friends don’t let friends run out

kim is my total hero.
i ran out of yarn around 2:45 this morning—which was fine, because i had to stop and go to bed at some point. and not 7 hours later, the mail carrier arrived with another skein in hand.
just look at that match—kim is a wizard.

she even added a little present to the box—a skein of bambino in wood rose and a beautiful hand-sewn project bag.

for anyone who has been wondering or asking—and can i just say how cool it is that you have SO much faith in us, based on two blobs??—yes, indeed, there will be a kit for the Bee Blob Thing (it will have a real name) available through the woolen rabbit shop as soon as we can share all the details (probably mid-september). i believe it will be offered in three colorways: my color (which needs a name!), bodacious blossom (which is the color kim is knitting with), and her new sea dreams colorway.

so yeah—we need to name this colorway here; kim has left it up to me.
unfortunately, i’m not coming up with much; i liked someone’s suggestion that is looks like squash blossoms, but that’s kinda close to kim’s color name
and you are always so helpful with this

leave suggestion in comments (try to avoid links if possible, since that sends your comment into moderation). we’re looking for a fun, cheery, name, related to the color in this photo (such as, if anyone knows a slang phrase for “squash flower”, that might be cool).

in other news, first thing this morning a big truck pulled up outside and ejected several hunky men on our front walk. along with a bobcat.

it’s finally time for us to get new front steps—i thought i’d never see the day.
our steps have lots of character, but they are a hazard, especially with people coming here regularly for class. they are also very difficult to shovel and de-ice, being so uneven. the stoop and walk have been high on my list of things to fix for some time.

it’s been a really interesting journey to this day—we started shopping for estimates about a year ago for this job, making appointments with probably ten to twelve contractors. maybe four of them showed up to get measurements; only two actually gave us estimates and just one was someone we felt very good about.

why do contractors make appointments and not show up? or come to take measurements but send no followup or estimate? it just seems that, aside from wasting my time and putting a bad business card out there, it’s a total waste of their time to come out, look at a job, and not follow up. if they don’t have time, why do they waste it this way?

anyway, we did find someone we like (through a good friend who is a great builder) who is competent and courteous AND who—most importantly—started the job today.

(david has bobcat envy—he was totally glued to the upstairs window while they pulled the old concrete out)

they got all the old stuff pulled out today and the ground leveled (we have problems with tree roots). everything looks like it’s just about set for the concrete to be poured.

it’s been a satisfyingly noisy and productive day. now they’d driven off somewhere and it’s quiet, at least for a while. i think i’ll go make my acquaintance with that new skein of yarn.

after some lunch, that is . . .

  1. I like soleado, but I’m a sucker for the spanish names. Calabaza is unfortunate slang in our house, but calabacita is untainted. flor soleada? (maybe not) Sun on steps. Sun on bees. Sun on honey. (time to go to bed) Sun after fog.

Congratulations on almost steps! I love watching machines work, especially in little spaces.

  2. I like all the suggested names but “Ducky” is a fun one and “MornShine” seems very descriptive. I don’t envy you having to choose a name!

On another note, my DH saw your garden pics today. His explanation is that “aliens have landed!” Go figure. LOL

  3. looks like a cocktail to me, therefore Mango Colada. Colada because of the cream coloured bits, if there was more yellow it would be a Mango Daiquiri 🙂 Or if you want something more “exotic” take “Zucchini Blüte” which means squash blossom in German (my native tongue) Actually I really love the name “squash” because it sounds like “squishy” to me, which is a great american word. So what about “Squishy Squashy Mango Blossom”? Now it’s getting silly so I will stop here…

  4. I can’t come up with a better name than any of those already suggested—funny how that color makes everyone think of food! Good luck choosing! Those new steps are going to make such a difference, I bet. We recently had to have our driveway redone (tree root issues) and even though it took an entire week, it was so worth it.

  5. ooh that sea dreams is gorgeous. i vote on “butternut” as a name. can’t wait to see the finished shawl.

  6. fiori di zucca sounds so much more evocative! I have a yardful of those things at the moment, though unfortunately, most of them seem to be male pumpkin flowers and far too prickly to eat!

  7. Well again I can provide some German names.. “Kürbisblüte”, for example, which means just “squash blossom”, or “Wilder Kürbis” (Cucurbita foetidissima, it means “wild squash”), but maybe that’s too much umlaut this time. What about “Bienenstich”? Literally it’s the thing you get when a bee pricks you, but we also have a (very sweet) cake with lots of butter, cream, vanilla-pudding and almonds named like that.

  8. It made me think of a Creamsicle, and I see a couple other people already suggested that name. Whatever it ends up being called, it sure is pretty!

  9. It makes me think of saffron or tumeric, which leads to a nice dish of veggie korma. There is just a hint of Post-it note in the yellow though!

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months now and I have a definite urge to go knit lace…

  10. Nasturtium Bliss? It looks like the whiskey barrel full of nasturtiums that are overflowing in my garden!

  11. I like the Italian version of squash blossom too, “Fiori di Zucca.” Squash blossoms show up a lot on Italian menus in the summertime as part of a fritti misti platter and they’re so delicious!

  12. Since all your summer knitting is tied up with your garden, how bout naming the yarn Summer Harvest?

Love all your garden shots. I can garden vicariously through you.

  13. My first thought when I saw that yarn was Butterscotch sundae – it looks like butterscotch sauce dribbled over french vanilla ice cream. If that is not classy enough, it also looks like the ‘Dulce de leche’ caramel/vanilla pudding I’ve been buying my daughter for camp desserts…

  14. OOOHHHH, I LOVE Bee Balm! until I saw Renee’s comment I was thinking totally about Summer Sun or Summer Sunshine, or August Dreams, but Bee Balm says it all for me! It will also go with Kim’s naming scheme because she already has Tupelo Honey for a bee-related color.

  15. I vote for Spun Sunshine or Like Buttah, personally. Also, I don’t know if someone mentioned but the suggestion of Lemoncello coincides with last month’s Super Summer semi-solid Sock Club offering from Yarntini. Since I’m a fairly new knitter, I’m not sure the practice of naming colorways and keeping away from those of other dyers, but I would want to remain unique myself, if it were my colorway. Anyway, good luck!

  16. I am totally obsessed with that kind of yellow at the moment – I can’t get enough of it.

Melissa Citronella – lemon balm in Italian
Fiori di Zucca – squash flowers again in Italian

  17. The latin name for the summer squash plant is cucurbita pepo, so I vote for “Cucurbita!”

  18. Fresh cement, I’m tempted to come over and leave a handprint or footprint, just in case you ever decide to make me mittens or socks!!

  19. I see other people have had a similar idea, but Fleurs de courgette is Zucchini Blossom in French. It sounds so pretty.

  20. Ambrosia… that’s what you mentioned a couple of days ago. I think of honey whenever I hear of ambrosia, so I feel it would go well with the bee theme!

  21. Hmmm, I was reading through some name suggestions, and I have to say I really liked the fiori de zucca, or whatever that was. Very elegant sounding, but still meaning “squash blossom”, lol!

You’re right, they do look exactly like that!

The only corny name I could think of was “Nectar”

  22. The color on my monitor is totally Lemon Meringue Pie, but if you really want to go with the squash theme, how about Crookneck?

  23. Hi! Very cool to have new, ever so shovel-able steps. I have a path in my back yard made of some kind of cement brick squares and it is murder to shovel since it is not so very level. And then there are the uneven spots that fill with water and get so icy…hard to really think about that just now.

As for the color? Mandarin honey – as in mandarin orange, but more honey-like.

Lots of other cool names in the comments already.
