of day it is.

  24. My favourite hot drink is probably something you’ve never heard of – Ovaltine. It tastes just like the centre of a Malteaser.

  25. Baby Knitspot is adorable! My favorite drink for daytime would be a mocha, peppermint, pumpkin spice, or chocolate. The evenings are good for lemon or fruity green teas. Now a hot Texas day requires a tall ice tea or sometimes just a cold drink of water.

  26. I love a piping hot chai tea latte! Target sells the k-cups so I can enjoy it at home with my knitting and no trip out in the cold to Starbucks.

  27. I see someone else drinks Ovaltine. That is what we had growing up and I still love it. And I love the pictures of baby knitspot, what a cutie!

  28. Once a year at Christmas…A Tom and Jerry.
For everyday (many times a day)…Earl Grey.
Kiss that beautiful boy and nibble his little neck for me:)

  29. The drink I have first thing in the morning and late afternoon. A nice cup of Yorkshire Gold tea. It’s refreshing and invigorating. In fact, I’m drinking my morning cup now. New York has had a serious cold snap. Those mitts would be GREAT! Cute baby.

  30. favorite hot drink…hands down, it’s coffee! fresh-brewed, strong, unadorned. it’s one of life’s little gifts and i enjoy it daily! i would love to knit the mitts. 🙂

  31. Pretty baby and pretty mitts.

Beverage choice for cold days; hot cocoa. What else is so comforting (and fattening but who cares when you’re chilled)?

  32. Lovely post about those beautiful mitts. And look at that little guy grow!

Favorite beverage is usually a Latte, but I have become very fond of some of the teas from a local Teahouse that friends and I often go to. My current favorite is Butter Truffle.

  33. Love the mitts. Can’t believe baby knitspot is 6 mos. old either! Wow what a cutie. Hot coffee with lots of cream for my fav. hot drink.

  34. Ooh…I love this mitt pattern!

I am a coffee lover. I have never been one to drink it for the caffeine…I just love the smell and flavor. I love a cup in the evening! Lately, my favorite is Pike’s Peak Roast (from Starbucks) with Southern Butter Pecan (International Delights) creamer…warm and comforting!

  35. I drink lots of Lady Earl Grey at home. If I can get out, I hit a local Middle Eastern market for some sweet hot tea. Something about the sage and rosewater combination is heavenly.
