Vintage Knitspot – Snow on Cedars

Posted on Posted in patterns, projects

Ah, it’s time once again for me to dust off the archives! Anne is super busy with all kinds of fun stuff (she’ll fill you in on Sunday) and I didn’t think you’d mind a little trip with me down memory lane. Plus, there’s a contest involved!

With the metro Detroit area covered in a new blanket of snow, it seemed apropos to highlight this beauty of a mitt pattern.

Snow on Cedars is a mid-length mitt with allover lace motifs of pine trees and snowflakes. Doesn’t this seem like the most delightful thing to knit for a friend? It’s the perfect accessory for chilly offices or knitting in drafty places. Or to wear running errands and not be bothered with taking your gloves on and off.

It’s a pretty quick knit as well because the right and left are interchangeable. I can’t imagine I’m the only one that has knit two left mitts. Even I can’t screw this one up!

Don’t you just want to wrap these mitts around a hot cup of tea as you gaze out the window at the snow covered pines?

Can’t you see these mitts done up in Breakfast Blend Fingering? Won’t they be a little piece of heaven for your hands?

I think this duo and I are going to spend some time together this weekend. Hmmm…coffee, hot cocoa, tea, hot toddy…I definitely have options. Or maybe you guys can help me. What is your fave hot drink? Leave your suggestion in the comments by 10 pm EST on Feb 24 and I’ll pick a winner to receive this mitt pattern!

I’m off to check on Baby Knitspot before I turn in for the night. Today he turned 6 months!

I can’t believe it. It seems like Aug 22 was yesterday.

Happy weekend everyone!

  1. I make Chai tea but add a shot of expresso….yum! Another option is to make regular coffee but add some chai fat fee concentrate and some milk-I warm the concentrate and milk in the microwave first, then add hot coffee….double yum!

  2. Hmm, so many to choose from – Love slices of fresh ginger, lemon and honey with hot water and a shot of good whiskey!

  3. Abuelita-Mexican hot chocolate. That hint of cinnamon is soooo good. Thanks for this weekend contest.

  4. Wow….6 months already for baby knitspot! So cute.
As far as hot drinks, I really just prefer Twinings Darjeeling with honey

  5. SIX MONTHS!!!!!!! Can he get any cuter? Give his cheek a little smoosh.

What better than a pot of steamy hot Earl Grey Tea.

    Stay toasty
    Hugs

  6. Right now I’m enjoying an herbal tea blend of sweet spearmint, lavender, and elder berries called Fairy Tea from Owens Acres it’s delicious! Thanks for the chance to win.

  7. I am mostly a tea drinker, with a little milk and honey. But sometimes, nothing but a cup of hot cocoa will do. 🙂

  8. It would have to be tea – black with two generous sugars. (In fact I’m sitting here enjoying an early morning cup of tea as I write this). But then what type of tea? Earl Grey, Lady Grey, English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast or the delicious creme brulee tea with vanilla and caramel my daughter bought me for Christmas? There is a real tea for every mood.

  9. A big cup of Americano black with no sugar! For me it’s best if it is decaf, but once in a while I’ll get high test and then it’s speed knitting all the way!

  10. Hot cider spiced with a shot (or two) of a nice, dark, spiced rum! It’s just a wonderful cup of comfort and inspiration all in one!

  11. Hot drip coffee with vanilla flavoring is what I crave in the morning and evening – especially when brewed by my wonderful hubby! Baby Knitspot is just adorable – and growing so fast!

  12. Happy 6 months, big guy! My new baby hit 3 weeks yesterday, so my favourite drink is my one daily cup of full-caf coffee in the morning to get me up and running to look after my big boy (4.5 years) for the day…

  13. My baby is just 2 months old and we are nursing…so decaf nonfat milk lattes for me to get my calcium, or just herbal tea (pumpkin spice) when around the house. Cute baby! And nice looking pattern!

  14. hot coffee with amaretto creamer … or a fruity/herbal tea. (Current favorites are blackberry vanilla, bavarian wild berry, and acai/dragonfruit/melon.)

thanks for the opportunity to win! I’m going to make myself some tea now!

  15. I’m not much one for hot drinks – a hot toddy when I have a cold/sore throat helps, or I’ll drink one hot cocoa a winter.

  16. In the morning I’m a devoted coffee drinker but later in the day, especially if I can linger over it with some knitting, a cup of English Breakfast tea is perfect – and maybe a cookie or two!

  17. I always say coffee! Lately I have been taking afternoon tea though, and I never mind some hot chocolate especially if it includes home made marshmallows!

  18. Hot chocolate, I have to say…(and coffee and of course cafe mocha!)

And by the way….I just finished a pair of two left mitts last night! So funny that you said that. Luckily, I have enough yarn to now knit two right mitts. 🙂

  19. I have a Snow on Cedars kit and I really have to make it a goal to knit them this year. Baby Knitspot is adorable. I don’t need to enter as I have the kit but I’m just a plain decaf tea drinker at work every weekday morning.

  20. I enjoy a nice cup of black coffee or sometimes an English Breakfast tea.
Great pattern and a happy baby boy….am enjoying a 5 month old grand-daughter. Thanks.

  21. Starbucks Espresso Roast in the morning. Lapsang Souchong with a splash of cream and a drop of honey later in the day – smoky and a little sweet.

  22. I’m a tea drinker going way back to college (in the 70’s) – with cream, no sugar. Always a good way to warm up in the cold weather – we’re getting snow here in Maine today.

  23. These are STILL my favorite mitts from knitspot I’ve made, I did handspun with mine and they are awesome. I drink mostly tea. Red Rose only, with some honey and milk.

  24. My favorite drink these days is Rooibos tea, J&R brand. It’s soothing and healing. A colleague from So. Africa told me it is even given to babies there, to calm those with colic. Gotta be good for ya! Speaking of babies, Padraig is totally adorable. What a face and smile! Keep those pics coming.

  25. Mulled cider…or mulled wine. Either is delicious. Baby Knitspot is a little man now. Absolutely adorable. Does he have a knit sweater for these snowy days?

  26. What a cutie!
Couldn’t live without my dark roast coffee for everyday – for special occasions, hot cocoa with a nice shot of Frangelico.

  27. Love this pattern – have it with the yarn and still not made.. :(. I love cherry rose sencha green tea in the evenings but I sure drink my share of hot chocolate

  28. Coffee with half and half and a flavored syrup. I would drink it all day long. o) Love the pattern. Padraig is just a doll and he’s getting so big!

  29. Definitely Hot Chocolate. I prefer to sprinkle powdered chocolate and cinnamon on top. I can’t believe the baby is 6 months old already!

  30. Best hot toddy ever: Make a quick simple syrup by heating equal amounts (I use 2 cups each) of sugar and water in a saucepan. Add some ground ginger (about a half teaspoon) and a squirt (about a teaspoon) of lemon juice, and maybe a cinnamon stick. Heat just til hot, then fill a mug half full of this mixture. Save the rest of the simple syrup for another toddy. To your mug of syrup add boiling water and as much booze as you wish (I use brandy for my husband, and raspberry liqueur, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec for me). SO GOOD!!!

Try different amounts of ingredients to taste–when you have a cold, go heavy on the lemon and ginger and maybe add some honey.
