baby, you got it

Posted on Posted in book reviews/events

we took off this weekend for annapolis, MD, where my dear nephew james is marrying his lovely fiancée diana this evening. this is a wonderfully happy opportunity for our whole family to get together—since we are spread fairly far and wide, that doesn’t happen often enough it seems.

anyway, in order to spend the most time possible with them, i thought i would take a few days off from the blog. but not without a treat for you! a book giveaway is in order, yes?

and since labor day is nearly upon us, i have just the thing (and this is in no way a nudge to the newlyweds!)

in the same vein as the wonderful 60 quick knits book, sixth&spring books has brought us another treasure trove of fun projects in cascade 220—this time, for babies in 60 quick baby knits.

this one is a total cute fest for us knitterly suckers—in the best possible way. with all manner of baby projects represented from blankets to sweaters to last minute scene-stealers

this book has it all. and if that wasn’t enough, every project presented is knit up in cascade 220 (or 220 superwash if you will), a perennial favorite among knitters for its nice hand, color range, versatile weight, and the fact that it is very readily available at an economic price.

there is a very decent representation of projects in each category, requiring a range of skill levels and time investment. this is one of the best things about the book—if you are learning to knit, there is something for you.

and if you’ve been knitting for years, but forgot about that baby shower you are attending this weekend, there’s something for you, too (i think this is my favorite thing in the book, hee-hee!). the accessory projects are too adorable—but many are quick knits, you can be sure.

and for planners, there are possibilities galore as well—several more intricate and amusing blankets are included.

which is not to say it’s all about blankets—i would never stop the baby parade there, haha. the book includes a number of really cute sweaters and garment sets.

being the aunt of many more boys than girls, i’m particularly happy about the number of truly handsome sweaters included for little guys

some with sleeves and some without; many with deeply-textured cables.

most are also unisex, if you’d like to knit one for that special little girl in your life. and if you’d like to knit something for a baby whose sex is as yet undetermined, there is plenty to choose from there

for me, the real fun begins with the accessories (i know you know what i mean, haha)

there is a hat to suit any mood you want to strike, from seriously handsome . . .

to traditional to super cute and amusing (see my fave above). feet and hand accessories are not lacking either

there are plenty of items here to use up the last of that project yarn or to make a nice smaller gift.

now here’s the best part—sixth&spring has generously offered to send one lucky reader of today’s review a gift copy of 60 quick baby knits. if you’d like to be in the running to win it, please leave a comment at the end of this post by 9pm EST on sunday, september 4th. we’ll announce the winner as soon as i can after that (we should be home on monday, but you never know!).

have a wonderful weekend!

F/Y/I — a lot of my lys will no longer be carrying Cascade 220 (regular), as there was a significant price increase, and they all will be carrying a different workhorse yarn — the skeins went from less than $6 to almost $10 retail — a huge jump. Sad; it is a great work-a-holic yarn.
