finishing and starting again

Posted on Posted in designing, food and garden, lace/shawls, projects

when we were doing the photo shoot for the snow shawl the other day i noticed these under the lilac bush. it’s nice to finally see our daffodils again, even if they are not as advanced as some others i’ve seen (i was at beckie’s house today and she has bright yellow buds on hers).

especially nice because we woke up to more of this today

it looked as if it might really snow hard all day but then, mid-morning, the weather took a complete turnaround and the sun came out. still very cold, but i’ll take the blue skies.

thank you for all the lovely comments and emails about Snowflakes in Cedarwoods—finishing it up was really satisfying, though i was left in a strange state of mind. i realized today that in order to keep myself psyched through those last half-hour rows, i had entered a special sort of hibernation mode, and getting back into the swing of things is taking a little time.

blocking my own shawl was interesting; those 20 extra rows proved to make a big difference in the final size—it barely fit on my blocking sheet (aren’t you glad i took them out then?).

it will make a gorgeous coverlet for a bed i think, or maybe a wedding shawl, even if it is too big to use on a regular basis.
here’s a detail shot that i didn’t get from the blocking of the first shawl

a very pretty corner i think. but my favorite is still seeing the beautiful play of dark/light shadowing in the motifs

and here are the sisters together

the smaller one will go back to vanessa in a week or so.

i’ve jumped right into my secret project and now have over a third of it completed. it’s going much faster than the square shawl which is just what i needed.

i’m also motoring through the second school sock

and should be done in a day or two. melissa has generously test-knit the pattern and given the green light, so as soon as i have the pair ready for modeling photos, the pattern can be released. yay.

and i’ve been playing around with this

searching for just the right stitch pattern to bring out the sheer beauty of it. it is very fine and will do well in a large motif; i just have to find the right one. i have a strong urge to do stripes of some kind with it. hmm, still working that one out. in the meantime i’m trying a couple of other things too.

and that’s all i have today, actually. i think i’ll wander off to experiment some more with that beautiful alpaca. happy weekend.

  1. Good lord, but those shawls are gorgeous. Cats keep me from contemplating a lace bedcovering, but I’m tempted by the triangle possibilities.

  2. The shawls are lovely nestled together like that. I’m just so in awe of your talent. I’m glad that there are creative sorts like you out there so I will always have something to knit.

  3. I hope that gorgeous corner and border will be on the triangular version. The shawl is truly something special. I’m guessing the secret project is for Wooly Wonka’s Change of Season’s Club? Even though I think your pattern will be in the fall, I’m anxiously awaiting it.

  4. Anne, where did the 20 rows on the larger shawl come from? Just curious. It is not a strong preference but I find myself liking the larger one a little more. I can’t figure out why, since I don’t generally like a lot of blank space–which I think you said it was. Maybe you could let us know how to upsize if we want to? (Call me a masochist…)

Well, whatever. They are GORGEOUS either way. I know I am going to break down and knit this up sooner rather than later!

  5. I’m very excited!! I’m just waiting on the triangle pattern, and the yarn, of course. I ordered the snowsquall colourway, and I am flushed with anticipation.

  6. We’ve had a chilly spell here, too…even some snow in the hills!

The shawls are so lovely…they just glow!! I love that last picture…it looks so ethereal!

  7. That’s all you have today? That’s ALL you have??? LOL That would be “all” I’d have in a year!

And all you have is beautiful. Stunningly beautiful.

  8. I was just glad to see it wasn’t ‘feet’ of snow…eh?
Both shawls are beyond beautiful… I’m waiting for the triangular pattern also :^)
Mmmm, when I saw that beautiful yarn, new project, I thought ‘alpaca’… (I find the finer lace weight alpaca Very slippery on the metal needles though, I’ve had to switch to bamboo…) I am lovin’ the colours in it.

  9. You never cease to amaze me. Though I’ve never made one of your lace patterns, I keep a list of those I want to do. I’m just now working on my very first lace pattern and it’s going well so keep your fingers crossed for me.

  10. With all that was to be seen on the snow shawl, I hadn’t noticed the wavy stitch pattern between the trees and the border. It is lovely! It totally looks like a beautiful snowy cover under the trees, with its characteristic unevenness caused by the wind blowing it here and there…

  11. Hmmm, what new beauty are you creating to beguile us with now? I love the color of that yarn cake and its tiny frill of knitting.

  12. I’d LOVE the full-sized shawl on my bed. How wonderful that would be!!!

But I’m going to stick to the triangle and make it for me. That’s such an amazing piece of lace!
    (((hugs)))
