a quick monday night post

jester is fast flowing off the needles—by working on it in classes today, i was able to get it over one-third of the way to its final length. i snapped this photo on my break between sessions today, so imagine it about twice as long, or maybe a little more.

we all love this scarf—the yarn is such a cheery, juicy color, and so soft; it will make a perfect fall topper for a spicy brown sweater. oops, i don’t have one of those . . .

i know i’ve said it before but i am in dire need of new sweaters. you’re probably sick of hearing about it, especially since i’ve shown some perfectly good swatching efforts in that direction. but for sure, i am going to start that one soon. it’s really a must. i’d like to be a wee bit further along on the stole before i get going, but i’m hoping by the end of this week maybe, i’ll have a sleeve on the needles.

and who knows? maybe after that i’ll knit one up in a spicy brown (i have some delicious handspun that’s just the thing).

and i’m making good headway on the stole, so i almost feel like promising i’ll start the sweater. but i won’t. yet.

i’m finally on the right track once and for all . . . can you believe i had to rip the whole thing back again after i showed it to you the other day? yeah . . . after ripping back once because it was too wide, the second time it was too narrow (overcompensation i think).
now though, it’s just right.

yesterday we had spinning class which has become my favorite two hours of the week. i got back to work on some sock yarn i am spinning from the lincoln/corriedale/alpaca/nylon blend i carded up as a demonstration for my students some weeks back.

(i know—the photos is a little blurry. but it’s night and i’m too lazy to take 100 photos just to get one good one). i think it’s still possible to tell though, that the fiber has quite a bit of lanolin in it and the spun singles almost looks wiry from the greasy coating (greasy in a good way, though). once it’s washed, that wills often, the fibers will unbind, and that yarn will poof like crazy. every time i spin this fiber (i have a lot in my stash) i think i am making a very fine yarn, but after it’s washed, it’s fat and lofty. not unpleasant but i’d like to get what i’m aiming for. so this time i am being very careful to spin tight and smooth.

ok, i know this is short, but i am seriously tired after a very full day, so i’m going to go find my knitting and turn on an audiobook (unaccustomed earth, by jhumpa lahiri—it’s wonderful)

  1. If you’ve ripped it once because it was too wide, and once because it was too narrow, and now it’s just right… is this going to be nicknamed the Goldilocks stole?

  2. considering the temps are cooling into ‘football weather’, maybe more than a sleeve in the next couple weeks! seriously, will really enjoy your sweater(s) progressing.

  3. The scarf and the yarn choice are great! If you’re into the Unaccustomed Earth, you will also enjoy the Interpreter of Maladies, for which Jhumpa Lahiri won the Pulitzer. It’s wonderful.

  4. You could always get incentive to knit a sweater by designing a really neat Aran sweater and then offering it in your store..hint hint ..nudge nudge. 🙂

Your stole is gorgeous! I’m looking forward to seeing it finished. I love it when your patterns come out, I look at them even before I’ve had my morning coffee! 😀

  5. I love the scarf and that yarn is lovely. It would be nice if I had a spinning class to go to each week then maybe I would get some spinning done. So much spinning so little time!!

  6. I had to laugh because I have that happen with every yarn I spin! I’ll think I have laceweight or at least fingering and it’s worsted/bulky when it’s done. 🙂 It’s happening to you because of the fiber, but it’s happening to me because I’m just learning and can’t judge it yet.

  7. Ooh, I love that yarn you’re spinning — such a gorgeous color. I’m guessing that they’ll keep your feet toasty warm this winter! 🙂

  8. Anne – that purple stole is way cool. I love that stitch pattern going back and forth. It reminds me of the inside plastering on some of the spanish-style houses out here in So Cal. It just really is way cool!

  9. HEY ANNE – relax , we love to hear from you and see what you are doing , but not so much pressure on yourself – audio books and knitting sounds great – I have yet to try one , know I should

    – stole looks enticing – yea , am all for those brown speckled or heathered fall colours

    – love the cool fall air – almost woOl sock weather YEA!!—-BEST PAT

  10. Oh, Anne, when you are finished spinning that yarn, would you show pictures of it before and after washing it? That would be great! I’d love to see the difference.

  11. The patterns on that lace swatch are just lovely, so flowy & swoopy, it will be very graceful.

Drop me a line when you are ready for a test knit for that sweater – I have 12 hours of driving next weekend, so if you have it ready by then I can absolutely guarantee progress! 🙂

  12. I love Jester! Check out the diamond point’s decrease on Judy Gibson’s site. It might be an interesting decrease to use in the Jester:

I haven’t swatched it yet but it looks like a great technique to add to the repetoire!

  13. Hi Anne. The new stole looks great, I’ve been looking forward to seeing what you do with the stitch pattern since you showed us the swatch months ago!

Any chance you could give us a sneak peek at your new Stonewall pattern for those of us who were to slow to sign up for the Wooly Wonkas club?

  14. Your jester scarf swatch caught my eye the other day, and I’m really liking it. Looking forward to information about the pattern.

  15. I think you’ve got something there that I can use my Sangria Handmaiden for! Yea!

And I am loving the looks of that stole it is absolutely gorgeous! I’m totally looking forward to more knitting time in TX. I so better get it!

  16. that stole is just amazing! Really Anne, how DO you keep doing it?

I am tempted by the iphone but I am sticking with my Motorola Razr for awhile longer; it’s already paid for, heh.
