Snowflakes in Cedarwoods

Posted on Posted in designing, lace/shawls, patterns

A flurry of snowflake and pine tree motifs swirl over the surface of this square shawl to knit with laceweight yarn. Shown here in Sweet Lace, colorway snow squall, it is just the tone and hue of fresh snowdrifts in icy air, but looks just as elegant in a fresh cream shade or many others (as customers have shown). Due to the large size of this piece (5 feet or more) it makes a simply gorgeous throw or bed scarf for the home. [See Whispering Pines on Ravelry for the smaller, triangle version of this shawl.]

While we no longer offer Sweet Lace yarn, any laceweight will work. From our Bare Naked Wools shop, we suggest:

Cormo in Purity – This is a 2-ply, worsted spun, 100% wool yarn and is most like the original sample shown. (approximately 3 skeins needed)

Fresh Lace in Natural – The silk and linen blend is an excellent choice for summer wear and creates more of an heirloom finished piece. (approximately 4 skeins needed)

Cashmere Lace in Natural Cream – For pure luxury, you can’t beat this 100% cashmere yarn (approximately 7 skeins needed)

You can view more information and purchase this square shawl knit pattern through Ravelry or Bare Naked Wools, our online store.

I am very VERY grateful to my good friend nan has once again pitched in enthusiastically to test knit and contribute her excellent advice and feedback on the pattern.
I’m equally indebted to my very special friend Vanessa, master of the knitting needles, for pulling this one out so fast once again; don’t blink or you might miss her!
and of course, none of us would be at all happy with it if it were not for Rachel, who very expertly proofreads each and every line of these patterns.
thank you both so much!

  1. Oh my! I am positively drooling. A true piece of art! Congratulations to all involved.
I had pre-ordered the yarn from Michelle; I just downloaded the pattern … and there I am faced with four days off! Thank you!

  2. That is breathtaking!! Oh, well. Another one of your patterns for my shawl collection :-). Thanks!!

  3. There’s just something about those huge square shawls all drapey over the arms and shoulders. It’s just lovely, congrats on another winner Anne!

  4. Wow.
I don’t know if I’ll be brave enough to ever tackle a square shawl (I’m still only 1/3 of the way through the Wing of the Moth, the first of your patterns I’ve bought) but that is gorgeous.

  5. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh,,,, so,,,, so,,,,,,
EXQUISITE! that’s the word I was looking for. I too love the last photo, brava Anne!

  6. Wow! Thanks so much for sharing such a wonderful photo shoot. The shawl is truly inspirational! It’s like a breath of fresh air to make us feel that spring is truly here.

  7. I’m breathless. Think I’ll tackle the triangle version, but back to my bee shawl. So many shawls, so little time to knit them.

  8. You have created a work of art…again! It is beautiful. I am amazed how quickly you kick out these masterpieces.

  9. Yay! Its done!!! It turned out so GORGEOUS! Definitely one that I am going to be making very soon like! I even have the spinning down to just about the weight of yarn I will need.

You are one very talented lady. Bravo!

  10. Oh, Anne! Another exquisite shawl. And you are workin’ it… love the hair and make-up doing justice to your latest creation. We knitters are fortunate indeed to have such a talented designer creating one beauty after another.

  11. Lovely! I can’t wait for the triangular version. Unfortunately I am just to vertically challenged for a large shawl. =)

  12. Anne!
How lovely and once again, I bow before you in humble gratitude of EVER being able to accomplish such a wonderful piece of work!

    You are SO my hero!!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! (and thank you for always responding to my silly questions!!)

  13. All the photos are wonderful, especially the last one. Your gift for designing lace has never been more apparent than in this “Snowflakes” shawl. How do you manage to take traditional tree and snowflake and eyelet motifs that have been used by innumerable other designers, and combine them into a whole that is truly a work of art?

  14. As Kermit the Frog says, “YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.” This is absolutely to-die-for. Thank you, thank you!

  15. It is gorgeous!
With the double layer of fabric, it looks so warm and cosy… It’s kind of funny to think that one can now wear snowflakes in order to keep warm in winter!

  16. Oh, it is so beautiful! I love your pictures, they really bring out the best in lace. Congrats again, you are a genius.

  17. Congrats on an amazingly breathtaking beautiful shawl Anne. Thank you for sharing this design and knitting journey, which I have thoroughly enjoyed watching.
Really looking forward to knitting the triangle version. My cranapple kit is on it’s way and are hoping to have it in time for the pattern release.
Currently knitting Gale, which is a very enjoyable knit.
Just finished my Totally Autumn Throw, which I’m very pleased with.
Many many thank you hugs for all your great inspiration and designs.

  18. Wow. Stunning, amazing, breathtaking—I am in awe. That is so beautiful. And the photos are so good, too! Anne, you are very, very talented.

  19. What a feat! I can imagine feeling bereft that it is no longer a work in progess, but elated with the end product. All of your designs are beautiful, but this one feels like you put so much heart into it. It is lovely and so still. It is as if you knitted peace. Thank you.

  20. Magnificent! btw… it even has that sense of ‘hushed silence’… you know? How did you do that? I LOVE IT! Brava, Anne, and to all your wonderful helping peeps as well, Brava!

  21. Omigawd, Anne. Consider my mind blown! Not sure which version I want, the square or triangle… I’m going to reserve judgment until I see both of ’em.

And one more thing–next time I see you, would you give me a lesson on how to wear shawls gracefully? 🙂 You always manage to look amazing in them–triangles, rectangles, squares, all shapes.

  22. oh. my. lord.

this is one shawl that i think i will have to buy the kit for. also, seeing yours off the needles and unblocked? i think i could go for that look as well. i am in awe of your talent.

    in awe.

  23. Anne, it is beautiful! I don’t know if I would ever be able to finish a shawl that large, but I surely may give it a try…so beautiful!

  24. Oh my god. It’s gorgeous! And huge! I had no idea it was going to be so big. Now I understand why it took you so long (for you, I mean. I’d still be casting on.) You could use it as a tablecloth. Not that you would, of course, but you could. Congratulations!

  25. Stop it! I can’t knit fast enough to keep with the new beauties! I have to have the triangle version but I REALLY have to finish the Bee Fields first.

Can’t wait to start it. Thanks so much for your stunning designs.

  26. Ordered, and Simurgh too. Now if you could just use your power for lace to provide us poor mortals with more time to knit your beauties, I’d be all set!

  27. this is absolutely so cool! And I am writing this at the airport on my iPod. I hope it works.
