i’m not lost in a blizzard

i might be lost in “andrew’s blueland” though.
that’s the name of andrew’s new drawing. i know; there’s no blue.
don’t feel limited by the lack of a blue crayon—the blue is all a state of mind.

so we got to texas. our plane left right on schedule, too. the snow let up for a little bit just in time for our departure and by saturday we were waking up to the sounds of seven giggling voices whispering outside our bedroom door.

we’ve spent a whole day out of doors at zilker park, and i have beautiful photos from the botanical gardens but i can’t seem to get them off of my brother’s camera onto my computer.

we’ve also had some spring rain, which has kept us indoors since sunday, but even that has been a lot of fun. and it’s supposed to be much nicer for the remainder of the week.

we’ve been playing games, watching movies, and listening to music

my brother joe is a very talented musician (don’t let the face fool you—he’s just concentrating).

and doing some knitting too.
susan is using the time together to learn to knit so she’ll have something interesting to do with her time this summer

and as we all know, learning to knit usually includes learning to untangle yarn.

today we went to their old house which they are fixing up a bit to rent and helped out with some work for while. i was seen painting a whole room, though no photos exist to prove it. david was laughing a little since i never pitch in on DIY at home (it’s just not my thing).

in between all the activity i have found a surprising amount of time to knit.

these are done.

and now i’m working on these

it’s not the best photo for showing off the texture but i’ll try to do better tomorrow. turns out though, that i like the wrong side better.

i discovered this after i had about 5 inches of the leg knit. but andrew concurs, so we made a joint executive decision to make the wrong side the right side—i reversed it when i got to the heel flap, and we like it a lot better now.

i also started and worked on my secret project during the flight over, and a little bit since i got here. i’m breathing easy now that it is underway. i still have to finish up the snow shawl when i get home but this will be a nice alternate project.

hopefully tomorrow i’ll have a few more austin photos to share. it’s a fun city with lots to do and i’m already wishing we could stay longer.

  1. Enjoy Austin! Anyplace without snow or ice about now is always a nice break. I love your design helper Andrew. He’s obviously got great instincts!

  2. Hi Anne, So glad you and David are safe and sound and having fun in Austin. See you soon.

  3. And did you see the pics in the news of Ohio and their snow dig-out???? Holy smokes Anne, you picked the right time to go to Texas!!! Hope you have great time with the kids!

  4. Glad you are having a good time, I hear Austin is so very hospitable! I know having family there helps 🙂 What stands out in this post is when you mention, “…the blue is all a state of mind” – no wonder you have such a keen sense of design! You see things in a wonderful way! Enjoy those seven giggling voices and the guitar playing!

  5. I LOVE Austin… they hide their shopping malls, or at least they used to, it’s been a long time since I’ve been there… it’s a beautiful place… how’s about the Greater Grackles? So funny to listen to… they alone are nearly worth the price of admission for me. :^D

  6. Anne- Everything is big in Texas, isn’t it?

Don’t kids crack you up? I’d rather spend time with kids than most adults- they’re so great.

And as for those Executive decisions- kids are invaluable.

  7. Ohhhh someone over here REALLY liked Andrew’s art…..guess who. It looks like your having a blast, I hope the rest of your visit is spent with just as much fun, giggles and knitting as the start of your visit 🙂
Oh, and trust me, by the time you hop on the flight for home, you’ll need this info…..Excedrine for Migraines works WONDERS 😉 kidding.

  8. Aren’t kids the greatest for taking executive decisions? No second guessing, no false hesitations, no wondering what so-and-so will be thinking if they do this or that; they know what they like and what they don’t, and they’re not afraid to say so!
    Enjoy your time with them!

  9. Surely, Anne, you have visited Hill Country Weavers’ great knit shop on South Congress Avenue?!?! It’s not to be missed! My son lives in Austin and I always pay them a visit when I’m in town…which will be next week! I LOVE Austin, Texas!!!!!

  10. So glad you aren’t buried in a snowbank! LOL

And glad that you are having a great time. Austin is one of my favorite cities. My old job took me there a couple of times a year and I really miss those visits!

Vibing for some lovely spring weather for the rest of your vacation.

  11. Glad you are having a great time and enjoying good weather and hanging out with the kids. (Giggling outside your door! I love it!) And what a coincidence—I have a brother named Joe and he is also a musician!

  12. We went to Zilker an age and a half ago. VERY nice. Enjoy your Texas time. Austin is a cool town.

  13. Ohmygosh you’re in Texas? And I probably won’t get to meet you! 🙁 Which seems a shame when you’re so close to Houston, relatively speaking. Alas.

Though I will nth the coolness of Austin, and second Hill Country Weavers. I will also mention The Knitting Nest, a short drive from HCW.

Oddly enough, a friend of the husband’s was in town from Ohio this past weekend. I thought of you. 🙂

  14. It sounds like you are having a great time….and you managed to get out of Ohio just in time :-).

I can’t wait to hear more about your secret project when it is not a secret anymore….intriquing!

  15. Welcome to Austin!!! You missed the drought of the past 5 months and experienced our blessed rain, REAL rain, not just walk down the sidewalk and get wet from 100 percent humidity!!
