Craftsy: Button Bands and Buttonholes

Posted on Posted in projects

Have you always wished you could take a class with Anne, but she never seems to teach close to home? Well, your wish has been granted! You can take a class with Anne from the comfort of your own home!

No, that doesn’t mean she’ll be available over Skype or Face Time on iPhone.

Though this is a fun perk of my job – video chatting with Anne!

The BIG news is that Anne filmed her first Craftsy class

and now her online course is live!

In Button Bands and Buttonholes, enrolled students will learn how to give a buttoned garment a flawless and finished look. Wouldn’t it be nice to put that last finished touch on a sweater and make it shine!?

I’m pretty excited to take the class myself, because I’ll learn how to:

  • plan the location of button bands and buttonholes, getting everything prepared to insert these elements easily and flawlessly
  • calculate the correct number of stitches to pick up for a nice, straight hanging button band that doesn’t splay out or pucker up
  • pick up stitches (3 ways) for different types of edges, how to work and finish the button band, and troubleshoot issues
  • choose beautiful buttons that will add texture as an elegant accent to the fabric and button band
  • space button bands and buttonholes, plus techniques for sewing on buttons
  • consider using seamless button bands

It’s amazing that all of this is packed into one class! And the best part? I can watch the class, in my pajamas, at midnight if I want to. Also, my access never expires. I can watch it over and over again each time I make a piece that needs button bands and buttonholes. The class is interactive, too. You can ask Anne questions and even share pictures of the part you’re having trouble with. And you can bookmark a section of the class, making note of where you want to return later!

I’ve only made a few buttoned handknits and they came out so-so. In one of my sweaters I skipped the buttonholes because I couldn’t get it right and I just close the sweater with a shawl pin. And even worse…I knit Baby Knitspot a sweater while I was pregnant and all it STILL needs is a button band. Since I’ve waited so long due to my fear of finishing it, the little cardi no longer fits him. Well, no more of this nonsense thanks to Anne’s class!

I can’t wait to learn all these techniques from the expert and get over my fear of button bands and buttonholes! And you can too by signing up here.

Enjoy! I can’t wait to see some of you on Craftsy.

  1. I am so psyched up about this class and any future ones as well. I live in MA, where Anne has never taught in person. This news has made my day.
Many thanks to all who were involved in this endeavor, which I hope will result in many more classes.

  2. Oooh, this is so exciting!

I’m going to sign up as soon as I get home & I can’t wait to take more classes with Anne!

    This is Brilliant!

  3. Just bought the class and watched the first lesson. It’s wonderful to have the availability to learn from Anne without leaving my easy chair!!! I want more classes. Yes, I am greedy like that.

Plus, Anne looks absolutely adorable. Thanks, Erica, for this heads up and the link to the discount. : )

  4. Oh! Guess what I’m going to do as soon as I get home from the office? Sign up for my first Craftsy class!

  5. Already half way through the class. I have already used the cast off Ann demonstrates and am a lot more confident about picking up for the front bands the I was. I may actually finish this sweater.

  6. Love the class. The instructions are clear, well presented and so very useful. Look forward to seeing additional classes offered from Anne.

  7. A friend told me it was available now. She enrolled and I will be this weekend. It will be nice to learn more on this subject from Anne and not leave my house. I’ll be watching for more classes.

  8. I signed up as soon as I saw it was available! I am very excited, I KNOW I will refer back to this class many times. I am planning many sweaters in my future, and I want them to all be beautiful, so this class is going to be a great help. Thank you! Looking forward to more classes from Anne.

  9. Just completed the new video and found it extremely helpful. Anne’s instructions are wonderfully clear and complete, and the close-ups are terrific — gone are the days guessing where/how to sew on button bands and distribute odd numbers of sts! Now I know what to look for–hooray! Thanks for the detailed instructions, Anne. Can’t wait for next videos.
